On January 1, 2024, Disney’s 1928 animated short film, Steamboat Willie, became public domain, and the next day, it was announced that Steven Lamorte was working on a dark and twisted version of the iconic mouse. Similarly, Jamie Bailey did the same and created the Canadian slasher film, Mickey’s Mouse Trap, which was released last August. Both Mickey’s Mouse Trap and Screamboat take the black-and-white animated whistling Mickey and twist him into terrifying and hilarious horror-comedy adaptations for Disney fans who also enjoy the flagrant bastardization of beloved childhood characters. Much like airplanes, submarines are an excellent setting for films, especially in the horror and thriller genres. Not only are they inherently claustrophobic, but they also provide a great reason for the characters to stick around rather than run off to save themselves and get help. Also, as an added bonus, as long as you have access to a good simulator or a decommissioned craft, the Hmcs Ojibwa in this case, they can be shot economically on one location.

This year saw one of the most zealously-guarded corporate empires of intellectual property spring a leak, as all the Magic Kingdom’s horses and men couldn’t keep Mickey Mouse from entering the public domain. Strictly speaking, what was no longer protected were the first three shorts in which that fabled rodent appeared, all made in 1928 — so, under current U.S. laws, their copyrights have now expired. Two years prior, the same thing happened to author A.A. Milne’s whimsical anthropomorphic creations. That liberation resulted in the quickie horror cash-in “Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey,” a near-unwatchable enterprise that cheered no one outside its makers’ accountants. Ergo, 2024 has brought us “The Mouse Trap,” which could even worse than “B&h,” which set a bar so low it was subterranean.

This Canadian production from director Jamie Bailey and writer-actor Simon Phillips no doubt hoped to spin its bad-taste concept toward similar viral-phenomenon status.

The earliest version of the conglomerate’s iconic Mickey Mouse character is now up for grabs — and the team behind the upcoming horror film “The Mouse Trap” wasted no time reimagining Mickey as a murderer.

Jamie Bailey directs the twisted take on the mouse with Simon Phillips playing the serial killer version of Mickey. The teaser trailer was released January 1 to announce the project just as the character entered the public domain and legally could be incorporated in Disney-less films.

The 1928 version of Mickey Mouse entered the public domain on Monday, and indie horror producers are wasting no time in capitalizing on it.

Steven Lamorte is set to direct an untitled horror-comedy based on Mickey’s cartoon debut. In it, a sadistic mouse will torment a group of unsuspecting ferry passengers. Production is set to begin in the spring.

“Steamboat Willie has brought joy to generations, but beneath that cheerful exterior lies a potential for pure, unhinged terror,” Lamorte said in a press release. “It’s a project I’ve been dreaming of, and I can’t wait to unleash this twisted take on this beloved character to the world.”

Lamorte previously directed “The Mean One,” a horror parody of the Grinch.

“It all comes from our love of these characters,” he said in an interview.

Winnie the Pooh got his own (unofficial) horror movie last year with Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, and this year it’s Mickey Mouse’s turn to (unofficially) do a little slicing and dicing.

The Mickey Mouse character entered the public domain just yesterday and already the first teaser trailer has been unleashed for Mickey’s Mouse Trap, an upcoming low-budget horror movie that was obviously shot before the character fell into the public domain but is only being announced and previewed now that Disney can’t actually come after the filmmaking team.

Following in the footsteps of Winnie The Pooh: Blood And Honey, Mickey’s Mouse Trap is taking full advantage of a famous character being in the public domain now.

Well, it was bound to happen. With Mickey Mouse entering the public domain on 1 January, someone was going to make the iconic mouse the star of a horror film.

That someone is Jamie Bailey. Much like last year’s Winnie The Pooh: Blood And Honey, Mickey’s Mouse Trap imagines the lovable mouse as a cold-blooded killer.

At 12:01 am this morning, the earliest iteration of one of the world’s most beloved children’s characters entered the public domain. Shortly thereafter, the trailer for a slasher film called Mickey’s Mouse Trap was posted online.

In it, clips from Walt Disney’s 1928 animated classic Steamboat Willie are shown interspersed with newly-shot footage that tells the story of a mouse mask-wearing killer who stalks college-age kids at an arcade.

On the first day that Disney’s 1928 short Steamboat Willie entered the public domain, a trailer has dropped for a horror comedy film featuring none other than Mickey Mouse as the killer.

The synopsis for the film, called Mickey’s Mouse Trap, reads: “It’s Alex’s 21st birthday, but she’s stuck at the amusement arcade on a late shift so her friends decide to surprise her, but a masked killer dressed as Mickey Mouse decides to play a game of his own with them which she must survive.”

The trailer features, yep, a person in a Mickey Mouse costume, wearing what resembles a hockey jersey without the letters, attacking a victim and stalking others inside a Chuck E.
