Christos Massalas serves as writer and director of the film and has previously received several awards and nominations for his shorts Copa-Loca, Flowers and Bottoms, and Make Up. With a runtime of 97 minutes, Broadway is Massalas' feature film debut. Starring Elsa Lekakou as Nelly, the ensemble cast also includes Foivos Papadopoulos as Barbara/Jonas, Stathis Apostolou as Markos, Rafael Papad as Rudolph, and Salim Talbi as Mohammad.

Corey Deshon’s debut feature has echoes of horrific cases of basement imprisonment, but doesn’t quite coalesce into a clear vision

There are echoes of the Turpin case and Josef Fritzl’s basement in this tense arthouse horror shot in grainy 16mm with auteurish confidence by first-time film-maker Corey Deshon. It opens with a claim to be “more based on fact than fiction”, but actually tells an entirely fictional story about the kidnapping of a young woman (Vivien Ngô) who wakes up shackled to the floor in a garage. In front of her stands a man known only as Father (Casper Van Dien). You can tell instantly from his plaid checked shirt, beige slacks and straight-backed posture that he’s the type of Christian you don’t mess with in a horror movie: wholesome looking, but unhinged.

“We’re not violent people,” Father tells the chained-up woman, sounding almost reasonable.

The Last of Us Part 2 video game voice and performance actor, Ian Alexander, recently shared that they want to reprise their role in The Last of Us season 2. The popular zombie-horror HBO television series is based on the award-winning PlayStation video game of the same name. Pedro Pascal stars as Joel Miller, a hardened black market smuggler who is tasked to transport 14-year-old orphan Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across a post-apocalyptic United States to the Fireflies, a militant revolutionary faction that aims to save the world.

Speaking with Insider, Alexander explained that they wished to reprise their original game role in The Last of Us season 2. The actor portrayed Lev, a 13-year-old trans boy who was outcast from the religious fundamentalist survivor group known as the Seraphites. Alexander expressed their excitement about The Last of Us season 2 and hopes to return to the popular franchise as Lev.

First up, director Erik Bloomquist (Ten Minutes to Midnight, Long Lost) is back with She Came from the Woods, an ’80s-set summer camp slasher movie that’s now playing in theaters.

We don’t yet have a home video release date, but we expect one soon.

However, their new addition isn't there by choice. Taken from her old life and forced to go by the name "Sister," a young woman must carefully tread the line between obedient and subversive if she hopes to survive long enough to make her great escape.

Casper Van Dien plays Father, the antagonist of the story who keeps Sister held against her will. Van Dien has worked on a multitude of projects, several of which have 2023 release dates. However, Van Dien is most notably known for his role as Johnny Rico in Starship Troopers. Vivien Ngô, Elyse Dinh, and Ian Alexander star alongside him in Daughter, making up the rest of the ensemble cast. Corey Deshon serves as the film's writer and director.

Available in theaters, on Digital, and On Demand starting February 10, Daughter is a new micro-budget thriller from Darkstar Pictures. When a young woman finds herself held hostage by a family of three, she has no choice but to play the role of "Sister." While obeying Father and entertaining Brother is the key to survival, Sister is determined to push Father's boundaries and win back her freedom. However, the longer Sister remains trapped, the clearer it becomes that not everything in the house is as it seems.

In addition to directing, Corey Deshon also serves as the film's writer and producer. Previously, Deshon directed the shorts Voice and To Police, and has additional writing credits on projects such as A Million Little Things and Trespassers. Vivien Ngô plays the starring role of sister, with Casper Van Dien, Elyse Dinh, and Ian Alexander completing the ensemble cast.

Darkstar Pictures' new release, Daughter, is available in theaters, on Digital, and On Demand beginning Friday, February 10. Shot on 16mm film, Daughter centers around a young woman who is kidnapped by an unconventional family and forced to play the role of "Sister." The chamber piece grows in intensity as Sister's acts of defiance continue to provoke Father, the leader of the household. When events reach a boiling point, Sister must decide whether to conform to Father's rules or risk her life for a chance at freedom.

Yet despite its well-worn pitch, Corey Deshon’s debut feels fresh, due in large part to its visual presentation, textured characters and stimulating story. The promising director breathes much-needed new life into an often tropey subgenre of horror.

Combined with footage of two gas-masked figures, Father, and Brother chasing down a young woman it gives the feeling that we’re about to see another piece of low budget psycho cinema. When they catch up to her Father beats her to death with a hammer, which only reinforces that impression.

Impressions can be deceiving however and Corey Deshon who makes his feature film directorial debut, having previously written Trespassers, has something very different in mind even if it isn’t immediately obvious.

In an Instagram post shared Thursday, King posted a video of a lit lantern flying in the sky on what would’ve been her late son, Ian Alexander Jr.’s 27th birthday.

“January 19th is Ian’s Worthday. As we still process his physical absence, we celebrate his presence,” King wrote. “We are all in different places on the planet…so is Ian. His spirit is the thread that connects us.”
