Was homeless at the age of sixteen after moving out of her mother's apartment.

She was in a near-fatal car accident when she was seventeen. She suffered a collapsed lung, was in a coma for 72 hours and woke up from sedation two weeks later, had to have brain surgery (she was not supposed to make it out of surgery alive). She had a 7-month-long recovery and had to re-learn how to walk and talk. She said this near-fatal car accident changed her life forever - and led her to attempt suicide multiple times.

She was working as a model and waitress at the New York restaurant Lavo when cast in ''Orange Is The New Black (2013)'' and even kept her waitress job while filming before the long hours of filming led to her being fired.

Was born in New York City and raised there and Los Angeles.

She attended Alexander Hamilton High School in Los Angeles.
