Dragon Ball Daima English Dub Officially Invents New Franchise Holiday
Image
A brand-new holiday has been invented in the English dub for Dragon Ball Daima. Episode 1, "Conspiracy," premiered on Crunchyroll on Jan. 10, 2025.

In the English dub of Daima Episode 1, the Z-warriors and friends are seen celebrating Trunk’s ninth birthday. After congratulating Trunks, the gang does a quick shout-out to the anniversary of Earth returning to existence after everything that happened with Kid Buu in Dragon Ball Z. While this isn’t too different from the Japanese version of the episode, the English dub has everyone declaring "Happy Return to Existence Day, Earth!" after wishing Trunks well.

CES: Sony Group Deepens Investments in Booming Anime Sector
Image
Sony Group unveiled a new focus to its business strategy on Monday at the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, and it was an area that sits somewhat adjacent to all of the things the Japanese conglomerate has long been famous for — electronics, gaming, Hollywood moviemaking and a richly valued music catalog. The firm suggested it was pinning a sizable share of its future growth on anime, the formerly niche content category that continues to impress analysts as one of Japan’s most lucrative cultural exports.

Sony has been putting the pieces together for a major emphasis on anime for several years, but the high-profile presentation at CES marked the first time the group publicly underscored just how much firepower it plans to bring to bear on the sector. Joining Sony president and COO Hiroki Totoki on stage in Vegas were Rahul Purini, president of Sony’s anime specialty streamer Crunchyroll,...

Demon Slayer Passes Baton to Dune Part Two With #1 Box Office for New Debut
Image
The popular Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – To the Hashira Training movie was the #1 debuting title this week, and now, it prepares to pass the baton to what many suspect will be the biggest opening debut in recent memory with Denis Villeneuve's Dune 2.

Via Box Office Mojo, Demon Slayer: To the Hashira Training recorded $11.575,000 in revenue for the weekend of Feb. 23-Feb. 25, 2024. While this lost out to Bob Marley: One Love for the outright #1 movie of the weekend ($13.5 million), Demon Slayer did register the #1 debut, with the Bob Marley biopic released on Feb. 14 in North America. Both will bow out of contention next weekend, however, with Dune 2 a near-lock to eclipse both of them. Industry commentators like Variety are suggesting the upcoming sci-fi epic could make anywhere between $60-90 million across its first 3 days.

Demon Slayer Fans See Tanjiro and Zenitsu in Louis Vuitton's New Designs
Image
The new Louis Vuitton Men’s Spring Summer collection is going viral among anime fans for its striking resemblance to several Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba characters.

Via SoraNews 24, the new Louis Vuitton collection, created under the direction of musician and rumored anime fan Pharrell Williams, has released several bags and apparel items nearly identical to Tanjiro Kamado’s signature over-kimono haori pattern. Its classic damier (meaning "checkerboard" in French) pattern and Tanjiro’s ichimatsu ("check-patterned" in Japanese) have the obvious print similarity, but the unique shade of green used in the collection is essentially also a dead-on match for Tanjiro’s haori. Fans on both X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit have been pointing out the similarities, especially in the Christopher Mm backpack, priced at $3,700 Usd.

Studio Ghibli Staffer Says How the "Weakening" Anime Industry Can Be Fixed
Image
Studio Ghibli veteran Shigeo Akahori has highlighted some solutions to the many issues plaguing the anime industry -- most notably, the large divide between management and field animators.

Akahori highlighted this divide in his interview with Gamebiz, where he added that in his 40 years as an animator, he'd never even seen the overall budget breakdown that went into an anime. He said newer animators are tepid, weaker at negotiation and lack the force of personality of the previous generation. The upper brass needs to negotiate with those at the bottom and allow staff to reap rewards from copyright and licensing. On the creative side, he added that in the early days of TV animation, talented creators "were able to freely use their ingenuity, resulting in many masterpieces, and seeing this, even more talented people entered the anime industry." However, nowadays, "it is important for manga originals to be faithful to the original work,...

Demon Slayer Producer: Japan's Anime Industry Remains Unmatched
Image
Atsuhiro Iwakami, CEO of Demon Slayer producers Aniplex, has heaped praise on the anime series and says that currently, no other country can compete with Japan in its ability to keep producing unique characters and worldviews.

Iwakami spoke to Nikkei about the current state of Japanese anime. He was reserved on the business side of things, praising Hollywood movies such as Spider-Man: No Way Home for its combination of creativity and box office revenue. He also added that the anime industry still had a ways to go compared to how global gaming companies, for example, are based all over the world. Iwakami added, however, that "Anime international competition is becoming fierce, but Japan still has its strengths. It is the strength of the IP created by Japanese manga artists and anime creators. Japan is the only country capable of continuously producing unique character traits and worldviews."
