Being a parent is almost never easy. But probably one of the scariest times is when you’re expecting for the first time. All those nagging fears, insecurities, excitement, apprehensions and outside interference can really do a number on the mind when it is at its most vulnerable. “Lazy Hazy Crazy” director Luk Yee-sum delves into exactly these issues with her breezy sophomore effort “Baby: The Secret Diary of a Mom To Be”.

Following Three (Fantasia 2016), master filmmaker Johnnie To is back with Chasing Dream: an unexpected blend of mixed-martial-arts drama and high-stakes musical comedy, taking the viewers back to the madcap energy of his mid-2000s collaborations with Wai Ka-Fai and the themes of his sports-and-destiny masterpiece Throw Down.

Film Review: Missbehaviour (2019) by Pang Ho-cheung
Pang Ho-cheung’s latest film “Missbehaviour” is a light and bubbly comedy of friends, held together by a downpour of gags, ranging from slapstick, to sarcastic, to toilet humour vulgarity. The Hong Kong director is a bona fide master of grown-up comedy, being responsible of many excellent additions to the genre, from the popular thirty-something romance trilogy to the more extreme “Vulgaria”, “Sdu: Sex Duties Unit” (as writer) and “Va”.

“Missbehavior” is screening at New York Asian Film Festival (Nyaff) 2019

Not a proper Lunar New Year’s movie, “Missbehaviour” is in fact a reminder of the importance of getting together and not neglecting friendship. It is indeed what New Year’s holiday is all about – friends and family – and therefore it fits quite well in the festive spirit. The film focuses on a group of 8 close friends, members of a WhatsApp chat called “Ba Po” that for a series of...

Z Storm (2014) Movie Review
Hong Kong thrillers have been lifting their game of late, with the likes of “Cold War” and “Firestorm” combining big budget action, star power and contemporary political and social concerns to generally solid effect. “Z Storm”, the first film in many years from veteran director David Lam (“First Shot”) is the latest to try and emulate their success, featuring Louis Koo (“Overheard”) fighting against corruption and financial intrigue in the form of Michael Wong (“Firestorm”), Gordon Lam (“Cold War”) and others, with Dada Chan (“Vulgaria”) on hand in the usual token female role. The plot revolves around the activities of Hong Kong’s Independent Commission Against Corruption (Icac) and its investigations into profiteering and misbehaviour in the police force. Louis Koo plays Icac senior investigator William Luk, the film opening with him investigating a case of extortion involving Ccb (Commercial Crime Bureau) Superintendent Wong Man Bin (Gordon Lam). As Luk...

Wtf? Chapman To Is A Horny Time-Travelling Pilot In Wong Jing's Flirting In The Air
Chapman To and Dada Chan are reunited onscreen in another raunchy comedy, this time set in the world of playboy airline pilots and sexy stewardesses - that is until Captain Cool (To) and his wingmen are transported back in time to Ming Dynasty China. That's the premise of Flirting In The Air, the latest offering from Hong Kong uber-producer Wong Jing. Amen Cheung directs a cast that also includes Lam Tze Chung, Dominic Ho, Ben Cheung and Connie Man.The first trailer has just dropped and while it's unclear exactly how explicit the sexual antics are going to get, the script is certainly peppered with enough foul-mouthed humour to suggest Flirting In The Air has set its sights on attracting the same crowds that flocked to...

Hardcore Comedy (2013) Movie Review
With the success of Pang Ho Cheung’s foul mouthed and hilarious “Vulgaria” having proved that rude and crude are still popular at the Hong Kong box office, it’s only natural that other film makers would follow suit. And so, up step directors Andy Lo, Henri Wong and Chong Siu Wing with the category III rated “Hardcore Comedy”, which as its title suggests, aims for raucous pop culture laughs and unfettered bawdiness. Split into three linked stories and revolving around sex, drugs, superheroes and more, the film has a cast packed with attractive faces, including Dada Chan (“Vulgaria”), Michelle Wai (“Girl$”), Christine Kuo (“Lan Kwai Fong 2”), Kelvin Kwan (“Tales from the Dark 2”), Oscar Leung (“Young and Dangerous Reloaded”) and William Chan (“Triad”). The film opens with Henri Wong’s “Shocking Wet Dreams”, in which a couple of college losers (Kelvin Kwan and Terence Siufay) are forced by a...

Hardcore comedy in, um, Hardcore Comedy
Well this looks absolutely insane. Three different stories directed by emerging directors Andy Lo, Henri Wong and Chong Siu Wing, starring hot young stars Dada Chan, Michelle Wai, Christine Kuo, Kelvin Kwan, Oscar Leung and William Chan. No stone is left unturned in Hardcore Comedy, serving up a heady mix of sex, gambling, drugs and Hong Kong culture. Undoubtedly a large slice of hit and miss, but the trailer is exhausting (in a good way) and an English subtitled DVD is available from October 18th 2013, and you can pre-order your copy here. It'll probably be a good idea to keep the aspirin on standby if the trailer is anything to go by. You have been warned... Synopsis: In "Erotic Dream," two college geeks (Kelvin Kwan, Terence Siufay) move into an old building packed with brothels. Over time, they turn into superheroes trying to save these women from selling their bodies.

Vulgaria: Review #2
Director: Pang Ho-Cheung. Review: Adam Wing. Vulgarity, profanity and popping candy are the order of the day in Pang Ho-Cheung’s (Dream Home, Love in a Puff) latest box-office smash, not only a number one box-office hit back home but also one of the highest grossing Hong Kong films of 2012. A voice over warns of impending profanity, in itself a blessing and a curse, which sets the scene for smart arsed cynicism, outrageous comedy and the occasional unsuspecting mule. Pang's latest effort was filmed in just twelve days on a shoestring budget, and much of the dialogue was written or improvised on set, which didn’t prevent it from acquiring a number of international accolades as well as three nominations at the 49th Golden Horse Awards, namely Best Actor (Chapman To), Best Supporting Actor (Ronald Cheng) and Best Supporting Actress (Dada Chan). To (Chapman To), a long-time movie producer, has...

Hk Cat. III comedy Vulgaria is coming Stateside
Do you like your Hong Kong comedies edgy, risque and hilarious? If your answer is yes and you live in the U.S. then today is a good day for you as we've been told that Vulgaria, the new comedy by Pang Ho-cheung will be hitting select theaters in North America on September 28th. The film's been getting rave reviews on the festival circuit this year and a Category III rating by the Hk censors pretty much guarantees a certain amount of... well, just look at that poster. The film stars Chapman To, Dada Chan, Ronald Cheng, Yam Yam Siu and Fiona Sit. Synopsis: Movie producer To Wai-Cheung (Chapman To) embarks on producing his next opus b-film. In order to make it happen, Ta Wai-Cheung must get funding from mainland triad boss Tyrannosaurus and enlist the involvement of 1970's movie star Susan Shaw in a softcore porn remake.
