It might be light on archaeology but it is definitely fun

If Mike Rowe is the people's everyman host, Josh Gates is the host you most want to be. Who wouldn't want to travel the world investigating odd and unusual stories and historical mysteries? And not only that, Josh never seems to have a bad day. Perhaps it's just the magic of television but he genuinely seems to have fun with everything no matter what situation he seems to find himself in. He seems to genuinely enjoy his job and it comes through in every episode.

The show thinly veils itself as being about history and archaeology, but it really is about Gates and his adventures and misadventures around the world. Occasionally you will learn something and they will find something archaeologically interesting, but that's really not what the show is about. Being on the Travel channel, it's as much about the travel and experience as it is the science. Perhaps more so.

The show is well worth the watch.

Look...you still learn something!!

I understand some of the lower ratings and their critiques. You get an appetite for answers and actually finding something significant and then....well I guess we'll never really know. Still....the show takes you to places and people that you may otherwise never encounter. It takes the time to provide cultural background and often rich historical information. My 13 yr old daughter loves learning from this show.....and most adults don't know much more than she does about many of the things covered in it. So it certainly isn't a waste of most peoples time. It's much more intellectually minded than most crap on TV today. Ya wanna tune out and watch reruns of Sienfield instead? Josh does well conveying facts while being entertaining. In this show, I think it keeps peoples attention to actually listen to the 'lesson'. Now I cannot say the same for his show 'Destination Truth' which is so very UNlike Expedition Unknown in every way. Don't even try going there. I will always look forward to EU though. To quell above 'the never find anything' complaints....it seems that, in this season at least, they do. We just saw a reconstruction of what 'may' be Cleopatra. An overall fascinating show with many learning opportunities. I much more enjoy Gates in this role than as ghosty guy selling tours of the local haunted house.

GIVE JOSH CREDIT FOR TRYING. STILL FUN TO WATCH.

It's a helluva lot of fun to watch at that. I've been catching EXPEDITION UNKNOWN since the beginning, and, true, while there haven't been any major discoveries (keep in mind it's tough to unearth a hidden treasure in an hour), it remains a worthy travelogue and documentary on just about everything in the world that's been clouded in mystery or controversy. And that's it. Take it or leave it. Josh Gates, with that degree in archaeology, is the host we would all like to be as he travels a bumpy and occasionally dead-end road with a terrific sense of humor and a burning desire to explore the unknown. There are some truly fascinating episodes, well researched at that, giving the viewer a bird's eye view on some incredible case histories, ranging from lost treasures to Nazi hide-outs. If anything, EXPEDITION UNKNOWN remains a campy entertainment of sorts, with a host of unexpected turns and surprises, throw in some good camera work (whether it be underground or underwater) and Josh in pursuit of it all, and sometimes in disguise. Check out his salute, and in full military dress, to General Patton. Or is that George C. Scott? Carry On.

Keeps the magic alive

Do you remember when you were a kid and you saw Goonies or read about pirate treasure and you instantly started digging a hole in your yard? Well that magic is still alive in this show. Josh Gates is a great host and takes us on voyages to other lands and remote locations steeped in history. Sometimes it is chasing treasure and other times it is chasing a legend but it is always entertaining imho and a 'safe' enough show that I let my 6 year old watch it. After the first episode we watched together, she immediately started dragging me off the couch to go look for treasure at the creek behind the house (there is a vine hanging over that part and bamboo that makes it look more jungle like lol). She now has a metal detector that we go hunting with on the weekends and has even buried an arrowhead she found so that "Josh Gates can come here and find it". Very inspiring and hard to find that kind of magical adventure show. Sure, it can be formulaic and sometimes things are not found or the dig is still in progress but the show often updates when things are discovered. Please keep up the good work, Mr. Gates and thank you for creating another generation of adventurer :)

travel programme with a hint of adventure

Have done a blitz on this series and I love it , the travel show showing that there is more than sun and sand , stunning cities and out of the way sceneries. the adventure part mixed in always hinting that you could find the missing treasure etc. josh gates is funny mixing bikes, cars trucks etc into his travel, showing that rent a car is fun and dodgy, he meets some amazing people all thinking they have the answer to the puzzle. mr gates does have a down side , he does push in like a little kid , iam the presenter main man way, well he is American,a bit cocky which makes you hope he breaks a leg , would be nice if he ever found anything but that's the adventure.

Expedition Unknown needs more recognition

I first started watching this show at the start of the pandemic and the episode I first watched was season 6 episode 4, Scotlands Lost Gold!! After that I was immediately hooked, I watched every episode ever and I feel like I learned a lot more about History, Mythology, FBI cases, urban myths, etc than I ever learned in high school!! I love how Josh adds jokes and humor to his shows while still teaching viewers!!!

Pretty good show

The production isn't quite as good as Cities of the Underworld but I still thoroughly enjoy this show. I've seen all the Cities of the Underworld episodes a few times so Expedition Unknown has replaced it on my DVR list as my Sunday morning coffee drinking show. Josh Gates being an actual Archaeologist makes it better for me as well. He really does have the best job in the world. He hasn't completely replaced my man crush on Don Wildman (I still watch Mysteries at the Museum) but it's close. Great show, and if the producers read this I am available to be an assistant (though my wife may not let me travel the historical world and leave her at home...she already nixed me volunteering for VetPaw, an organization for combat vets that fight poachers in Africa). Slight tangent there but yeah definitely a show worth a watch.

Glad Josh is back

So happy Josh and co are back. Love the show. I look forward to his adventures and silly nature. Keep up the great work! Love all the info you uncover.. research that we as viewers would never know. Getting the local folks involved is a great way to learn more about a subject. I"m glad the show is strictly Josh an not a bunch of other tag a longs that have no personality like on destination truth. Josh is likable and makes the show fun to watch while learning about history. So far this season Robin hood was really fun to watch unfold! King Arthur was just as interesting. Genghis Chan.. not so much But I will keep on watching as I really enjoy the show. Travel Channel did itself a favor when adding Josh Gates to the lineup

Entertaining but formulaic.

Gates must be one of the more personable hosts on TV today. The premise is basically the same as his former show Destination Truth on SyFy; insofar as as with Destination Truth the show starts with some spurious rumour and homemade 'newspaper article' relating to some 'lost' artefact or place (as opposed to a mythical creature in DT) followed by Gates heading off around the globe in search of the artefact or place, followed closely by Gate's goofing around while he gets down on the the more serious track of the legends, which he then hunts down in the most annoyingly melodramatic ways possible.

All in all while the content is hokum in the extreme, overly melodramatic in parts, as a travelogue to some pretty interesting places conducted by an intelligent, well travelled, funny and entertaining host.

Presentation Veracity Questionable

At first glance as I watched a couple of episodes I thought this would be a good bit of research journalism. I was mistaken. Although Josh Gates has a degree in Archaeology from Tufts University in Boston, he as has an educational background in drama. These are combined to create a television series to accentuate where he has traveled giving some historical context coupled with some drama. This results in a presentation that lends questionable authenticity to the presentation of each episode. Each episode comes across as an advertisement for the destination he has in them rather than an authentic journalistic research for the historic significance of the destination.

Fun to watch but never finds a thing.

Really fun and frantic with the music and of course commercial break but nothing found. At least nothing of substance. Finding buttons, coins or local so called experts but nothing ever found. You watch because it's fun and you really believe that somehow he will be the one that finds the treasure, the ghost, the monster or whatever it is. However, no tango nada.

Keeping an open mind and an ultimate must watch series.

Whenever I see Josh Gates I find out what the great guy is up to. Now Expedition unknown is really solid on the academic approach and source materials which is a huge plus. Josh isn't someone who will dismiss things out of hand because " it is folklore" or whatever. But then I would expect nothing less from someone who went to a reputable university.

About the show itself: there are some weird ones in it but he tries to remain neutral and only giving his educated opinion at the end of the show. Now he does seem to be over enthusiastic at times which can lead to hilarious situations ( like him falling, jumping off stuff(nearly plunging to his death) etc) So it is quite fun to see what he does next.

He also keep things up to date with the scientific methods and practices so it is a true show you have to watch.

I Like His Older Shows Better

I've always liked Josh and Expedition Unknown, but his older shows, with him in them, are the best. He does get some funny 'comic relief screamers' (women who jump at a rustling lead) that I know must be hired for funny reasons, not serious researchers. But, Josh is the BEST!

One Caveat......... This program would be ten times more enjoyable, entertaining and educational if they didn't have to take a commercial break every 3rd minute of the show. I'm not kidding. It's annoying and just a pain to have to deal with. I understand sponsors and advertising bucks pay for the programming but for goodness sake not every 3rd minute!!!

This show has MORE commercial breaks than ANY other program on cable TV today! That needs to change. I like Josh and the team, but the format desperately needs renovation asap.

I really enjoy this show!

I do love this show. I get to learn new things about countries and legends you don't normally get in a dry documentary. every time I think I can say " this is my favorite episode!" I watch another and change my mind. It was the metal library then the mammoth bones but now I think it might be the Yeti! Josh really does make the show. I think he reacts to things the way most of us would. Lol. I watched truth, not so much for the paranormal things but the first part during the travel. I was so happy to see he's doing more of an expedition show now. It's nice to see how to travel in other countries as I will never get to do that myself. I hope this show's around for many more adventures.

Probably about 80% fairly legit.

This show is pretty much the real deal although it does tweak timelines, pretends old discoveries are being revealed for the first time, and probably more little line-blurrings for dramatic effect. It has just enough real history and discoveries to make it legit in my eyes. For example, I was watching What on Earth and I think some show with Secrets in the title on the Smithsonian channel. One was about Hitler's supposed Argentinian hideaway called Inalco house, and the other was on the Ark of the Covenant in Ethiopia. Both hosts tried to gain access-to get permission to visit the island in one case and talk to the Monk guarding the supposed Ark in the other and couldn't even get close. They were turned away. Talk about Lame! These are two cases where Josh was granted full access. Josh even found a Nazi Coin at Inalco house.

And you can't beat Josh for charisma and humor. It's a very entertaining and educational show as long as you take it with a grain of salt and follow with your own independent research later.

What the hell...

With Josh "in the field" the show is close to a ten for overall entertainment. With this Phil and Jess, it's unwatchable!

I know Josh got messed up by the bat 💩 but I've never seen estimates on when he'll return and the 🔟 - Expedition Unknown w/Josh Gates will return. PLEASE someone - Josh, Discovery, a Superfan, ANYONE tell me when one of my favorite show on the Discovery + network will be back to normal, IF EVER!!!!!

Help!!!!!

Interesting but annoying too

Like the idea of this show. Camerawork is great and I like Josh as a host. You don't see the mysteries solved, but there are enough facts included to pique interest .....I always end up looking for more information about the story afterwards. Having said all that... This program suffers from the same obnoxious and idiotic "enhancements" that so many others do these days.. Too many commercials Constant popup promos for other shows - can I just watch this one please ? ! Annoying tweets that take up half the screen. Makes it impossible to SEE the great video and experience the location. In short . ...promising idea that just ends up annoying me because I CAN'T SEE IT BEHIND THE JUNK. I'm not wasting my time anymore .

Anything ever found?

I've watched some episodes of this show, and it seems that like all the other shows with the same premise, whatever it is the host is looking for never, ever gets found. Yeah, there's great scenery, and lots of interesting information, but it becomes very irritating, show after show, when there is never any payoff. "Reality" TV is such BS anyway; I'd rather they just present it as a documentary.
