On 22 December 1974, Brenda's parents were tragically killed in a car accident, meaning that Brenda and her brother Rodney were raised by her grandmother, aunts and uncles.

Began attending the local Pentecostal church at age 8, where she first began to realize her love of music by singing in the Sunday school junior choir. She later became choir mistress and also sang for the Church Of God In Christ mass choir.

She began working as a singer at local nightclubs and private parties, hoping to get spotted, at the age of 18.

Before making her big-break as one of the contestants on the live performances on The X Factor (2005), Brenda worked full-time in an Accounts office for 17 years in order to support her two children Jamal and Tanisha.
