Scream 7: Everything We Know About the New Sequel
Image
In 2022, Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media revived the Scream franchise with a new entry (the fifth) that was a box office hit, earning almost $139 million at the global box office. Fourteen months later, Scream VI came along – and became an even bigger hit, pulling in almost $169 million at the global box office, a number that was up there with the series’ heyday, when the first Scream and Scream 2 made just over $170 million. (Scream 3 also made over $160 million – only Scream 4 failed to crack $100 million.) So, of course, the companies are moving full steam ahead with Scream 7. While the movie seemed, initially, to be on the fast-track to success, the track it’s on has turned out to be a shockingly bumpy ride.

Melissa Barrera Fired

Melissa Barrera entered the franchise with the fifth Scream as a character named Samantha Carpenter, who turns out to have been the...

Scream 7 Writer Explains Movie's Major Story Changes After Cast Exits
Image
Kevin Williamson's Scream 7 is taking the titular slasher franchise in a different direction -- after several significant cast departures and creative changes that nearly derailed the movie. With the sequel back on track, screenwriter Guy Busick has revealed the time jump and story changes made so that Scream 7 could move on from the Carpenter sisters.

Speaking with ComicBook.com, Busick -- who wrote the last two Scream films following the franchise's soft reset -- addressed the creative shifts necessitated by the departures of stars Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, plus several directorial changes. He confirmed Scream 7 is set years after Scream VI and takes place away from the New York setting featured in the last two films.

“It’s not New York. I don’t want to be the one to spoil where it is," he said. "It’s an unspecified amount of time [after VI]. I might get contradicted by other people,...

“Here’s What the Universe Dealt Us”: ‘Scream 7’ Writer Reveals How the Movie Handles Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega’s Exits
Image
Fans might be wondering just how much change went into the original Scream 7 script compared to what we’ll see when the movie slashes onto theater screens next February. Well, according to the movie’s scribe, Guy Busick, the answer is everything. Busick, who also penned the fifth and sixth installments, recently sat down with ComicBook and revealed the original plans for the highly-anticipated film — and it sounds like it was made without the return of Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott in mind.

Revealing that after losing Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega (more on that in a moment), the creative team “had to start from scratch,” Busick said, “We weren’t able to use what we had in the previous iteration for this one.” According to the Abigail andFinal Destination Bloodlines writer,

“We were excited about what we had for that movie. We wanted to do one more ‘Core Four’ movie.

Long-Delayed 'Friday the 13th' Prequel Takes Another Stomp Forward With a 'Forever' Star
Image
It’s been three years since Crystal Lake, a Friday the 13th prequel series, was first announced, and now, the call sheet is beginning to be made public. William Catlett will return to the horror genre following his turn in Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett’s Universal monster flick, Abigail, in the role of Levon Brooks. As of right now, we don’t know how Levon fits into the story, but we know that Catlett will appear opposite Linda Cardellini (Dead to Me), who will lead the cast as Pamela Vorhees. The series is set to follow the days of Vorhees’ life before the scream-worthy events of Sean S. Cunningham’s 1980 film, Friday the 13th, went down.

Along with Abigail, Catlett has recently appeared in feature-length titles, including Alexandre Aja’s survival horror flick Never Let Go and the A.V. Rockwell-helmed drama, A Thousand and One. On the small screen,...

'Ready or Not 2' Producer Teases Horror Sequel Status: "It's So Early"
Image
Ready or Not, the horror comedy released in 2019, was a surprisingly successful piece that proved the genre could still be effective without relying on a major franchise or familiar IP. Its hilarious conclusion left things open, and after a strong box office performance, talks about a sequel began. Ready or Not: Here I Come was eventually announced, but six years have already passed since we saw Samara Weaving kicking butt in a huge mansion.

Repeating the same success of the original will be a challenge–especially since a few years have passed. However, producer James Vanderbilt is confident that not rushing things will work out for the best: "We were really hard on ourselves on not just repeating what the first movie was."

Vanderbilt spoke to Comic Book during the promotion of his latest movie, Guy Ritchie's Fountain of Youth. The veteran screenwriter behind 2022's Scream and Scream VI also...

“The Right Amount of Worldbuilding”: ‘Ready or Not: Here I Come’ Producer Reveals the Sequel’s Storyline
Image
Whether you’re ready or not, Ready or Not: Here I Come is on the way — and let us tell you that as huge fans of the first movie, we’re more than ready. The star-studded cast has been announced, and the beginning pieces are falling together for what will undoubtedly be another extraordinary horror-comedy project to come from Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known collectively as Radio Silence. The biggest missing bit of information that we have yet to receive is an update surrounding the storyline, which will be penned by returning writers Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy. Thankfully, producer James Vanderbilt recently teased what awaited audiences when the follow-up installment eventually explodes into cinemas.

As fans will know, the end of the sequel’s predecessor, Ready or Not, saw Samara Weaving in a last-woman-standing situation after she survived the night and outlived her pursuers, aka her newly sanctioned in-laws.

'100% Cancel Culture': Scream Legacy Star Condemns Melissa Barrera's Controversial Firing
Image
Though Scream 7 is closer to its anticipated release after being knee-deep into production, the fallout from the firing of Melissa Barrera still lingers over the titular slasher franchise. One of Scream's legacy stars is the latest to voice his displeasure with the handling of Barrera's exit, chalking up the decision to "100%...cancel culture."

Speaking with Fox News Digital, Kennedy expressed his anger with Barrera's 2023 firing from the Scream film series after her social media posts about the Israel-Hamas conflict. Kennedy, who portrayed Sidney Prescott's (Neve Campbell) admirer, Randy Meeks, in the first two Scream movies, echoed previous sentiments that firing Barrera from Scream 7 was a bad move, believing she was harshly judged for speaking up on a significant social issue.

“She should have never been fired. She has her beliefs, Ok? She’s allowed to have her beliefs. Other people on set have other beliefs. This is,...

“I’d Do Anything for the Fans”: David Arquette Reveals Why He Returned For ‘Scream 7’ [Exclusive]
Image
By the time David Arquette appeared in Wes Craven’s 1996 franchise-starting film, Scream, he had already collected quite a list of credits. Titles like Fran Rubel Kuzui’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Michael Lehmann’s Airheads began planting the seeds, but his appearance in the slasher flick watered his career into a full blossom. Since then, the actor has gone on to enjoy a fruitful run filled with genre-crossing performances and even a dip into the wild world of professional wrestling. Through it all, Scream remained a constant in his life, with Arquette reprising his role as the bumbling and naive, but lovable and brave Dewey Riley through the fifth installment.

It was in Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin’s Scream, that the heartbeat of the franchise lost his when Dewey was cut down by Ghostface’s blade. As devastating as it was, the tragic moment simply had to...

‘Ready or Not 2’: Release Date, Cast, Plot, and All You Need to Know
Image
When Ready or Not 2 was officially announced, fans of the cult hit instantly knew that we’re in for another wild, bloody ride. When the first one dropped in 2019, nobody expected a blood-soaked game of hide-and-seek to become one of the most entertaining horror-comedies of the decade. But thanks to its razor-sharp humor, wild twists, and a badass bride in a torn wedding dress, the film became an instant cult favorite.

Samara Weaving’s Grace gave us the perfect mix of final girl grit and “I’m-so-done-with-this-family” energy, and audiences were obsessed. Set against the gothic grandeur of the Le Domas estate, the story followed newlywed Grace as she discovered her new in-laws weren’t just rich and weird — they were rich, weird, and deadly, bound by a creepy family ritual that required her demise by dawn. Casual, right?

Fast-forward to 2025, and Ready or Not is back for round two,...

I Know What You Did Last Summer Trailer Brings Back Original Slasher Survivors
Image
When the "Scream" franchise was successfully restarted in 2022 by the directing team of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, fans of 1990s slasher flicks immediately began clamoring for a third trip to the "I Know What You Did Last Summer" universe -- at which point they were reminded of the direct-to-dvd "I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer" from 2006, and realized this would actually be the fourth entry in the property.

If you're now scrambling to catch up with this third sequel that you either skipped or plain didn't know about prior to reading the last paragraph, a word of advice: don't bother. It's set in a different town and introduces a whole new group of characters who get stalked and offed by the hook-wielding Fisherman. Also, it's awful. Because of that, I sincerely doubt it will receive more than possibly a jokey reference in the forthcoming "I Know What You Did Last Summer,...

David Cronenberg Reflects on Changing Cinema Habits, Joins Ready or Not Sequel Cast
David Cronenberg
David Cronenberg has shared his current view on the movie theater experience, describing it as less appealing than it once was. At the same time, he’s expanding his creative participation in genre film—this time not behind the camera, but on screen—by joining the cast of Ready or Not: Here I Come, the upcoming sequel to the 2019 horror-thriller Ready or Not.

Speaking with filmmaker Jim Jarmusch in Interview Magazine, Cronenberg addressed several aspects of watching films today. He noted that he rarely attends public screenings. “I stopped going to the cinema many years ago,” he said. “I only see movies in real theaters every once in a while, mostly at film festivals, and I’ve found that the projection isn’t always so great.”

Cronenberg said he watches everything with subtitles and mentioned practical inconveniences such as parking in Toronto. But his reaction extended beyond logistics. “I don...

Six years ago, genre regular Samara Weaving starred in a very cool horror comedy called Ready or Not, which was directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who went on to make the two most recent Scream sequels and the “Dracula’s daughter” movie Abigail. Now, The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that they’re being joined in the cast by...

Drop Director Christopher Landon Left Scream 7, But Still Found Room To Homage A Horror Legend
Image
When Christopher Landon was announced as taking over the directorial reigns of the "Scream" franchise from Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gilpin of Radio Silence, it felt like the perfect passing of the torch to a person who was always meant to be at the helm of a Ghostface vs. Sidney Prescott showdown. "Some people don't know this, but one of the reasons why I was so excited to do 'Scream 7' was because I was an intern at the company that made the original 'Scream,'" he told me during an interview with Fangoria Magazine.

It was 1995, and Landon was tasked with reading a spec horror script from an at-the-time unknown writer named Kevin Williamson. It only took him a few pages of reading before he knew he had to convince his supervisor to buy it. Becoming the director of "Scream 7" was the kind of full circle career moment Hollywood loves,...

Christopher Landon Reflects on 'Scream 7' Exit
Image
It looks like it's honesty week when talking about Scream 7. Things kicked off with Jenna Ortega revealing that it wasn't scheduling conflicts or a pay dispute that led to her dropping out of the seventh installment, with the real reason being the issues surrounding Melissa Barrera's firing and not being able to make the film with the team she had become accustomed to. Now director Christopher Landon, who was set to helm the seventh entry, is revealing a bit about what happened when he had to exit the project and the end result says a lot about the negative side of the fandom.

During a chat with the Evolution of Horror Podcast, Landon was candid about his exit, and it's easy to see that how the experience turned out still affects him because he really wanted to do the film. However, despite how things turned out, he believes...

“It Was an Incredibly Painful and Difficult Situation”: Christopher Landon Explains His ‘Scream 7’ Exit
Image
Christopher Landon doesn't harbor ill-will towards Spyglass Media Group or any of the other folks involved with Scream 7. The Happy Death Day franchise director was on deck to helm the seventh installment of the beloved slasher franchise after Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett passed over the reins following Scream and Scream VI. Shortly after Landon’s position was announced, the production went off the rails, with the firing of Melissa Barrera following a pro-Palestinian social media post which we recently learned sparked Jenna Ortega’s exit. Then, just a little over one month later, Landon stepped down from the project, leaving a big question mark over its future. Eventually, universe creator and frequent scribe, Kevin Williamson, was brought on as director, with fan favorites such as Neve Campbell, Matthew Lillard, Courteney Cox and more set to return.

Recently, Landon sat down with The Evolution of Horror’s host, Mike Muncer,...

Netflix Is Slashing Horror Classics—Watch These Fan-Favorites Before They Vanish This Week!
Image
Netflix is in slashing mode and they are removing these horror classics!(Photo Credit –Netflix)

Netflix horror fans are in for a cruel twist this April. The clock is ticking, and some spine-chilling fan favorites are vanishing from the platform faster than you can say “Ghostface.”

At the top of the Netflix chopping block lies Scream (2022), a slick, blood-soaked reboot-meets-sequel that carved its way back into the genre with a vengeance but come April 11, it’s saying its final goodbye.

Horror Titles on the Chopping Block

Directed by Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, the minds behind Ready or Not and V/H/S, this modern Scream ushered in a fresh generation of scream queens and suspects, while still tipping the mask to the franchise’s origins.

And with Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega stepping into the blood-splattered shoes of sisters Sam and Tara Carpenter, it bridged the past and present, even as...

Jenna Ortega Opens Up About Her Exit From Scream & Clarifies It “Had Nothing To Do With Pay Or Scheduling… “
Image
Jenna Ortega Scream Exit(Photo Credit –Instagram)

Jenna Ortega is one of the most talented rising young actresses today. She has already proved her acting mettle in several projects, including Wednesday, Bettlejuice Bettlejuice, and more. The actress has already been in many iconic franchises, one of which was the slasher movie franchise, Scream. After Melissa Barrera, who played her onscreen sister, was fired from the next movie, Jenna also announced her abrupt exit.

Although, at that time, reports suggested Ortega left the franchise because of pay or scheduling conflicts, the actress has now refuted those rumors and talked about what made her decide to exit. In a recent conversation with The Cut, she opened up about it. Scroll ahead to read on.

Jenna Ortega revealed to The Cut that it “had nothing to do with pay or scheduling” and continued to explain what pushed her to make such a decision.

Scream 7 | Jenna Ortega confirms her exit from film was nothing to do with scheduling
Jenna Ortega at an event for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024)
Jenna Ortega was said to have left Scream 7 over scheduling issues. That, she confirms, was actually not the case at all.

There’s now a path forward for Scream 7, a movie that should have been relatively straightforward to put together following the success of its predecessors. However, after being expected to be in cinemas in 2024, Scream 7 in its original guise fairly quickly fell apart.

The catalyst was the firing of star Melissa Barrera over social media posts that were heavily critical of Israel. You can read more on that there.

Accusing Israel of genocide against Gaza was too much for Spyglass Entertainment, who issued a statement reading “we have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.”

Jenna Ortega then was said to have...

Jenna Ortega On Why She Dropped Out Of ‘Scream 7’ After Melissa Barrera’s Exit: “It Was All Kind Of Falling Apart”
Image
Jenna Ortega is revealing the real reason she left Scream 7 amid the fallout from Melissa Barrera’s firing from the franchise.

In a new interview, the Wednesday star opened up about what led to her exit from the film after her co-star Barrera was cut from the movie following her comments on the Israel-Hamas war.

“It had nothing to do with pay or scheduling,” Ortega said in an interview with The Cut. “The Melissa stuff was happening, and it was all kind of falling apart.”

When Ortega stepped down from reprising her role in the Scream franchise, directors Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin had also exited the project.

“If Scream VII wasn’t going to be with that team of directors and those people I fell in love with, then it didn’t seem like the right move for me in my career at the time,” she added.

Scream 7: Jenna Ortega bailed because sequel was falling apart; Matthew Lillard doesn’t want to mess it up
Image
Spyglass Media and Paramount Pictures once intended to make a Scream 7 that would have starred Scream (2022) and Scream VI leads Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega. We heard that Ortega exited the project after asking for a substantial pay raise – and as we saw when Neve Campbell dropped out of Scream VI due to a pay dispute, these pay issues don’t tend to work out. Then Barrera was fired from the project after comments she made about the Israel-Hamas war didn’t go over well with executives at Spyglass. But now Ortega has given an interview where she denied that a pay dispute had anything to do with her exit.

Speaking to The Cut, Ortega said she dropped out of Scream 7 because of the Melissa Barrera situation, and because the directors of Scream (2022) and Scream VI (Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett) were not coming back. Here’s the...

Jenna Ortega on Why She Really Left ‘Scream’ Franchise
Image
Jenna Ortega is addressing why she exited the Scream franchise amid the firing of her co-star Melissa Barrera.

In a cover story for The Cut published Monday, the Death of a Unicorn star reflected on leaving the rebooted Scream franchise, in which she and Barrera starred as the Carpenter sisters. After Spyglass Media Group announced in November 2023 that Barrera had been fired from the forthcoming seventh installment for remarks she made about the Israel-Hamas war on Instagram, it was also announced a day later that Ortega was departing the film as well. It was speculated her exit was due to either Barrera’s firing or pay disputes, however, Ortega explained why she decided not to return.

“It had nothing to do with pay or scheduling,” Ortega said. “The Melissa stuff was happening, and it was all kind of falling apart.”

Scream VI directors, Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, had also exited,...

Jenna Ortega: My Scream 7 Exit “Had nothing to do with pay or scheduling”
Image
Jenna Ortega made many headlines after leaving the Scream franchise despite enjoying success. She joined the movie series as Tara Carpenter in 2022’s Scream and became a popular character. However, following Scream VI, she denied her involvement in the seventh film, citing scheduling conflicts.

Now it is reported that Ortega’s exit from Scream 7 was not linked to any payment or scheduling issue. She did not have a good feeling about everything that was going on behind the scenes and decided to drop the project.

Scream 7 became a hot topic of discussion after Melissa Barrera was fired for her social media posts on the Hamas-Israel conflict. But the woes did not end as both Jenna Ortega and the director, Christopher Landon, also abandoned the movie.

Jenna Ortega Finally Reveals The Real Reason She Decided Not To Return For Scream 7
Image
Back in 2023, the news broke that Scream star Melissa Barrera would not be returning for the upcoming seventh instalment in the long-running slasher franchise after being fired from her role as Sam Carpenter for sharing what were deemed to be "anti-Semitic" comments on social media.

This followed the announcement that Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the duo known as Radio Silence, would not be back to helm the project after directing the previous two entries.

The studio received a lot of backlash for the Barrera situation, and there was speculation that some of her Scream cast-mates might show their support. Shortly after, we learned that Jenna Ortega, who plays Barrera's on-screen sister Tara, would not be reprising her role - although the trades claimed that her decision had nothing to do with Barrera's departure.

Ortega’s representatives reportedly informed Spyglass prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike that she would not be returning.
