The relations between Taiwan and China, and the way they impact the citizens of the two countries, have repeatedly been themes explored in Sinophone cinema, usually through dramatic approaches. Yang Chunchun, a 28-year-old manga artist disillusioned by men and struggling with poor book sales, is reluctantly drawn into her estranged father’s past when he dies during a nostalgic trip to his childhood village in Shanxi province. Left with a photo and an unresolved love story from 60 years ago, Chunchun sets out to find the woman her father left behind, Zhang Xiuqian, his first love from whom he was separated when he fled to Taiwan in the late 1940s.
