While most streaming services get a bad reputation for canceling fan-favorite shows like Westworld, The Winchesters, and Mindhunter, Netflix gets it even worse for canceling fan-favorite shows in their infancy. Sometimes, fan backlash can save a show from getting canceled outright, either by it getting a smaller final season like Superman & Lois, or getting shopped to another platform. In most cases, however, the series stays dead. But that isn’t the case for The Oa.
Six years ago, the sci-fi series was unceremoniously canceled by Netflix, and fans weren’t happy. The series, co-created by Brit Marlingand Zal Batmanglij, was widely loved by fans for a gripping plot, supernatural elements, and fantastical yet grounded storytelling. Its cancellation also left fans on a major cliffhanger at the end of Season 2. In the indie comedy “She’s the He,” which premiered at SXSW on Sunday, high school seniors Alex and Ethan decide during the last week of school to pretend they’re trans so they can sneak into the women’s locker room. If that sounds like a premise lifted right out of Maga-era attacks on trans rights, it’s because it is — that’s the point.
First-time writer-director Siobhan McCarthy dreamed up the idea just over a year ago, in February 2024, after discovering online that the one high school comedy that spoke to them as a teenager — the 2006 Amanda Bynes comedy “She’s the Man” — was just as formative for many other trans kids. That led to a conversation with their friend, Will Geare (who co-edited “She’s the He” with McCarthy), about the kinds of trans stories they both wished they’d been able to see when they were younger.

The Shire, more specifically the village of Hobbiton, is arguably the most iconic location from Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. It was the home of the series' protagonist, Frodo Baggins, as well as other hobbits, such as Bilbo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, Meriadoc Brandybuck, and Peregrin Took. It felt like home to the audience as well; the prologue of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring mainly took place in the desolate wasteland of Mordor, so the Shire offered the first true glimpse of a Middle-earth civilization. Dr. Hugh Culber brought LGBTQ+ representation to Star Trek, becoming a father figure to queer teens. Culber's resilience and compassion make him a standout character, embodying non-toxic masculinity. Wilson Cruz's portrayal of Culber made a memorable impact, bringing depth and diversity to Star Trek.
On Star Trek: Discovery, Wilson Cruz plays Dr. Hugh Culber, one of the USS Discovery's medical doctors. Unlike earlier Star Trek series, which often focused on a single character as the series' Chief Medical Officer, Star Trek: Discovery season 1 gave equal weight to both Dr. Hugh Culber and Dr. Tracy Pollard (Raven Dauda). At any given moment, either Dr. Culber or Dr. Pollard might be in attendance in Discovery's sick bay. As Star Trek: Discovery went on, Hugh Culber became a standout character, exemplifying physical resilience, emotional wisdom, and ongoing curiosity, with a poignant character arc resolving science and spirituality.

The cancellation of beloved TV shows like The Oa and Mindhunter can leave fans with unanswered questions and disappointment. Fans' support through campaigns and demonstrations can sometimes save a show from being canceled due to strong audience interest. Reboots and revivals of canceled TV shows like Hannibal and Gossip Girl are possible if actors, writers, and showrunners are willing to return.
When a TV show is canceled, it's normal for audience members and the show's creators to hold out hope that it might return. While some series reach their natural conclusion or have always planned to have a limited number of seasons, others are cut short before their time, leaving unanswered questions and unfinished character arcs. This can be immensely disappointing, especially if audiences have spent years becoming invested in the story, only to never discover how it ends. When "Star Trek: Discovery" signed off last month, it left a few character arcs hanging. That's because the show's cancellation wasn't announced until season 5 had already wrapped, leading to a season finale that was reworked into a series finale with the help of quick rewrites and some additional footage.
Luckily, several main characters still got their happy ending despite the Paramount+ bait-and-switch, and Blu del Barrio's ensign Adira Tal was one of them. Adira joined the Discovery crew as an orphan with a Trill symbiont for a boyfriend. By season 5's ending, Adira had come into their own as a member of the crew, found a family in the form of parent figures Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) and Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz), and amicably ended things with their partner, Gray (Ian Alexander), after he was separated from them and placed into a body of his own.

This Star Trek: Discovery article contains spoilers.
Star Trek: Discovery has always been about change. The series started with a bang in 2017, complete with radically-altered Klingons and a heretofore unseen adopted sister to Spock. From that audacious beginning, Discovery became something more like a standard Star Trek series, while also retaining its own unique (and much more emotional) approach to storytelling.
To be sure, Discovery isn’t for everyone. Its focus on single protagonist Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and its emphasis on emotion over logic made it very different from most Trek series. But even the most traditional Trekkie can appreciate its best major additions to franchise lore.
Into the 32nd Century
It’s hard for Trekkies to avoid rolling our eyes when we read announcements about upcoming Trek projects. Another reboot, another prequel. Sure, Strange New Worlds has been wonderful, but that’s the exception. Too much of new...

In Discovery season 5, episode 3, "Jinaal", Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) heads to Trill to collect the next clue in the hunt for the Progenitors' treasure. The return trip to the home planet of DS9's Dax is also a way for Ensign Adira Tal (Blu del Barrio) to reconnect with Gray Tal (Ian Alexander), as...

Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 3 - “Jinaal”
Star Trek: Discovery failed to make Adira and Gray's romance work due to a focus on Adira's character. Gray's development suffered as he wasn't given the main character status that Adira had in Discovery. The breakup of Adira and Gray in season 5 was sad but necessary for the show's narrative progression.
Star Trek: Discovery never figured out what to do with Adira (Blu del Barrio) and Gray (Ian Alexander), making their breakup in season 5 necessary. Written by Kyle Jarrow and Lauren Wilkinson and directed by Andi Armaganian, Discovery season 5, episode 3, "Jinaal," saw the USS Discovery travel to Trill to get another clue in their search for the Progenitor's technology. Although most of the episode was focused on Captain Micheal Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Cleveland Booker (David Ajala), the plot also allowed Adira to reunite with Gray after a long separation...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episode 3 “Jinaal.”] As Star Trek: Discovery‘s final season continues, the third episode delivers an hour full of change. First, Adira (Blu del Barrio) and Gray (Ian Alexander) reunite when the crew’s mission leads to Trill, but they know that even though they’ve been acting like everything is normal over holo-chats, it’s not. And once together in person, both acknowledge that things have felt very different and each is following a different path. Adira offers to put in for a transfer, but Gray wouldn’t want them to do that for him, just like he knows they wouldn’t want him to give up what he’s doing for them. And with that, they know they have to break up. Moving forward, “I think we do definitely see a little bit of a difference with them, especially that immediate period of time post-breakup,...

They have boldly gone where no Star Trek has gone before. Literally. We’re talking 930 years in the future. But Star Trek: Discovery (affectionately known as Disco) will be remembered for more than that innovative Season 2 plot twist. Showrunner and Trek titan Alex Kurtzman reinvented the franchise with Disco, which became a huge success and helped launch Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek: Prodigy, and the upcoming Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and streamer film Star Trek: Section 31, starring Michelle Yeoh.
So, get ready: The fifth and final season premieres April 4 on Paramount+. The cast tells us that the end generally feels “bittersweet,” mostly because they didn’t know going into Season 5 that it would be their last adventure together. Every franchise out there should be making casting choices that reflect the breadth and diversity of humanity we see every single day in our own lives, but "Star Trek" in particular has even more reason than others to do so. Heralded from its earliest conception as a progressive, forward-thinking, and uniquely idealistic series of stories, the property has done its best to maintain creator Gene Roddenberry's grand vision throughout its 50+ years of existence. That's not to say "Star Trek" has a perfect track record or has avoided certain missed opportunities over the years. Still, the franchise has always gone much further and more boldly than its contemporaries could ever claim to do.
As /Film's Jacob Hall notes in his review of the "Discovery" season 5 premiere, this particular "Star Trek" series has always made it a point to foreground characters of marginalized identities who rarely get a moment in the spotlight in most other entertainment.

Star Trek offers relatable characters for fans to identify with, making the optimistic future accessible to everyone. The franchise includes a wide range of characters representing different perspectives and experiences of humanity. Star Trek's diverse characters, such as Adira Tal, Jake Sisko, and Raffi Musiker, have imperfections that make them real and relatable to viewers.

Star Trek: The Next Generation's Commander William T. Riker was the first human to be joined with a Trill, setting up a storyline that connects him to Star Trek: Discovery over 800 years later. Adira Tal from Star Trek: Discovery became the first successful non-Trill host in two thousand years. Adira's successful joining with the Tal symbiont provided a potential solution for the Trill culture's struggle following the loss of viable hosts during the Burn.
Star Trek: The Next Generation's Commander William T. Riker (Jonathan Frakes) set up a storyline that Star Trek: Discovery would later continue over 800 years in the future. Jonathan Frakes has directed multiple episodes of Discovery, including the upcoming finale, and so the connections between Riker and Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) have been strong throughout. However, it's an alien species better known from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine that creates the strongest story link between Riker and Discovery.

Christos Massalas serves as writer and director of the film and has previously received several awards and nominations for his shorts Copa-Loca, Flowers and Bottoms, and Make Up. As a spinoff from Star Trek: Discovery, the newly announced Star Trek: Starfleet Academy can feature multiple members of the USS Discovery crew and other characters from its 32nd-century universe. Executive produced by Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau, Starfleet Academy will focus on the first intake of cadets since the legendary institution reopened its doors following the devastating effects of the Burn. A focus on the young cadets makes it unlikely that Mary Wiseman, who plays Lieutenant Sylvia Tilly, will be a lead, but she could have a recurring role in shaping this next generation of Starfleet officers.
Keeping Tilly in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy would allow the show to build on the universe established by Star Trek: Discovery after it comes to an end with season 5. As an instructor at the Academy, Tilly could request the presence of her former crewmates as visiting tutors. Interestingly, the press release teased...

Elyse Dinh, Casper Van Dien, Vivien Ngô and Ian Alexander in Daughter
A small scale film which plays with established genre tropes to misdirect viewers en route to an ending which takes it in a very different direction, Daughter provides a platform for underserved Asian American actors and stars Caspar Van Dien in a role unlike anything he’s previously done. He plays a man known only as Father, who presides over a makeshift family of people he has kidnapped in a remote, fortified home. After an opening sequence which illustrates what happens when one of them tries to escape, we meet Daughter/Sister (Vivien Ngô), a young woman who must quickly make sense of her situation if she is to survive. Corey Deshon’s debut feature has echoes of horrific cases of basement imprisonment, but doesn’t quite coalesce into a clear vision
There are echoes of the Turpin case and Josef Fritzl’s basement in this tense arthouse horror shot in grainy 16mm with auteurish confidence by first-time film-maker Corey Deshon. It opens with a claim to be “more based on fact than fiction”, but actually tells an entirely fictional story about the kidnapping of a young woman (Vivien Ngô) who wakes up shackled to the floor in a garage. In front of her stands a man known only as Father (Casper Van Dien). You can tell instantly from his plaid checked shirt, beige slacks and straight-backed posture that he’s the type of Christian you don’t mess with in a horror movie: wholesome looking, but unhinged.
“We’re not violent people,” Father tells the chained-up woman, sounding almost reasonable.

The basic premise of the movie Daughter is a familiar one; a woman is held captive by a dangerous man until she can make her daring escape. It’s an unfortunately timeless tale rooted in both reality and fiction, and no matter how much mileage it gains, people take notice, wanting to know how everything turns out. Yet despite its well-worn pitch, Corey Deshon’s debut feels fresh, due in large part to its visual presentation, textured characters and stimulating story. The promising director breathes much-needed new life into an often tropey subgenre of horror.

“The following is based more on fact than fiction.” These words appear in Daughter’s opening credits. Combined with footage of two gas-masked figures, Father, and Brother chasing down a young woman it gives the feeling that we’re about to see another piece of low budget psycho cinema. When they catch up to her Father beats her to death with a hammer, which only reinforces that impression.
Impressions can be deceiving however and Corey Deshon who makes his feature film directorial debut, having previously written Trespassers, has something very different in mind even if it isn’t immediately obvious.

She then acknowledged how orange was Alexander’s favorite color, the same hue her lit lantern was: “Of course orange is your favorite color…Its the fire and the calm. I see you in everything I breath.”
She finished her message with, “My absolute favorite thing about myself is being ….Regina the mother of Ian the GodKing. Continue to shine bright, my guiding light.”
