The film possesses a winsome awkwardness that’s hard to resist, drawing you in with its enchanting quirkiness.

Boys Go to Jupiter, an animated feature directed and written by Pittsburgh-based 3D artist Julian Glander, is truly a product of its time. And that time is now. As the press notes mention: “[The film] was self-produced and animated entirely over 90 days on the free open-source 3D modeling program Blender. Peisin Yang Lazo executive produced.” Running about 85 minutes and featuring an impossibly stellar voice cast, this film is often funny and sometimes introspective about this land of screens we find ourselves trapped inside. A bit long in the tooth at times, it is undeniably engaging and reliably weird.

Billy 5000 (Jack Corbett) is a teenager living in Florida and determined to gig work his way to five-thousand dollars. His main gig is delivering food for the DoorDash-like company Grubster (“Have a Grubby Day!”). He hangs out with his friends around an empty swimming pool and at local chain restaurants surrounded by empty construction spaces.

Julian Glander is a 3D artist whose work ranges from children’s books to video games, and the influence of the former on his feature-length directorial debut, Boys Go to Jupiter, is especially evident in the film’s isometric vision of the world. In the right light, his simple, rounded characters could pass for clay figures. Glander isn’t exactly emulating stop-motion, but the characters’ minute movements evoke it all the same, bringing a hand-crafted quality to a medium that’s typically viewed as impersonal. Every cut to a distant camera perspective asks us to ruminate over every detail that’s gone into composing the film’s scenes.

The theatrical trailer for the new indie animated film “Boys Go to Jupiter,” which will hit select theaters in New York City on August 8 and Los Angeles on August 15, has been released. After those initial screenings, it will expand into a limited release nationwide. The movie will be distributed by Cartuna and Irony Point, which picked up the project in May after a successful festival run.

Cartuna and Irony Point have acquired the North American distribution rights to Julian Glander’s feature debut, “Boys Go to Jupiter.” The animated feature bowed at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival.

Cartuna and Irony Point plan to release the film theatrically, kicking off Aug. 8 at New Your City’s IFC Center, followed by an Aug. 15 bow at the Laemmle Glendale in Los Angeles and rollout nationally.

Glander’s “Boys Go to Jupiter” is described as a surreal coming-of-age story set in suburban Florida. The film follows Billy 5000, a teenage delivery driver who stumbles into a cosmic mystery after a routine gig leaves him caretaker of a mysterious alien egg.

The voice cast includes Janeane Garofalo, Julio Torres, Sarah Sherman, Cole Escola, Eva Victor, Elsie Fisher, Tavi Gevinson, Grace Kuhlenschmidt, Jack Corbett and Joe Pera.

The film was produced by Glander under his Pittsburgh-based studio, Glanderco, with Peisin Yang Lazo serving as executive producer.

Long before Fox's Animation Domination programming block on Sunday nights, there was Adult Swim, the mature audience-oriented block on Cartoon Network. Starting in 2001, Adult Swim initially ran later at night on the cable channel, featuring more risqué content than the daytime programming, at least in terms of humor and violence. Per Ringside News, Phil Brooks, also known as Cm Punk, has a role in the upcoming dark comedy film Let's Start a Cult. The film, set to be released on Oct. 25, has also been given an official poster highlighting its main cast. While Punk is not seen on the poster, "and Phil Brooks" can be seen at the end of the list of names, suggesting he'll have a special cameo. Exclusive: Boys Go to Jupiter, the debut feature film from acclaimed indie animator Julian Glander, has finalized its cast ahead of its Tribeca Film Festival premiere in June. Newly added to the lineup are Janeane Garofalo and Demi Adeyujigbe.

Ramirez, Eva Victor, and Max Wittert.

Boys Go to Jupiter is billed as a surreal animated coming-of-age story, brought to life in Glander’s trademark 3D visual style and sonic palette. The film follows a week in the life of a teenager in suburban Florida as he hustles his way through a series of bizarre gig economy errands.

It’s an interesting month on HBO and Max this March, as two acclaimed films hit the streamer along with some intriguing original programming.

First up in the movies arena is the streaming debut of Wonka, starring Timothée Chalamet. From beloved Paddington director Paul King, the film follows the adventures of a young Willy Wonka as he looks to become the world’s best (and weirdest) chocolatier. Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Elemental, the Pixar pic directed by Peter Sohn.

Launching with a world premiere as the closing-night film at May’s Cannes Film Festival, Elemental was penned by John Hoberg & Kat Likkel and Brenda Hseuh, based on a story by the writers and Sohn about a fantastical place called Element City, where Fire-, Water-, Earth- and Air-residents live together.

The plot follows the quick-witted and fiery Ember (Leah Lewis), a new arrival to the city whose friendship with go-with-the-flow Wade (Mamoudou Athie) challenges not only her beliefs about the world they live in, but the person she wants to be.

The idea germinated from Sohn’s own experiences; like Ember, he was a second-generation immigrant whose parents moved from Korea to New York City. That starting point helped to form the film’s themes of fitting in to a new place,...

Through its first six seasons, identifying who voiced one of the many aliens, critters, or goobers on Rick and Morty was a pretty easy thing to do. NBC has announced that Chloe Troast is joining the cast of “Saturday Night Live,” the only new comedian rounding out the show’s talent lineup for the coming year.

Troast will make her “SNL” debut on Oct. 14, when the show’s 49th season premieres. The episode will also feature host (and former cast member) Pete Davidson and a musical performance by Ice Spice.

The up-and-coming Troast will star alongside regulars Michael Che, Mikey Day, Chloe Fineman, Heidi Gardner, Bowen Yang and Kenan Thompson, among several others.

That follows Elemental‘s box office journey, which began inauspiciously with a record-worst opening for a Pixar movie, only for the film to have strong legs and ultimately earn $484 million globally.

According to Disney, Elemental had 26.4 million views — or, to put it another way, viewing time equivalent to that many complete showings of the movie — worldwide in its first five days of streaming. Like its competitor Netflix, Disney+ divides total viewing time by a title’s run time. For comparison’s sake, Disney touted last week that the live-action The Little Mermaid landed on the service with 16 million views in its first five days. The Disney and Pixar film “Elemental” had a strong start on Disney+, with the film pulling in 26.4 million views in its first five days of streaming availability.

Per Disney, that makes “Elemental” the most-watched movie premiere of the year on the service and among the top 10 movie premieres they have ever had. For context, Disney defines a view as total stream time divided by runtime, just like Netflix recently started doing. The film became available on Disney+ on Sept. 13. Disney also says “Elemental” has become the most viewed animated movie premiere since Disney and Pixar’s “Turning Red” was released in March 2022, as well as the most-viewed Disney+ movie premiere of all time in Latin America, just ahead of “Turning Red.”

By comparison, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” debuted with 1.625 billion minutes viewed in its first five days of availability on Disney+, which translates to approximately 10.8 million views.

The beloved animation studio Pixar has revealed a new look at their upcoming rom-com drama, Elemental, courtesy of a stunning 4Dx poster. This latest look at Elemental puts main characters Ember and Wade at its center, with the pair attempting to navigate their way around Element City, a metropolis inhabited by personifications of the four main elements, fire, water, earth, and air.

4Dx is arguably the best way to see Elemental, considering it gets viewers to viscerally experience the actual elements themselves. You can check out the new Elemental 4Dx poster below and learn more about the film and the format.

Elemental is all set to be led by Leah Lewis as Ember Lumen and Mamoudou Athie as Wade Ripple, with the duo of opposing elements growing closer as the story progresses as they slowly discover how much they actually have in common.

The 76th Cannes Film Festival announced this morning that its closing night film in, oh, just about five weeks will be Pixar’s latest innovative animated film, “Elemental.” The movie is directed by Peter Sohn, whose only other feature credit as director is 2015’s “The Good Dinosaur.” Sohn has been a part of Pixar, working in some capacity as an animator or story developer on most of their titles, going back to 2003. Job security at that shop!

“Elemental”’s premise is a forbidden love between anthropomorphic representations of Fire and Water in Element City. How this will make any kind of logical sense is beyond me, but have you seen how much money the “Cars” franchise has earned?
