NASA plans a new moon mission after more than 50 years. The last people on the Moon were the astronauts of the Apollo 17 mission. The final footprint was left by
Eugene Cernan, who re-entered the lunar module on December 14, 1972. No human has set foot on the Moon since then. NASA is planning, with the Artemis II mission, to send four astronauts on a roughly ten-day journey around the Moon and back - the launch is currently scheduled for no earlier than February 5, 2026. The first crewed Moon-landing attempt since 1972, Artemis III, is currently targeted for mid-2027.
