In 1954, the U.S. Supreme Court issued its decision in Brown v. Board of Education which overturned Jim Crow racial segregation in the public schools. That mattered little in most of the country when white privilege was normalized, and white supremacy went unchallenged. Black people had no real say. Whites controlled most everything, as they still do to a great extent.

Since the 1950s black and brown people have been demanding their rights and as expected in a nation of so many different viewpoints there has been push back.

This time a distinction between the past is evident. It appears the soon to be the leader of the free world Donald Trump is now leading any pushback on racial resolutions. His actions over time and in particular the last few years support this.

We told you last month about the PBS special presentation Superheroes: A Never-Ending Battle that would be premiering in October, and tonight’s the night! Tuesday nights are pretty jam-packed for Our Kind of Viewing, but this one looks like it should get some priority.

We have a TV spot and the clip from the first hour to get you primed, and the press release is included again below so you’ll get the full details, including the info on the accompanying book and Blu-ray.

Here’s a quick scheduling note: After the initial broadcast the three hours are broken into three one-hour parts and have slightly different titles, though at least in my area they will still be aired one right after the other. So if you’re thinking of DVR-ing it, check the titles and time carefully so you don’t miss out on any of the three hours.

The circus tent of geekdom encompasses an infinite number of interests, but when the brainy geeks are also the superhero fan geeks, what do you get? This bit of wonderfulness: a PBS miniseries on superheroes entitled Superheroes: A Never-Ending Battle. Three episodes, all in one night, narrated by the excellent Liev Schreiber (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Salt). And just wait until you see the list of people involved.

Here are some of the things that Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, gets up to in the course of his new movie, The Amazing Spider-Man: he shuffles along the hallway of his school, mumbles, gets bullied, rides his skateboard, skips class, fails to finish his sentences, broods like James Dean over his parents, catches a cab, catches a subway, smashes an alarm clock, and has Branzino for dinner with his high-school crush Gwen Stacy.

Not that he doesn't get up to his usual tricks — swinging through the canyons of New York, saving kids from burning cars, and fighting off giant green lizards — but...

If you have read any of my rants before then you know that I am a dedicated Avengers fanatic. Add to that my predilection for Buffy and you can probably imagine the giddy excitement and awkward skipping that occurred when I first heard that Joss Whedon was writing and directing the Avengers movie. Such a sight has never been seen before (according to my wife it should never been seen again, at least if I ever plan on seeing her naked).

Even though we are still months out from the Avengers big screen debut I don’t think that is too early to begin musing on the possible plots for the inevitable sequels. Sure the net is full of gossip and whispers about Dr Strange or Ant Man being involved, perhaps the Guardians Of The Galaxy, or there being an entirely new Avengers team introduced.

Taking over Nottingham’s city centre and laying on a roster of mostly free events over four days, the festival goes way beyond just playing games: previous events have included art exhibitions, director commentaries, playground building, live videogame recreations, gigs, three World Record achievements, arcade trails and club nights – and this year’s festival added into the mix film premieres, human games consoles, zombie pageants and “molecular gastronomy” dining experiences.

It'd be fair to say that the period between the mid-1980s and the early-2000s was not a particularly great time to be a fan of Hal Jordan.
