'Fantastic Four' Star's Netflix Follow-Up Is One of the Oscar-Nominee's Lowest Rated Movies Ever
Image
It's not the best night for Vanessa Kirby (The Fantastic Four: First Steps). This may refer to the story of her new movie, Night Always Comes, but also indicates the fact that the movie has just joined a list that most actors prefer to look away from: the one with poorly reviewed movies. The Netflix thriller debuted with a lackluster 59% score on Rotten Tomatoes, which suggests that critics weren't quite taken with the story. The score might change if more reviews come in over the weekend, but for now the movie ranks among the lowest-rated projects that Kirby starred in.

It's sad, because the synopsis and trailer for Night Always Comes make it seem like a compelling story. Set over the course of one night, the movie centers around the desperate attempt of Lynette (Kirby) to come up with an obscene amount of money in 12 hours or less — all of...

The Only Anthony Hopkins Movie That Has A Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
At a time when Hollywood's long-term survival is in question and directors like Joe Russo are welcoming the arrival of an AI-driven garbage future with open arms, it might seem as though Rotten Tomatoes rankings are the least of our concerns. Quite honestly, they are. Whether a film receives the coveted "Fresh" rating or the dreaded splat really isn't all that consequential in the grand scheme of things. But for whatever reason, the Tomatometer still holds sway over our collective movie tastes, and now that movies' Rt scores are baked into many of our favorite streaming services' interfaces, it's harder than ever to avoid the all-powerful review aggregator.

It's fair to say, then, that Rotten Tomatoes is doing alright for itself, which in turn means it's probably okay to point out some of its shortcomings. As such, let me point your attention towards Rotten Tomatoes' contention that there are only...

Jeffrey Wright Jokes He Will Never Again Mock Critics While Honored at African American Film Critics Awards
Image
On Wednesday night, the African American Film Critics Association honored the top actors, directors and films of the year at the 15th annual Aafca Awards, in a Los Angeles ceremony hosted by Roy Wood Jr.

One of night’s top honors — which were announced in advance — went to American Fiction star Jeffrey Wright, who delivered a humorous speech about the debt actors owe to critics as he accepted the Legend Award.

“There is a line in The Dresser which, to my mind, is the film that best captures what it is to be an actor,” he began. “Albert Finney, playing this blustery, brilliant, Shakespearean actress, says these horrible words: ‘The critics. Hate the critics. I have nothing but compassion for them. How can one hate the crippled, the mentally deficient, and the dead?'”

“I’ve been changed,” Wright said to a response of thunderous laughter. “After this moment I...

Yates died Nov. 17 in Los Angeles after a stroke, his family announced.

Barbra Streisand on her passion to make ‘Yentl’: ‘I had a vision of it’
Image
When Barbra Streisand’s “Yentl” opened on Nov. 18, 1983, directing was very much a man’s world. In the 1970s, there had been a few inroads for women. Italian director Lina Wertmuller was nominated for best director for 1976’s “Seven Beauties” Stateside, actress Barbara Loden, who was married to Oscar-winning director Elia Kazan, wrote, directed and starred in the acclaimed 1970 indie drama “Wanda,” which won best foreign film at the Venice Film Festival. She never followed up with another movie and died of breast cancer in 1980.

There was also Joan Micklin Silver (“Hester Street”), Claudia Weill (“Girlfriends”), Martha Coolidge (“Not a Pretty Picture”), Joan Tewkesbury (“Old Boyfriends”) and Joan Darling (“First Love”). But those filmmakers ran into brick walls when they tried to set up projects with the major studios. The late Silver told Vanity Fair in 2021 that a studio executive didn’t mince his word: “Feature films are expensive to make and expensive to market,...

‘The Big Chill’ 40th anniversary: Remembering Lawrence Kasdan’s 3-time Oscar nominee
Image
One of the most beloved movies of 1983 is “The Big Chill,” starring Kevin Kline, Glenn Close, William Hurt and Meg Tilly. Written by Lawrence Kasdan and Barbara Benedek and directed by Kasdan, the film is an ensemble comedy-drama about a group of former college friends who reunite for a weekend after one of their college friends dies. Released 40 years ago on September 28, 1983, “The Big Chill” did well at the box office, making $56 million worldwide on a budget of just $8 million. The movie marked another financial triumph for director Kasdan, whose feature debut two years earlier, “Body Heat,” did well at the box office and with critics. Read on as Gold Derby celebrates “The Big Chill” 40th anniversary.

Critics for the most part gave positive notices to “The Big Chill,” including Richard Corliss in Time Magazine, who called it “funny and ferociously smart.” Vincent Canby in The New York Times said,...

‘Red, White and Royal Blue’ could bring TV movie representation back to Golden Globes
Image
Upon its August 2023 premiere, the Amazon Prime Video original film “Red, White & Royal Blue” quickly gained a massive audience, a large portion of which reportedly created new subscriptions just so they could view it. Now, the two-hour adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s 2019 novel of the same name is set to embark on a 2024 TV awards run that, of course, won’t include the delayed 75th Emmys but could more than reasonably begin with the 81st Golden Globes. If it does make its way into the upcoming Best Limited Series/TV Movie lineup, it will be the first one-off film in seven years to earn Golden Globes recognition as a general program.

Directed and co-written by Tony winner Matthew López (“The Inheritance”), “Red, White & Royal Blue” stars Taylor Zakhar Perez (“The Kissing Booth” franchise) and Nicholas Galitzine (2021’s “Cinderella”) as two fictional world leaders’ offspring whose bitter rivalry unexpectedly evolves into a romance.

Let’s celebrate the ‘Flashdance’ 40th anniversary: What a feeling!
Image
One of the most high-profile releases in the spring of 1983 was “Flashdance,” starring Jennifer Beals, directed by Adrian Lyne, and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson. It marked Beals’ feature film debut, as well as Lyne’s second major feature following 1980’s “Foxes.” It was also one of Bruckheimer’s and Simpson’s earliest projects, coming soon after “American Gigolo.” Released 40 years ago on April 15, 1983, “Flashdance” took second place at the box office its opening weekend with four million dollars, but then it became the sensation of the spring movies, jumping up to first place the next weekend and staying there well into early May. By the end of its run, “Flashdance,” about a woman who works as both a welder and an exotic dancer and wants to get into ballet school, made more than $90 million in the United States and more than $200 million worldwide. The entertainment community suffered an enormous loss in February with the death of the great actor Albert Finney, who would have been 83 on May 9, 2019. Finney, whose legacy included triumphs on stage and television, was primarily known worldwide for his career, which lasted over half a century, as a film actor, equally adept in light-hearted musicals and complex dramas.

Finney’s work has been heralded in all three media. He won London’s Olivier Award for “Orphans” on stage, and won an Emmy, Golden Globe and BAFTA Award for his performance as Winston Churchill in TV’s “The Gathering Storm.” But it was in film that Finney was most honored. In 2000, Finney scored a rare double at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, winning Best Supporting Actor for his work in Steven Soderbergh‘s “Erin Brockovich,” and even though...

Review: "Robbery" (1967) Starring Stanley Baker; Kino Lorber Blu-ray Special Edition
“A Great Train Robbery”

By Raymond Benson

In 1963, bandits robbed a Royal Mail train in England and got away with over two million pounds. Most of the gang was eventually caught and incarcerated, but the heist had been meticulously planned and cleverly executed. Hence, it was known as the “Great Train Robbery.”

In 1967, Peter Yates made a movie loosely based on the robbery itself, but everything else in the picture was fictionalized, including the characters involved. Robbery, Yates’ third feature film, is a tight, gritty, and realistic heist picture that is sure to please fans of Yates’ next title, Bullitt (with Steve McQueen). In fact, apparently McQueen wanted Yates to direct Bullitt because of the exciting car chase in the first fifteen minutes of Robbery. One can see the similarities between this one and the iconic sequence in Bullitt, although the earlier one takes place in London, and McQueen’s in San Francisco.

HBO Miniseries ‘Chernobyl’ Is As “Close To Reality” As Possible Within Five Hours – TCA
HBO’s miniseries Chernobyl, about the 1986 nuclear accident in the Soviet Union, is as “close to reality” as possible within a five-hour structure.

The Huntsman: Winter’s War’s Craig Mazin, who wrote and exec produced the drama, said, “We want to be as accurate as we can be. We never changed anything to make it more dramatic or to hype it up. The last thing we wanted to do is fall in to the same trap that liars fall into,” he said, speaking Friday at TCA.

Chernobyl, the first production under HBO and Sky’s fledgling drama partnership, stars The Crown‘s Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgård (Avengers: Age of Ultron) and Emily Watson (The Dresser).

It dramatizes the true story of one of the worst man-made catastrophes in history and tells of the brave men and women who sacrificed to save Europe from unimaginable disaster. The miniseries focuses on...

Remembering Five-Time Oscar Nominee Albert Finney, Who Played Iconic Roles With a Wink
Albert Finney at an event for Erin Brockovich - Forte come la verità (2000)
Albert Finney was not yet 50 when he earned his third Oscar nomination playing a volatile ball of ego and insecurity in Ronald Harwood’s brilliant backstage drama “The Dresser.” At one point, the character — a high-maintenance Shakespearean stage actor slowly collapsing in upon himself like some kind of dying sun — bellows, “I can’t do it anymore! I have nothing more to give!”

That was 35 years ago. His character Sir may have been primed to expire after more than 200 performances as King Lear In “The Dresser,” but Finney, who died Thursday, still had at least half of his career — and two more Oscar nominations — ahead of him: as the epically self-destructive drunk in John Huston’s “Under the Volcano,” and the surly boss-turned-champion in “Erin Brockovich.”

Younger audiences probably know the 82-year-old British actor best as the baritone-voiced mastermind behind the shadowy CIA operations in the first two Jason Bourne sequels,...

Albert Finney’s 15 Most Memorable Roles, From ‘Tom Jones’ to ‘Miller’s Crossing’ (Photos)
Albert Finney at an event for Erin Brockovich - Forte come la verità (2000)
This week, the world lost a legendary actor in Albert Finney. He might’ve already been an icon as the handsome, rugged face of the British New Wave of cinema, but he soon transformed into an actor who loved disappearing into roles, whether behind pounds of makeup or thick accents. And in doing so he found himself in everything from Oscar favorites to star-studded blockbusters to auteur-driven indies. Here we’ve compiled 15 of his greatest roles, and that might not even begin to scratch the surface.

“Saturday Night, Sunday Morning” (1960)

Finney’s breakout role in “Saturday Night, Sunday Morning” branded him as the first “Angry Young Man,” an archetype that would grow out of the rebellious ’60s and Britain’s rising lower class. From the film’s opening minutes, Finney looks like a British James Dean, and you can immediately sense his disdain at any sort of authority figure, giving...

5-time Oscar nominee Albert Finney, a larger-than-life actor yet down-to-earth star who put his work first
Albert Finney at an event for Erin Brockovich - Forte come la verità (2000)
“To be a character who feels a deep emotion, one must go into the memory’s vault and mix in a sad memory from one’s own life” – Albert Finney, 1936-2019.

Finney was part of a post-war wave of English performers, including Tom Courtenay, Richard Burton, Peter O’Toole, Alan Bates and Oliver Reed, who made a quite a splash on the big screen in the early ‘60s. The much-admired actor, who was nominated for five Oscars spanning four different decades yet never won one, died at age 82 on Thursday.

Finney first earned awards attention as a hard-drinking, philandering and disgruntled member of the working class in the 1960 British release “Saturday Night and Sunday Morning,” which was emblematic of a genre called the “kitchen sink drama.” But it was his charming rogue who proved irresistible to women in 1963’s “Tom Jones,” a bawdy, boisterous picaresque that blew the dust off of period pieces,...

Actor Albert Finney Has Passed Away at Age 82
Today we lost an acting legend of the screen and stage, Albert Finney. Finney was born in Salford, England, and graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, and was also a member of the Royal Shakespeare Academy in Stratford-Upon-Avon, England. He was nominated for Best Actor in the Academy Awards five times, although he never took the award home. His nominations were for Tom Jones (1963), Murder on the Orient Express (1974), The Dresser (1983), Under the Volcano (1984), and Erin Brockovich (2000).

Finney also starred in fan-favorites like the musicals Scrooge (1970) and Annie (1982), and one of my favorite films, Big Fish (2003), for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor. Finney’s final roles were in 2012’s Bond film, Skyfall, and The Bourne Legacy. This was just one year after he reportedly beat a cancer diagnosis.

In reading about his life, I saw that he was nominated for knighthood twice,...

Albert Finney, five-time Oscar-nominee and star of Tom Jones, has passed away. He was 82. According to his family, Finney "passed away peacefully after a short illness with those closest to him by his side." Finney died at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London of a chest infection. He had been diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2011.

Born in 1936, Albert Finney grew up in a lower-middle-class family and was the son of a bookmaker. Finney was eventually accepted to train at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where he cut his teeth acting on the stage. Not long after, Finney transitioned into movies, with his first major role coming Tony Richardson's 1960 classic The Entertainer. Finney, that same year, also starred in Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, directed by Karel Reisz, which proved to be his major breakout role. Albert Finney, Legendary Actor of Skyfall, Miller’s Crossing, Passes Away at 82
Joseph Baxter Feb 8, 2019

Five-time Oscar-nominated English acting legend, Albert Finney, has died, leaving behind a prestigious legacy.

Albert Finney, the celebrated British thespian known from films like Skyfall, Big Fish, Murder on the Orient Express and Tom Jones, just to name a few, has died at the age of 82.

The legendary actor succumbed to a chest infection on Thursday at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London. As his family tells AP in a statement, Albert “passed away peacefully after a short illness with those closest to him by his side.”

Finney spearheaded the British performance movement known as “kitchen sink realism,” focusing on angsty, disillusioned characters. Having started in stage and television, he would burst onto the cinematic scene in 1960 in The Entertainer. However, his lead role as the title character in 1963’s Tom Jones – a picaresque adventure-comedy based on Henry Fielding’s 1749 novel – cemented his place in the annals,...

Refresh for updates Albert Finney, who died yesterday, is being remembered by co-stars and colleagues from Hollywood to London today as an actor who all but defined versatility. From the intimate kitchen-sink dramas that started his career to the big, broad musicals like Scrooge (pictured) and Annie that became family fare traditions, Finney was, as Rufus Sewell, his A Man of No Importance co-star, “effortlessly great.”

Sam Mendes, director of Finney in Skyfall, said, “It is desperately sad news that Albert Finney has gone. He really was one of the greats – a brilliant, beautiful, big-hearted, life loving delight of a man. He will be terribly missed.”

“I was lucky enough to have worked with the late great Albert Finney in the film Erin Brockovich,” tweeted Marg Helgenberger. “An extraordinary & generous actor who oozed charm & mischievousness. Do yourself a favor & watch one of his performances this weekend…”
