Was the 2nd overall pick in the 1999 NBA draft by the Vancouver Grizzlies, but never played a single game for them. Francis quickly demanded a trade because he did not want to play in Vancouver because it was too far away from his family in Maryland and too cold. In an 11-player deal, which was at the time the largest trade in NBA history, Francis was traded to the Houston Rockets.

Was voted an All-Star starter representing the Houston Rockets for the Western Conference in the 2002 NBA All-Star Game (2002), 2003 NBA All-Star Game (2003) and 2004 NBA All-Star Game (2004).

Lives in the Washington, DC area during the off-season.

On February 22nd, 2006, one day before the trade deadline, the Orlando Magic traded Francis to the New York Knicks in exchange for Penny Hardaway and Trevor Ariza.
