Private equity fund Muv Capital is allying with Brazilian distribution company Retrato Filmes to co-invest in its distribution slate of projects, including acquisition of buzzy titles made for Brazil and Latin America at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Muv Capital’s initial investments have been made in the music industry and fine arts. Its alliance with Retrato is its first audiovisual investment in Brazil and first solo project. Before landing his lead role in Tina Fey’s Netflix dramedy series “The Four Seasons,” U.S.-based Italian multi-hyphenate Marco Calvani had not acted in over a decade.
Calvani, who was born and raised in the city of Prato, near Florence, trained as an actor in Tuscany when he was a teenager and has appeared in several Italian and international TV shows and films, including Tom Fontana’s series “Borgia” produced by Barry Levinson. But he gradually made the transition to becoming a playwright and film director.
“By the time I wrote my fourth play, I started to direct and I was like, ‘I don’t want to act anymore. It’s great, but everything I’ve learned as an actor, now I want to put it into writing and directing,'” he recalls in an interview with Variety.

When Kit Williamson’s “EastSiders” premiered on YouTube in December 2012, Netflix had not yet debuted its first original series. A dozen years later, streaming has overtaken traditional television in the market — and Williamson is back with another LGBTQ+ slice of life show, this time in the form of “Unconventional” on Revry.
“I don’t know that anybody really predicted it becoming what it’s become,” the actor/creator/writer/director told TheWrap of the streaming boom. “I hope that there is an increasing demand for independently created television when we live in such a, let’s be honest, metric-driven world where algorithms are deciding whether or not stories get told or continued.”
“Will we have the same four-quadrant appeal as ‘7th Heaven’? No, we won’t. But that’s Ok,” Williamson explained. “We need specific stories that cater to our communities authentically and don’t pull their punches or try...

The show is set to launch on LGBTQ+ streamer Revry on February 11 and you can watch the first trailer for it above.
The trailer introduces Noah and Margot, two queer siblings played by Williamson and Aubrey Shea. Things take a turn when their estranged conservative father re-enters their lives—forcing them into an unexpected collision of ideals, activism, and family dysfunction.
The series comes from EastSiders’ Kit Williamson, who stars alongside James Bland, Aubrey Shea, Briana Venskus, Willam Belli, Dana Wheeler-Nicholson, Laith Ashley, James Urbaniak and Kathy Griffin.

Kit Williamson, best known for creating and starring in the Emmy-nominated series “EastSiders,” is back with “Unconventional.”
Premiering on LGBTQ streaming platform Revry on Feb. 11, the TV comedy series stars Williamson as Noah, a queer millennial questioning the future of his 10-year marriage to his husband Dan (James Bland). At the same time, Noah becomes the sperm donor to his sister Margot’s wife, Eliza. Each episode follows a month of the pregnancy.
As Williamson first told me when I broke the news about the show’s Revry deal, “Unconventional” is “unapologetically queer.”
“I think we’re in a really interesting inflection point where I think we’re being told to quiet down, and I actually think that the opposite approach is what is needed,” Williamson says, alluding to the Trump administration’s anti-lgbtq policies and directives. “I’m not going to quiet down. Kit Williamson’s new scripted half-hour comedy series “Unconventional” has been acquired by LGBTQ streaming network Revry.
Williamson, a six-time Emmy nominee best known as the creator and star of “Eastsiders,” stars in “Unconventional” as Noah Guillory, a queer millennial struggling with his 10-year marriage, possibly starting a family, and the future of his PhD program while also acting as the sperm donor to his sister Margot’s wife, Eliza.
The nine-episode season – each episode follows a month of Eliza’s pregnancy — will premiere on Revry on Feb. 11.
“‘Unconventional’ comes at a time where stories about marginalized communities are more important than ever and ‘Unconventional’ is an unapologetically queer show,” Williamson said Thursday. “Unfortunately, LGBTQ representation has diminished considerably since ‘Eastsiders’ ended, and mainstream depictions often shy away from the complex realities of queer love. Revry is the perfect home for the series and I couldn’t be more excited about the acquisition.

In director and writer Marco Calvani’s “High Tide,” well-known Brazilian actor Marco Pigossi stars as Lourenco, an immigrant living in Provincetown, the iconic gay getaway in Massachusetts. Suddenly single with his visa about to expire, he meets and falls for Maurice (James Bland), a Black doctor from New York City who is on vacation before heading to Angola for a residency.
Turns out there was as much romance going on off-screen as there was on. Calvani and Pigossi fell in love after initially meeting to talk about possibly working together one day.
“I tell everyone there’s a love story behind the love story.” Pigossi tells me. “We were falling in love as he was finishing the script. He was always asking me things like, ‘What’s your favorite poem in Brazil? What would be like a very conservative city in the countryside?’ I didn’t know what he was writing.

The next film from an Oscar-winning Spider-Man star and a major player in The Boys spin-off Gen V just received an exciting release update. Can television have its own New Hollywood moment?
Much like movies such as Bonnie and Clyde, The Graduate, Rosemary’s Baby and Easy Rider took the late 1960s by storm, a group of writers and directors are hoping that their own independent TV projects can break through and find their way to the small screen amidst the current Hollywood contraction.
After a number of web series such as Issa Rae’s The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl, Broad City and High Maintenance were turned into TV series over the past decade, writers and directors hoped that this would lead to more.
However, the rise of streaming originals saw the business go the other way, with incredibly expensive dramas and comedies, often led by movie stars, taking over. This trend is now waning and a new generation of creators hopes that cost-conscious companies will now pay more attention to their projects instead.

A haunting lead performance from Marco Pigossi, steeped in melancholy and raw pain but also in moments of openness, optimism and even joy, helps make High Tide an affecting portrait of untethered gay men seeking meaningful connections. Writer-director Marco Calvani’s sensitively observed first feature draws parallels between the isolation of an undocumented Brazilian, nearing the end of his visa and disinclined to return home, and that of a Black American, secure in his tight friendship circle but very much aware he’s the minority in a predominantly white queer tourist mecca — and in the country at large.
About that setting — for anyone who loves Provincetown, this film and its enveloping sense of place will evoke fond associations with the historic fishing village and art colony on the tip of Cape Cod.

Editor’s Note: This review was originally published during SXSW 2024. Strand Releasing and Ld Entertainment release “High Tide” in select theaters October 18.
The main draw on the surface of writer-director Marco Calvani’s lovely if overly dramatic feature debut is the jaw-dislocating physical beauty of its star. That might sound crass, but “High Tide” is a movie that dares you not to be obsessed with — and attracted to — its leading man. Actor Marco Pigossi, Calvani’s real-life partners, enters the first frame as if sculpted out of marble, or butter even, stripping down to nothing and rushing into the sea off a desolate nude beach along Provincetown, Massachusetts, in a spin of anguish.
The cold open is a bookend “High Tide” will return to at its climax. It’s also a chilly plunge into a baptismal, hoped-for catharsis for Lourenço (Pigossi), a Brazilian immigrant with an expiring tourist visa reeling...

How is Tiffany (Amanda Seales) doing with life in Denver? Is Molly (Yvonne Orji) going to get her happily-ever-after with Taurean (Leonard Robinson)? What happens with Kelli (Natasha Rothwell)? When Daniel Craig signed on as James Bond in 2005, he found himself under attack by snipers more vicious than any 007 had ever faced: the media.
The naysayers immediately lamented the “blond Bond” and criticized his blue eyes. The London Daily Mirror on Oct. 15, 2005, ran his photo with the headline “The Name’s Bland … James Bland.”
Two days later, the Mirror interviewed a man actually named James Bland. He had a statement for Craig: “I’d make a better Bond than you.” Bland added, “He must be the most boring 007 ever.” This was nearly three months before filming had begun.
At Craig’s first meeting with the press, he arrived via a speedboat on the Thames; he was wearing a lifejacket, which led to endless media mockery. Reporters were even more appalled that he chewed gum during the press conference.
Websites immediately sprang up with names like DanielCraigIsNotBond .com, CraigNotBond .com and blondNotBond.

Community alum Yvette Nicole Brown is in production on Always a Bridesmaid, an indie film she wrote, marking her screenwriting debut. She is also serving as an executive producer on the project. It follows Corina James who has been a bridesmaid so many times that she is starting to wonder if she will ever be a bride. Always A Bridesmaid ponders the question, ‘Is love and marriage for everyone?’ And if so, how do you get over your own stuff in order to find and keep your one?
Javicia Leslie (God Friended Me) and Jordan Calloway star in the film. Brown will play a supporting role along with Marcel Spears (The Neighborhood), Brandon Michael Hall (God Friended Me), Affion Crockett (The Wedding Ringer), Michelle Mitchenor (Lethal Weapon), Bernard David Jones...

The Daytime Emmy Awards cover a wide variety of programming including soap operas, talk shows, game shows, children’s shows, animation and more. In recent years the awards have also expanded into the online streaming realm, just like their primetime counterparts, so digital drama series and programs from Netflix and Amazon are also represented.
The awards for dramatic acting are unique as they undergo an extra pre-nominations phase of voting. TV academy members watched short sample clips of all entrants for lead and supporting awards. The top 10 vote-getters in each category became the pre-nominees,...

One of the best drama series of 2017, James Bland's Giants, kicked off Season 2 today with a fantastic new episode.
When Journee's (Vanessa Baden Kelly) mental illness becomes too much for her sister (guest star Alesha Reneé, The Rich and the Ruthless), she is forced to crash with her best friend Malachi (Bland), a sex worker, who has already over-stayed his welcome with Ade (Sean Samuels) — his closeted gay buddy who is secretly in love with him. Can the three of them coexist in a tiny one bedroom apartment while facing their individual crises?
Giants was recently nominated for six Indie Series Awards, and Season 2 looks to be even bigger and better. If you're looking for a new continuing drama to invest in, Giants could be the show for you. Watch the premiere below.

Sam Smith's highly-anticipated James Bond theme 'Writing's on the Wall' received its world premiere this morning (September 25), and as with all themes scored for the iconic franchise, it got its fair share of love and hate.
Twitter reacted as Smith's emotional lyrics played out over a traditional Bond-style orchestra of strings, but not everybody was impressed.
Sam Smith's Bond theme first listen review: Spectre track is too emotional for 007
22 best and worst Bond theme songs ranked: Every single's here, but which are classics and which need their 00 status revoked?
Dear Sam Mendes, you still have a month. @LanaDelRey popped her phone number on her latest album, for the love of #Bond, please ring it.

It took Sam Smith 20 mins to write the new #Bond theme for #Spectre?
It shows.

“James Blond!” screamed the press when Daniel Craig was cast as everyone’s favourite super spy, while the internet went into the sort of obsessive lockdown typically reserved for the casting of Batman. The Daily Mirror, in a bid to be a bit different, went with the more cutting “The Name’s Bland – James Bland”, but the message was clear – this man isn’t James Bond.
What a difference a decade makes. Craig has not only gone on the star in two of the franchise’s best movies (and admittedly one of its worst, although how good could a movie called Quantum Of Solace really be?), but is regularly stated as one of the all time bests, second only to perhaps Sean Connery (and he’s given the original a real run for his money). Raw, dark and brutal, but still possessing that charm and swagger that makes Bond so alluring,...
