Subhash K Jha looks back at Mahesh Manjrekar’s Rakht, which starred Bipasha Basu, Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty, Dino Morea, Amrita Arora and Neha Dhupia, as it clocks 21 years since it hit the big screen.
Not often do we get a mainstream Hindi film that allows some of our biggest stars to defiantly depart from their images. Rakht gives macho actors like Sanjay Dutt and Dino Morea a chance to broaden their histrionic horizons in unexpected and startling ways.
Most of all, the plot is handed over to the leading lady. Playing a widowed clairvoyant with a growing son, Bipasha Basu gets into character like never before.

In a new post, Sarah Michelle Gellar has shared a slew of Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot images. After initially concluding in 2003, Buffy the Vampire Slayer will return in a new series. A pilot was ordered by Hulu, which has completed filming. At the time of writing, the revival has not received a full series order to continue production.
On Gellar's Instagram, she shared 11 behind-the-scenes images from filming the pilot episode. Gellar can only show "very little" of the secretive project, but does provide some interesting looks. Good things come to those who wait. Just ask J.K. Simmons, who finally scored his first Emmy nomination 40 years after his very first TV role as a bit player in the 1986 TV movie Popeye Doyle, starring Ed O'Neill as the New York cop made famous by Gene Hackman; 30 years after his breakout part as one of the jailbirds housed in the titular penitentiary of HBO's landmark prison drama Oz; and 10 years after winning an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor as a tough-as-nails drum instructor in Damien Chazelle's Whiplash.
And the series that broke that decades-long waiting game? Season 3 of Die Hart — the Quibi-turned-Roku Hollywood satire fronted by Kevin Hart.

It seems like even after 15 years of its release, Jason Bateman’s comedy film Extract is in heavy demand on Paramount+ (via FlixPatrol). Towards the end, we witness how, despite all the turmoil that the characters go through, Joel manages to make the right decision for his family and his marriage.
Thus, to understand how optimism played a large role in the climax and also became the key to the ending of the film, we need to understand the ending of Joel’s decision to come clean and open up to his wife about his problems.

Star Trek: Voyager’s season 4 episode The Gift established Jeri Ryan’s Seven of Nine as a main cast member, beginning a new era for the franchise and an ugly behind-the-scenes feud involving Kate Mulgrew and Ryan. The series lead reportedly treated her new co-star very badly, and stories of her making Ryan’s experience on set terrible have been public.
The episode, which was released in 1997, saw Ryan’s Seven of Nine being surgically disconnected from the Borg while the ship deals with the damage it sustained after the previous episode’s battle. Seven of Nine was introduced to attract a certain demographic of viewers to the show.

The most powerful beings in all of Star Trek are as follows: Q, Trelene, The Prophets, Charlie Evans, V'Ger, Kes. Wait… Kes!?
Yes, Kes. The soft-spoken, Neelix-loving, Doctor assisting Ocampa was equipped to be one of the most powerful beings in the Star Trek universe. Or… sort of. Kes’s storyline ended somewhat abruptly, leaving much room for character exploration.

This means, at the age of two, Kes not only had full control over her telepathic powers but also taught herself advanced medical knowledge and displayed strong emotional intelligence. At that same age, most humans can only count to five.

Before Jenna Ortega‘s Wednesday began exploring death, Sarah Michelle Gellar‘s Buffy Summers had already set the standard for supernatural transformation. Wednesday Season 2 creeps closer to its August 6 premiere on Netflix.
The gothic teen mystery, starring Ortega as the daughter of the Addams Family, became a breakout hit after its 2022 debut. Now with darker storylines, the show is heading towards a transformation similar to another iconic supernatural character, Buffy.
In Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Buffy dies in season 1 to confront the Master and unlock her full Slayer potential. The death is part of the prophecy. She was revived by Xander’s CPR. Upon revival, Buffy became stronger and could defeat the Master. In the season 5 finale, The Gift, she leapt into a portal to save Dawn. When she was resurrected in season 6, she returned changed. More powerful, but the experience affected her psychologically.

As a cinephile, one of my favorite things to do is rediscover underseen and forgotten gems directed or written by big-time Hollywood actors. It's akin to finding gold in places you walked by a thousand times before but never bothered to look at them closely. That's how I discovered Robert Redford's fascinating historical masterpiece "Quiz Show" a few years ago, and the same way I found Richard Pearce's heartfelt 1996 family drama, "A Family Thing," written by Billy Bob Thornton and Tom Epperson. Thornton and Epperson actually collaborated on several screenplays — including the cult classic crime flick "One False Move" and Sam Raimi's mystery horror "The Gift" — throughout their careers. "A Family Thing" came just before the former's celebrated directorial debut, "Sling Blade," which he wrote and won an Oscar for in 1997.
I bring up "Sling Blade" because the film shares some important roots with "A Family Thing.

Kevin Costner will always be known for playing John Dutton in Yellowstone, but nearly 20 years before he ever suited up in Taylor Sheridan’s hit Western series, he starred in a sports drama that just got a disappointing streaming update. Costner stars alongside John C. Reilly (Step Brothers) and Brian Cox (Succession) in For Love of the Game, the 1999 baseball movie following Detroit Tigers pitcher Billy Chapel (Costner), who has to decide how much he’s willing to risk for the sport he loves. For Love of the Game is currently streaming on Netflix, but the streamer has announced that the last day to watch the film will be on July 31. It earned scores of 47% from critics and 75% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it grossed only $46 million at the box office against an $80 million budget, making it a major flop.

After recently earning acclaim for his wondrously transportive Il Buco (aka The Hole), one has the opportunity to see an early, newly restored feature from Italian director Michelangelo Frammartino. Billy Bob Thornton may be Hollywood’s resident Southern grit-meets-genius, but his net worth is anything but humble. With a career that spans decades, genres, and a surprising number of cowboy hats, Thornton has done it all, Oscar-winning writer-director? Check. Gritty oilman in Landman? Check. The guy who somehow made Santa into a criminal icon in Bad Santa? Also check.
As Landman wraps up its record-breaking debut season, fans are once again tuning in to Thornton’s unmistakable swagger and slow-burn brilliance. But behind all that dusty charisma is a bank account as rich as a Texas oil field.
From his per-movie paycheck to his side hustles in music, screenwriting, and smart business plays, Thornton’s fortune is a mix of Hollywood hustle and backwoods charm. Whether he’s starring in a Sheridan drama or strumming heartbreak songs on tour, one thing’s clear: Thornton doesn’t just collect accolades; he stacks cash too.

“I’m just finishing a score for Gus Van Sant and a really fun thriller,” the composer told journalist Andrew Freund. “And then I start another thriller with Sam Raimi that they just finished shooting in Australia called Send Help.”
The two icons of cinema previously collaborated on Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Oz the Great and Powerful, A Simple Plan, Darkman, and the Army of Darkness theme. Elfman also cameoed in Raimi’s The Gift.
Send Help lands in theaters on January 30, 2026 from 20th Century Studios.

One group of musicians that frequently sparks polarizing opinions is female rappers. Unfortunately, they often face intense scrutiny for their image and content, including their fashion choices, actions, and lyrical themes.
If a woman raps about sex in detail, the angry mobs run for their pitchforks and torches; however, if a male rapper releases a song just as explicit, no one bats an eye.

“I have two almost 4-year-olds, and I’m quite powerful and influential in certain circles, but not with two 4-year-olds,” says Joel Edgerton. “Kids run their own country, in a way.”
Edgerton’s been thinking a lot lately about those nascent years before entering adulthood thanks to his latest project, The Plague, which looks at the complicated and occasionally terrifying social dynamics of kids — specifically adolescent boys.
The feature debut of director Charlie Polinger, the film is set in the world of a competitive water polo summer camp, focusing primarily on the dynamic within a group of 12- and 13-year-old boys who have ostracized one camper because he has “the plague,” a nasty-looking case of eczema. One camper, Ben (Everett Blunck), struggles between his desire to help the outcast camper and his worry about incurring the wrath of the larger group. In the film, Edgerton plays the well-meaning if ineffective water polo coach.

Joel Edgerton can be seen in the upcoming Train Dreams, which screened at Sundance a few months ago, and Netflix shelled out a massive $16 million for the rights to this elegant slice of early twentieth-century Americana, which could be an awards contender if given the proper build-up. Our Chris Bumbray raved about the film, saying in his review, “It’s the kind of movie that stays with you long after you see it and hopefully will get the kind of build-up it deserves, as it will likely rank among the best films of the year when all is said and done.”
Next, Edgerton has signed on to star in a black comedy with Toni Collette titled Fangs. According to Variety, the film is described as a “thrilling black comedy about privilege, power, and dangerous fantasies.” The film will be helmed by first-time Australian director Lucy McKendrick. Fargo wrapped up with its final season last year, and the show has seen many movie and TV veterans come and go through its five-season run. One of the stars from the first and second seasons of Fargo was Allison Tolman, famed for her role as Molly Solverson. Unlike many other TV shows, Fargo brings in a mostly new cast each season to tell a new story, with names like Billy Bob Thornton, Jon Hamm, and Jason Schwartzman all coming and going over the years. Tolman never came back after Season 2, but we now know this wasn’t due to a lack of interest. During a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Tolman was asked about her time on Fargo, and she spoke about it fondly but also recalled how difficult it was to stand on the sidelines after departing the show:

Rick Buckler, founding drummer for popular and influential British rock trio The Jam, died February 17 after a short illness, his management company said in a statement. He was 69.
“Rick Buckler, best known as the legendary drummer of The Jam, passed away peacefully on Monday evening in Woking, after a short illness with family by his side,” the statement reads. “Rick was a loving husband, father and grandfather and was a devoted friend to many, who will be greatly missed.”
Buckler joined up with frontman singer-guitarist Paul Weller and bassist Bruce Foxton to form The Jam in 1972 and remained with the group until its 1982 breakup. Recording from 1977-82, it was among the era’s most popular bands in the UK, where The Jam racked up 18 consecutive Top 40 singles, nine Top 10s and four No. 1s: 1980’s “Going Underground” and “Start,” followed by “Town Called Malice” — which debuted atop the chart — and...

Few television shows have stood the test of time like The Twilight Zone. Created by the legendary Rod Serling, the anthology series was more than just eerie sci-fi and horror -- it was a masterclass in social commentary. Serling, a decorated World War II veteran and staunch advocate for civil rights and racial justice, used the show as a vehicle to discuss real-world injustices in a way that network executives would accept. When he attempted to write a script about the murder of Emmett Till, he faced censorship at every turn. Realizing that his message would only reach audiences if it was cloaked in allegory, he turned to science fiction and fantasy.
The result was The Twilight Zone, a show that challenged viewers to think critically about society, often sneaking hard-hitting truths past censors. Over its five-season run, the series tackled racism, authoritarianism, conformity, and the horrors of war -- sometimes subtly,...

As far as horror directors go, they don’t get much more influential than Sam Raimi. If he’d only made The Evil Dead trilogy, his place in the pantheon would be guaranteed, but he also made two kick-ass thrillers, A Simple Plan and The Gift, and – oh yeah – the original Spider-Man trilogy starring Tobey Maguire. After a brief return to superhero movie directing with Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness (which made just under a billion dollars worldwide), Raimi is set for a return to horror with Send Help, which now has a January 30th, 2026 release date.
His first legit horror flick since 2009’s underrated Drag Me to Hell, Raimi’s Doctor Strange co-star Rachel McAdams takes the lead in what’s being called a survival thriller/horror film. Initial reports called it “Misery meets Cast Away,” with it said to be a two-hander. Film scooper Daniel Richtman...

It's hard to believe that director Sam Raimi, someone who has become synonymous with the horror genre, has only made one real horror movie in the last three decades. It's a testament to the enduring influence and brilliance of his Evil Dead movies (not to mention the underrated superhero horror movie Darkman). Now, the filmmaker is returning to horror with Send Help, which now has a release date. The film will play in theaters on January 30, 2026, and is set to be released by 20th Century Studios.

The great state of Georgia has been home to an impressive number of film productions, including a number of Marvel Studios movies, but only a very small percentage of those are actually set in Georgia. Instead, the Atlanta streets frequently play the role of New York or Washington D.C., and its wild spaces can be used to represent just about anywhere.
But what about those movies that actually take place in the beautiful, complicated Peach State? Films as diverse and wonderful as "Magic Mike Xxl" and "Days of Thunder" all have great stretches set in Georgia, but some films go even further and really represent a little slice of the state with most of their runtime. Whether it's Clint Eastwood's genteel Savannah true crime murder mystery "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil," having an aca-awesome time with college acapella performers in Atlanta in "Pitch Perfect," or...

In a 1992 comedy flick, a carefree cheerleader learns about her destiny to hunt down and kill vampires. Although this teenage girl is initially flippant about her burgeoning abilities, a series of events forces her to take vampire-hunting seriously. Amid a botched prom and an antagonistic showdown in the school basement, the girl and her allies emerge victorious, having put an end to the tyranny of vampires hounding Hemery High School. Mostly unserious and wholly slapstick, this Fran Rubel Kuzui-helmed film received a negative to lukewarm reception on release. This comedy was none other than "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."
But this isn't the version of Buffy that entered the global pop culture DNA. After all, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," the television series we know and love, is remembered through its enduring imagery: Black leather jackets, occult/religious iconography, passionate romance, and gothic architecture, to name just a few. The Nocturnal Animals ending is one of the movie's most talked-about aspects. The 2016 thriller ends on an emotionally gut-wrenching yet ambiguous note. Nocturnal Animals stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a writer named Edward, who sends his latest novel manuscript to his ex-wife Susan (Amy Adams). As Susan immerses herself in the nail-biting tale of violence and death, she revisits the ups and downs of her own failed marriage with Edward. The novel's premise serves as a parallel storyline in Nocturnal Animals, capturing its protagonist, Tony's pain as he tries to get over his wife and daughter's assault and murder.
Jake Gyllenhaal plays Edward and Tony, the dual role allowing him to capture the emotional nuances of both characters. While Edward struggles with his professional insecurities and romantic missteps, Tony seeks nothing but blood-stained revenge for the drifters who destroyed his family. Interestingly, the neo-noir psychological thriller is based on Austin Wright's 1993 novel,...

Which one was Keanu Reeves’ most surprising performance? (Photo Credit – Facebook)
Forget Neo or John Wick—this was Reeves at his most ruthless. The Gift was a supernatural thriller led by Cate Blanchett (Annie Wilson). The cast was stacked—Katie Holmes, Hilary Swank, and Giovanni Ribisi all delivered.
As Donnie, Keanu Reeves played an abusive husband who terrorized Swank’s Valerie and anyone in his way. His intensity made every scene nerve-wracking. When Annie encouraged Valerie to leave, Donnie’s wrath turned chilling, transforming Reeves into the ultimate villain you love to hate.
One standout moment? Donnie storming Annie’s home after catching wind of her advice to Valerie. The scene escalated fast. Donnie yelled, threatened, and threw furniture, eventually dragging his wife out by her hair. Jason Bateman plays the villain in Netflix’s Carry-On, and though it might be a surprising role for some, it won’t be for those familiar with the nine-year-old horror movie he starred in. From 1997-2003, Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) was indisputably the most prominent monster hunter on television. Two years after Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended, the horror procedural Supernatural blasted onto screens, introducing the world to iconic monster-hunting duo Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester. Sadly, the programs just missed each other, so an epic crossover was out of the question. But if their leads ever did cross paths, Buffy and Dean may be shocked by how much they have in common.
Buffy is a sassy former cheerleader whose life changes when she learns she is the Slayer, the chosen one in her generation gifted with the powers and skills to fight vampires and demons. Dean is a roguish outcast, raised to hunt monsters since childhood after a demon murdered his mother. On the surface, they exemplify very different archetypes, but their journeys force them to deal with surprisingly similar obstacles.

Sharon Stone, the Hollywood legend that starred in films like Basic Instinct and Casino, has called out Sam Raimi, her director in 1995’s The Quick and the Dead, for being disloyal to her after she reportedly gave so much to him: “He didn’t thank me, he didn’t hire me again, he didn’t acknowledge the relationship.”
Stone appeared at the Torino Film Festival, where she spoke about Raimi, and what followed after they worked together in The Quick and the Dead. Also a producer on the film, Stone was involved in making some very important decisions, as she recounted:

The Venom trilogy has a self-awareness which marks it out from its Sony stablemates, thanks to the pairing of Tom Hardy and screenwriter/director Kelly Marcel.
As far as cinematic universes go, the one once inexplicably known as ‘Spumc’ (the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters) hasn’t exactly gone down easy.

With her haunting performance in the 2000 Southern Gothic horror, The Gift, Cate Blanchett once again proves she can tackle any role. Written by Billy Bob Thornton and Tom Epperson, this Georgia-set thriller is a slow burn that digs deep into the heart of the human condition. It features one fierce Blanchett, portraying a mother willing to do whatever it takes to protect her family as well as the dead who can no longer speak for themselves. The Gift was a moderate box office success, raking in 40 million dollars against its 10 million dollar budget, while receiving generally positive reviews to top it off.

Vertical has picked up the North American and UK/Ireland distribution rights to the comedic thriller I Don’t Understand You, which stars Nick Kroll (Don’t Worry Darling), Andrew Rannells (A Simple Favor), Morgan Spector (The Gilded Age) and Amanda Seyfried (the Mamma Mia! franchise), and Deadline reports that the company is planning to give the film a theatrical release sometime in early 2025.
Actor David Joseph Craig wrote the screenplay with Brian Crano, and the duo directed the film together. While this marks Craig’s feature directorial debut, Crano has previously directed the 2017 Rebecca Hall / Dan Stevens comedy Permission and the 2011 Jason Ritter / Rebecca Hall comedy A Bag of Hammers. Somehow, Rebecca Hall appears to have missed out on I Don’t Understand You, but her husband, Morgan Spector, is in there.
