‘Sunfish (& Other Stories on Green Lake)’ Trailer: One of Sundance’s Recent True Discoveries Is Coming to a Theater Near You
Image
For her first feature film, filmmaker Sierra Falconer opted to combine both something comfortable and something a little more bold.

The result is “Sunfish (& Other Stories on Green Lake),” the rare anthology film that not only earns its structure, but uses it to wonderful effect. As our David Ehrlich wrote of the film when it premiered at Sundance this year, “Where most anthologies spotlight each of their stories with the mono-focus of a slide projector, Falconer’s attention drifts with the warm indifference of a roving sunbeam. Her characters don’t really overlap in any literal respect, but they’re so bound together by a shared sense of place — and by the emergent realization that they’re all just passing through it — that it feels like they’re all neatly interwoven together, especially when they struggle to connect with each other.”

After its Sundance debut, the film was picked up...

‘Sunfish and Other Stories on Green Lake’ Review: A Relaxing Omnibus Movie Dips Its Toe in a Small-Town Michigan Summer
Image
A 14-year-old is obliged to stay at her grandparents’ lake home after her impulsive mom elopes and prioritizes her new husband. At the competitive music camp across the water, a determined young violinist pushes himself to be named first chair, sacrificing the personal connections he covets more. Meanwhile, at the local bar, a fisherman finds an unlikely ally in catching the whopper that’ll change his life. And finally, at a family-run bed-and-breakfast, two sisters make the most of their summer before the older one heads off to college.

The location, rather than the characters or their independent narrative strands, serves to unify the four sketches that comprise “Sunfish and Other Stories on Green Lake.” Set in writer-director Sierra Falconer’s old stomping grounds — among the cozy, neighborly community that surrounds a scenic lake in northern Michigan — the pleasantly laconic anthology film debuted in U.S. dramatic competition at Sundance.

‘Sunfish (& Other Stories on Green Lake)’ Review: A Gentle and Rewarding Debut Sails Around the Frustrations of Most Anthology Films
Image
The great frustration with anthology films — and the reason I sink a little deeper into my seat every time I sit down to watch a new one — is that even the best of them tend to be wildly uneven, the whole seldom greater than the sum of a few select parts. Enter: Sierra Falconer’s light and languid “Sunfish (& Other Stories on Green Lake),” a collection of wistfully effervescent vignettes that resists the usual highs and lows of its format by drawing a gentle power from the stillness of the water that runs through it.

Indeed, the four short episodes that form this affecting debut flow together so fluidly, the camera passing its focus between them like a baton, that it might have been hard to know where one ends and the next begins if not for the title cards that “Sunfish” includes for context. Where most anthologies spotlight each...

Hells Kitchen: Which Chefs Have Tragically Passed Away?
Image
This article contains discussion of suicide.

Hells Kitchen is a reality TV cornerstone, but some cast members have tragically passed away after starring in one of the best reality TV shows. Gordon Ramsay's iconic series is gearing up for season 24. While viewers tune into Hell's Kitchen to get a good dose of the incomparable Ramsay, the contestants make the show at the end of the day. Unfortunately, not all the past chefs are alive today. There have been numerous chefs who have passed away since their time on Hell's Kitchen.

Past contestants have gone on to make their mark for various reasons, and some Hell's Kitchen seasons are better than others. Plenty of glorious success stories, like Rock Harper and Christina Wilson, who won season 10, live on in the minds of the fans. Additionally, Hell's Kitchen boasts Jason Santos, season 7's runner-up, who opened four successful Boston-area restaurants and...

12 Best Romance Movies Of The 2010s
Image
Romance movies have enduring popularity because they allow audiences to experience a range of emotions and escape from reality. The 2010s saw the release of many memorable romance films, from indie gems like Blue Jay to blockbusters like Crazy Rich Asians. These films explore various themes of love, including rekindling old flames, long-distance relationships, and the complexities of marriage, all while celebrating diversity and breaking stereotypes.

A romantic film will never go out of fashion, and the decade of the 2010s, in particular, had some great romance movies with epic love stories that last. Escaping from reality to get swept up in a good love story is a time-honored tradition, and plenty of audiences still yearn to see poignant romances on screens both big and small. A good romance will make a viewer want to fall in love when it goes right and cry their heart out when it goes wrong.

Fear the Walking Dead Didn't Actually Introduce a Cure
Image
The following contains spoilers for Fear the Walking Dead Season 8, Episode 3, "Odessa," which premiered May 28 on AMC.

Fear the Walking Dead Season 7 made a point of slimming its oversized cast, which has allowed for a more-narrowed focus to start Season 8, but it also made room for a few new faces. Morgan's daughter, Mo, was center stage in the premiere; Finch was introduced in "Blue Jay," and Dove learned that her real name was Odessa in the latest episode. As Judith Grimes did for The Walking Dead, those newer characters are poised to make a huge difference in Ftwd's final season.

Some fans believed that Finch was set to take on a major role in finding the cure to walker bites. While that's not exactly the case, there's still a chance that a cure will come eventually -- thanks to "Odessa" subtly mentioning Twd's biggest Rick Grimes theory. Here's everything we know about Ftwd's potential cure,...

What Happened to Alicia Clark in Fear the Walking Dead?
Image
The following contains spoilers for Fear the Walking Dead Season 8, Episode 3, "Odessa," which premiered Sunday, May 28 on AMC.

After most of Season 7 moved at a snail's pace, Fear the Walking Dead's Season 8 quickly jumped into the action. The premiere explained the series' time jump and how Morgan had returned his daughter to Padre. "Blue Jay" showed how June had joined and later deserted Padre. However, the episode pulled her back into the fold with a horrifying scene that pushed The Walking Dead's franchise's limits.

"Odessa" continued that fast-moving pace and actually revealed Padre's shocking identity. Along the way, it made a point of referencing some of the series' older characters. Charlie and Luciana were mentioned in "Odessa" and appeared to be dead, though it's possible that they could be alive somewhere. More importantly, the episode mentioned Alicia on two separate occasions. That had fans wondering if there was still a...

Fear The Walking Dead Theory: Padre Could Be Troy Otto from Season 3
Image
The following contains spoilers for Fear the Walking Dead Season 8, Episode 2, "Blue Jay," which premiered Sunday, May 21 on AMC.

After an abysmal Season 7, Fear the Walking Dead implemented a time jump during its Season 8 premiere. The time jump didn't fix all Ftwd's issues because there were still too many things happening off-camera, and the plot armor was still too thick. However, the time jump did offer the series a little bit of a storytelling reset. "Remember What They Took From You" showed that Padre was still the big-bad, but during the past seven years, everything had changed.

The premiere really didn't answer a lot of questions. For some reason, Morgan believed that Padre could protect his daughter better than he could. So, he returned Mo to Padre's island and joined on as a Child Collector. In fact, except for a missing Victor Strand, everyone in Morgan's group joined Padre. "Blue Jay...

For the first time ever, “Hell’s Kitchen” has left its longtime home in Hollywood to film its 19th season in Las Vegas. ‘Hell’s Kitchen’: Michelle Tribble deserved to win All Star season 17, say 50% of readers
Gordon Ramsay
Gordon Ramsay made history when he chose Michelle Tribble as the winner of “Hell’s Kitchen” on Feb. 2. At 24, she is the youngest woman to take the title since Holli Ulgade in season 7 back in 2010. Danny Veltri remains the youngest-ever champ; he was just 23 when he won season 5 in 2009.

We asked if you thought that Tribble deserved to win over rival finalists Nick Peters Bond and Benjamin Knack and a whopping 50% of you said she did. If you haven’t voted in the poll yet, be sure to do so at the bottom of this post and then sound off in the comments section.

Our exclusive odds had predicted that Bond would win and get to be the executive chef of the new Hell’s Kitchen restaurant at the Caesars Palace casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. That job comes with a jaw-dropping salary of $250,000.

‘Hell’s Kitchen All Stars’ finale: Did the right chef win or was one of the other finalists robbed? [Poll]
