(May 10, 2010) Merited a position in Time magazine's - The 100 Most Influential People in the World ("Leaders" category) - with an homage contributed by Hillary Clinton.

Elected to the House of Representatives as a Democrat from California, representing San Francisco, in a special election following the death of Representative Sala Burton, and has served June 2, 1987 - present.

Her father was Thomas D'Alesandro Jr., Baltimore's first Italian-American mayor. Her mother was Annunciata D'Alesandro. Her brother Thomas J. D'Alesandro III was also elected Mayor of Baltimore.

Achieved the highest political rank for a female in American history when she attained the position of 60th "Speaker of the United States House of Representatives" (4 January 2007).

She was honored by the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco, California for her efforts on behalf of the company in securing federal support for the rebuilding of the theater.
