Exclusive: Italian sales agent Intramovies has boarded Slovak director Tereza Nvotová’s Father, which is set to world premiere in Venice’s Horizons competition.

Father is the third film from Nvotová, whose feminist horror-drama Nightsiren won the Golden Leopard at Locarno in the Filmmakers of the Present competition in 2022.

Father won the Screen International Award last year at Mia Market’s work-in-progress programme C EU Soon.

An upcoming film adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s A Pale View Of Hills is to be co-produced by Lava Films, the Polish production company whose credits include Oscar-nominated The Girl With The Needle.

Lava Films will handle post-production on the mystery drama, which is directed by Japanese filmmaker Kei Ishikawa and was shot in Japan and the UK.

It has also been confirmed that Japan’s Gaga Corporation will handle international sales and is set to introduce the title to buyers at the European Film Market (EFM) in Berlin next month.

Tereza Nvotova’s drama Father (Otec) has won the Screen International Award at the C EU Soon work-in-progress programme at Rome’s Mia Market.

Inspired by real events, Father is about a man who has everything – until one tragic summer day, when he realises too late that the infant daughter he thought he dropped off at nursery is still locked in the back of his car.

A Slovak, Czech and Polish co-production, Father is produced by Veronika Pastekovaá and Anton Skreko of Danae Production, Karel Chvojka and Milos Lochman of Moloko Film, and Marta Gmosińska and Mariusz Włodarski of Lava Films.

Poland’s Warsaw Film Festival is celebrating its 40th edition, placing its bets on emerging, often debuting Polish filmmakers.

“This event often acts like a springboard,” says programming director Gustaw Kolanowski. But making a feature debut in Poland is still challenging.

“For me, this road wasn’t easy. It was difficult to meet a producer who would believe in a film that’s quiet and intimate, but also impactful,” says Monika Majorek, behind “Where Do We Begin,” where three siblings and their mother rebuild their lives after the death of their father.

“I’ve made certain career choices to be able to tell this story and waited a long time for this opportunity. I was advised to look for some loud, controversial subject, but this film comes out of real emotions. Maybe there’s a lack of quiet voices [in Polish cinema]? Those that listen instead of speaking?”

Brussels-based company Best Friend Forever has acquired international rights of Alireza Khatami’s “The Things You Kill.” The film is in post-production.

Khatami is already known for Cannes 2023 Un Certain Regard title “Terrestrial Verses” and “Oblivion Verses,” which was awarded best screenplay in Venice Horizons competition 2017 and won the Fipresci Prize.

Le Pacte will release “The Things You Kill” in France.

In the film, Ali, a university professor, is haunted by the suspicious death of his ailing mother, and coerces his enigmatic gardener to execute a cold-blooded act of vengeance. As long-buried family secrets resurface, the police tighten their noose, and doubts begin eroding his conscience, Ali has no choice but to look into the abyss of his own soul.

The star-studded Turkish cast includes Ekin Koç (“Burning Days”), Erkan Kolçakköstendil, Hazar Ergüçlü (“The Wild Pear Tree”) and Ercan Kesal (“Once Upon a Time in Anatolia”).

French sales agency Loco Films has boarded erotic love story “Borders of Love,” which world premieres in competition at Karlovy Vary Film Festival. The company has debuted the film’s first trailer.

The Czech-Polish movie centers on Petr and Hana, who – after years together – share their unspoken erotic fantasies. What begins as an innocent conversation gradually turns into experimentation with a non-monogamous approach to their relationship. This debut by Tomasz Wiński “explores various forms of intimacy and the possibilities of its depiction on the big screen,” according to a statement.

Loco’s Laurent Danielou said: “We are thrilled and excited to work on such an elegant, inflaming and deep movie where the director manages to bring this hot subject to a high level.”
