Vietnam: 50 Years Remembered

It only takes a very short time doing ones own research to discover the numerous inaccuracies in this "documentary." Just three examples, the program leaves the impression that the second Golf of Tonkin incident was legitimate. It was not. More draftees were killed than volunteers. A complete myth. That black soldiers were killed in a much greater proportion than their percentage of the U. S. population as a whole. Another myth.

I'm not sure why there is such a dearth of accurate information contained in the "documentary," agenda, failure to do one's on research at just incompetence, but if you are looking for an accurate, objective analysis of US involvement in the Vietnam War, this is not it.

Just came across this on Amazon Prime and as a veteran of Vietnam I thought I would take a look. I barely made it through half of the first episode.

Within the first 30 minutes I counted six bits of false or misleading information. When they claimed JFK was killed in Fort Worth I said enough. (Yes, they went through Truman, Eisenhower and Kennedy in 30 minutes.)

If you are interested in the history of the Vietnam War there are much better options. I would highly recommend Ken Burns 2017 mini series. Also, more recently Vietnam: The War That Changed America which included more interviews of participants.

Don't waste your time on this one, not even thirty minutes.

This is kind of an old fashioned documentary. Trying to be non controversial, yet cheerleading in a stodgy way for the soldiers.

And yet that doesn't stop them from sometimes being deliberately false. The Gulf of Tonkin is falsely shown as a straight forward battle. No mention at all of how much of it was simply made up to justify the war and get the Resolution passed. Protests are often vaguely mentioned. Nothing at all about how mainstream they were, over 7 million, conservatives and religious groups protesting the war too.

Again and again, Presidents Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon press conferences are shown at length. No analysis. Much of this is military history, recitations of battles, body counts. No mention of how often those counts were inflated.

Other falsehoods- Troops were mistreated when they came home. That's been debunked endlessly. The Spitting Image shows how most vets reported being treated well, and many of them took part in antiwar protests. The claims of spitting were made up 20 years later, started by Rambo films.

If you want some accounts of soldiers wo were there, go ahead and watch. Skip past the rest. Otherwise it's not very good.

This should have been a good series but thanks to inaccurate information through each show it's just hard to watch. My guess is that it was written and/or directed by an uneducated Hollywood liberal.

The only good parts of the shows are the interviews with actual veterans. They seem to be the only ones involved in the show that know what the Vietnam War was.

There are so many better series out there, I'd suggest looking to one of those for a more realistic and believable place to get information on Vietnam.

As a Marine Corps veteran, these types of shows just remind me how important talking to actual veterans is to finding truths about our history.

You've recvd at absolute best average reviews of the very few I could find (guess some knew better then to bother watching). I kept watching TRYING to give you benefit o the doubt but ya continued to suck Apart from your basic simplistic description in the beginning as we got into the blood n guts your frequent and in depth description of the bravery of the 'big' guys, those in command and the incredible things they did cuz they actually picked up weapons n faught w their men! HELLO... that's what those men were doing all day every day! What was your point? That these guys actually got off their duffs- probably fat-and did this even though all was expected was for them to go on sitting on their fat ass's? You continuously enhanced these people and the amazing awards they recvd with not one mention of the true heroes, as usual the ones who do the REAL work in jobs, the ones facing the enemy, facing the customers etc... I've done administrative/supervisory work, surprise! It wasn't rocket science. I could go on but not gonna waste more time on you. Thanks for virtually nothin.
