A new comedy from BoJack Horsemancreator Raphael Bob-Waksberg has started with a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes. Running from 2014 to 2020, for a total of 76 episodes, BoJack Horseman has a claim to being one of the funniest comedies of the streaming era, as well as one of the saddest.
Both a satire of Hollywood and a deeply personal character study of an anthropomorphic horse, the six-season series was a narrative magic trick that helped to define Netflix's early output. And although it drew darker as it went along, with Bob-Waksberg writing the beautifully brutal final BoJack episode, it always kept its humor. A new ten-episode animated dramedy from the same...

The miraculous thing about BoJack Horseman was how the animated Netflix comedy managed to place the darkest, most melancholy material right alongside bursts of pure, concentrated silliness. Yes, it was the story of a clinically depressed, alcoholic, perpetually disappointing washed-up celebrity (the titular horse-man). But it also had room for ridiculous characters like Vincent Adultman, three kids stacked under a trenchcoat who said things like, “I went to stock market today! I did a business!” One episode might feature BoJack going on an epic bender that results in the death...

It’s 2004, and Avi Schwooper (Ben Feldman) is flying home for his little brother’s bar mitzvah. Sitting next to him — on an era-appropriate plane with adequate legroom and extra seats filled by casually strewn bags and coats — is his girlfriend, Jen (Angelique Cabral), cradling a CD player in her lap, half-listening to Paul Simon’s “The Obvious Child” and half-listening to Avi explain why the song is so good.
“‘Sonny gets married and moves away’?,” Avi exclaims, quoting the lyrics. “He was just born! How did he– It’s because that’s time. One moment you’re young, you’re free. The next moment, Sonny gets married and moves away.”
It’s 2022, and Avi Schwooper is sitting in his car, alone. The brown, bouncy curls once atop his head have tumbled down above his ears, leaving just a few strays to crown his suddenly expansive forehead. Jen is nowhere to be seen,...

Television has long had a Jewish mother problem.
From The Goldbergs (Gertrude Berg’s medium-spanning landmark) to The Goldbergs (Adam F. Goldberg’s barely Jewish ABC hit), TV’s Jewish characters have too often seemed to emerge from the same mother — and I’m not talking about the mystical concept of the shekhinah, or the divine feminine.
Small-screen characterizations have too frequently leaned into one form of maternal representation for Jewish characters, a brash and clingy archetype fixated on marrying off their daughters, emasculating their sons and manipulating affections through occasionally grotesque culinary endeavors. These TV Jewish mothers are all played by Tovah Feldshuh or Susie Essman or Linda Lavin, or at least feel like they are. It’s not that this stock character is inherently bad, but I’ve seen more than a few otherwise admirable Jewish snapshots undone by an insufficiently explored version of it.

Raphael Bob-Waksberg, the creator of the darkly funny Netflix comedy BoJack Horseman, is back with another animated series. Instead of talking animals navigating the throes of Hollywood, his new show focuses on a more personal narrative that almost everyone can relate to: Family. Premiering Friday, August 22, Long Story Short follows the Schwooper family over time as they navigate the usual (and unusual) challenges of being a family in the 21st century (see the trailer below). Avi Schwooper (Ben Feldman) is the oldest of the three siblings, who often finds himself butting heads with his sister, Shira (Abbi Jacobson), and their younger, goofier brother Yoshi (Max Greenfield). The siblings deal with grief,...

“BoJack Horseman” creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg’s new animated series, “Long Story Short,” is unapologetically Jewish in the best and funniest possible ways.
Inspired by Bob-Waksberg’s own family, the show centers around Naomi Schwartz (Lisa Edelstein), Elliot Cooper (Paul Reiser) and their three kids: Avi (Ben Feldman), Shira (Abbi Jacobson) and Yoshi (Max Greenfield).
“I think the show in some ways is about Jewish joy, and I think a lot of Jews will enjoy having a place for the Jews, and I think a lot of anti-Semites might learn a thing or two,” Bob-Waksberg told me Monday at the show’s premiere at Netflix’s Tudum Theater in Hollywood.
While “Long Story Short” may be dropping on the streamer at a time when antisemitism is on the rise worldwide and the Israel-Hamas war continues to rage on, Bob-Waksberg recently told Vulture that such real-life crises are not addressed during...

Not every family is dysfunctional, but each one has its moments when they don't see eye-to-eye or get into sometimes silly arguments. That's certainly the case for the Schwooper family, the tight-knit unit at the center of BoJack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg's new adult animated series, Long Story Short. Set to premiere on August 22 on Netflix, the show steps away from the dark, comedic tale of a washed-up and problematic actor in Hollywood to explore a more personal story of three siblings and their parents set over many years as they grow and change. As part of Collider's Exclusive Preview event for upcoming television shows, we're delighted to share a new sneak peek at a scene that should be familiar to many viewers from their childhood — family game night.

Show renewals are hard to get nowadays. Several factors influence a series' chances of growth. Many networks and streamers look for high audience viewership, how much the show gains traction in the media, especially on social apps, the financial side (how costly it is to make the show), etc. Whatever doesn't yield a return on its investment gets the "doomed" canceled tag. Yet, there are times a show hears the sweet sounds of renewal, even before season 1 becomes available. Netflixjust made the rare decision to renew Raphael Matthew Bob-Waksberg's upcoming animated comedy, Long Story Short, weeks before its users can stream the debut season.

Broadcast television is in the middle of a major surge, especially over on CBS, where a bunch of United States viewers have been treated to hits like "Elsbeth" and the new version of "Matlock." Streaming has brought a wealth of choice, but the general cost of maintaining a bunch of subscriptions, and the relative ease of turning on the TV for predictable programming, has seen some people flocking back to the big four networks. In spite of this renewed interest in broadcast television from people who might have cut the cord last decade, CBS has been putting a bunch of shows out to pasture, and "The Neighborhood," starring Cedric the Entertainer and Max Greenfield, was one of the unlucky victims this year. If that wasn't bad enough, a planned spin-off for "The Neighborhood," focusing on the characters Marty and Malcolm, also got the boot recently.

We have officially passed the halfway point of the year, and while some super popular Netflix shows have already been released, the best and biggest are still yet to come. The summer has been heated up by the likes of Squid Game, The Waterfront, and Untamed, but a certain someone we all know and love is about to make sure we're not having too much fun in August 2025.
After almost three years since its massive debut, Wednesday returns with its highly anticipated second season. Wednesday Addams will put a screeching halt to all of our summer fun. Well, she'll at least try because we're going to have a blast with these new episodes, but we can't make any guarantees that we will be all dark and gloomy just like she is!

Raphael Bob-Waksberg has a new, dysfunctional family to introduce with the first teaser for his upcoming animated series Long Story Short. Set to premiere on August 22, the show is the latest passion project from the BoJack Horseman creator, following the lives of the three Schwooper siblings as they grow up, navigate their troubles together, and unpack their generational trauma. Viewers will watch them from childhood to adulthood, but as the footage shows, age doesn't necessarily make them any more mature. From family car trips to dinners and other little moments with each other, the ten-episode run promises to pack their lives with the signature blend of comedy and grounded drama that Bob-Waksberg is known for.
The teaser flashes between the Schwoopers as kids and adults, albeit all within the same confined space of the back of the family car. They get into the typical sibling bickering about taking up too...

Raphael Bob-Waksberg more or less reinvented adult animation when he created "BoJack Horseman." Sure, much like another adult animated show that debuted around the same time, "Rick and Morty," "BoJack" dabbled in absurdism and experimentation. But the thing that made Bob-Waksberg and Netflix's groundbreaking cartoon about a talking horse unique was the way it tackled drama. Where "Rick and Morty" would go on to influence a decade of irreverent comedy, nihilism and parody in animation, "BoJack Horseman" was a mature, nuanced dramedy that featured complex characters and difficult subject matter. On top of all that, it was a biting satire of the entertainment industry driven by an antihero protagonist as compelling as Walter White or Tony Soprano.
Thanks to its success, "BoJack Horseman" also wound up paving the way for more dramatic American adult animated shows -- a format that had previously been synonymous with "The Simpsons" and similar sitcoms for decades.

Raphael Bob-Waksberg, the man broadly credited with reinventing animation with his 6-season, three-time Emmy-nominated Netflix hit Bojack Horseman, is back with more family trauma, but no taking animals, in Long Story Short.
The new Netflix animated series, which Bob-Waksberg premiered at the Annecy international animation film festival on Thursday, follows the trials and tribulations, or as Bob-Waksberg puts it, the “small t traumas,” of the Schwoopers, a fairly ordinary Jewish family.
“On one hand, it is an animated family comedy like Bob’s Burgers or King of the Hill, that kind of show, we have two parents, three kids,” he said, speaking at Annecy ahead of the series’ world premiere. “But the way we’re telling stories is a little different, in that we’re traveling back and forth through time. Not by using a time machine, just in the way we’re telling stories. So in the first episode, we...

While CBS has unfortunately cancelled the second spin-off of The Neighborhood, which was to center on Malcolm (Sheaun McKinney) and Marty (Marcel Spears), Cedric the Entertainer comes bearing amazing news for die-hard fans of the brotherly duo. The series star confirmed via an interview with TV Line that the scrapped follow-up will be worked into Season 8 of The Neighborhood, meaning that the events of the Season 7 finale will not be ignored since it also served as the backdoor pilot for the spin-off.

And even without a spin-off, The Neighborhood team, who “love the idea that Malcolm has moved there,” still “wanted to [make] this transition and show the growth of the Fuse Box, which is why we have Marty going back and forth [from Pasadena to Venice].”

Fans of The Neighborhood were left disappointed when CBS confirmed that the popular sitcom would end with Season 8. Unfortunately, the proposed spinoff will not be moving forward either.
However, Cedric the Entertainer, who stars as Calvin Butler in the series, told TV Line that he wasn't too surprised by the news. "I do recognize that we're in a very difficult time as far as television goes," he said. "We were excited about doing this. We created the idea, and we intentionally tried to use an episode of The Neighborhood that we had in order to shoot it."
The actor went on to explain the state of television in 2025, saying that despite having an interesting premise, broadcast networks are simply "not doing a lot of pilots [anymore]. Einstein is a “drama centered on the brilliant but directionless great grandson of Albert Einstein (Matthew Gray Gubler), who works as a comfortably tenured professor until he runs into the law and is forced to help a local police detective solve cases.” Rosa Salazar also stars.
Dmv is a “workplace comedy that follows a former high school English teacher (Tim Meadows) turned grumpy driving test examiner.”
However, they have not picked up the planned The Neighborhood spinoff series, TV Line reports. The show was supposed to star Sheaun McKinney, Marcel Spears, Justin Long, Kara Royster, Angelique Cabral and Hunter King.
The Equalizer spinoff, starring Titus Welliver and Juani Feliz, was also scrapped.
