Anime Review: Ninja Kamui (2024) by Sung Hoo Park
Image
An interesting combination of creative forces, born from the collaboration between the USA, Korea, and Japan, is the origin of a noteworthy and engaging product like “Ninja Kamui.” Sung Hoo Park (“Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1” and “The God of High School”), besides being the skilled director of the series, is also the founder of E&h Productions, which remains the animation studio primarily involved in the production of the series. But one cannot forget the role of Joseph Chou, producer of the series and CEO of Sola Digital Arts, which is a division of the company Sola Entertainment based in Japan and the US and renowned for 3D scenes.

This first original animated series by E&h Productions will be remembered for long for its remarkable action scenes.

“Out of all my work it is my best project”: Samuel L. Jackson’s Only Anime Series Started Out With the Creator Doodling African-American Characters on Kleenex Boxes
Image
Anime’s cultural impact stretches far beyond Japan, but there are few cases in which the Western impact is clearly visible. Although many anime titles do have a European setting, the influence seems to be empty.

Afro Samurai | Studio Gonzo

This is not so in the case of the Afro-Samurai. Anime might take from Western influences, but this anime is a rare case where the elements that are predominantly rooted in Western culture actively shape the final product and inspire its creation.

Afro Samurai was Takashi Okazaki’s brainchild, and it actually started from simple doodle sketches of African-American characters on Kleenex boxes, being a culmination of his love for hip-hop, soul music, and other American media elements.

The evolution of Afro Samurai

What began as a passion project and a way to express himself eventually evolved into a dojinshi series (which means that it was a self-published work). The...

The Ronin returns in new Star Wars Visions comic
Image
The world of Star Wars comics is vast and ever-expanding. It seems like every new series brings something new to the larger Star Wars universe — even in instances where the characters, setting, and themes are familiar to readers.

This winter, the world of Star Wars Visions and one of its main players returns in comic form. Star Wars: Visions – Takashi Okazaki — by writer and artist Takashi Okazaki — will shed new light on both the origins of The Ronin and the infamous Sith.

According to StarWars.com, the first issue of the upcoming comic is part of an ongoing series from Marvel that “invites comics creators to put their own spin on the galaxy far, far away in the spirit of Lucasfilm’s animated anthology of the same name.” The series is set to kick off this November with Star Wars: Visions – Peach Momoko #1.

“The Ronin” wasn’t just the main character in “The Duel,...

20 Most Proficient Anime Swordsmen
Image
Anime swordsmen are always some of the most popular characters, as seeing someone who has gone through extensive training and practice to hone their skills and bring their techniques to perfection is not only impressive but also inspiring. Often wielding nothing but a sword, these characters can take on any challenge. No matter how intimidating their foes may seem, they rarely refuse a chance to practice.

Even in the realm of sword fighting, there are plenty of different fighting styles and techniques that can be employed. Some swordsmen may prefer to focus on quick and unexpected strikes, while others may wield oversized swords and overpower their enemies through raw strength. Whether they use a single sword or multiple, great swordsmen know how to adapt to any situation and overcome any obstacle. This list presents anime swordsmen not based on their raw destructive power but on their actual skills in wielding their weapon.

Blue Eye Samurai vs Afro Samurai: An Emmy Win Doesn’t Make the Netflix Show Better Than Samuel L. Jackson Series
Image
Blue Eye Samurai is Netflix’s 2023 animation series belonging to the samurai\ronin genre. Set in Japan’s Edo period, it follows the journey of a female warrior, Mizu, who has to hide her identity as a woman to take revenge.

While a huge audience liked Blue Eye Samurai, it becomes a bit mild when compared to other classic series like Afro Samurai. Both series are pleasurable to watch, but one of them is a trailblazer.

‘Star Wars Outlaws’ Looks Better Thanks to Afro Samurai’s Creator!

We’re not going to mince words here. Star Wars Outlaws is not looking good. However, if Ubisoft had used Takashi Okazaki’s style for the whole game, maybe we’d be more forgiving.

The creator of Afro Samurai created an admittedly great-looking Kay Vess, Nd-5, and Nix. Considering the controversy surrounding the upcoming game’s visuals, this is a nice departure.

Afro Samurai Resurrection's Ending, Explained
Image
Quick Links What Happened in Afro's Past? What Was Afro Samurai: Resurrection About? Could Afro Samurai: Resurrection Get a Sequel?

One of the most intriguing manga and anime properties ever has been Afro Samurai. It detailed the story of Afro, an orphan who was consumed by revenge after the death of his father, Rokutaro. In time, Afro turned into a weapon and tried to cut a bloody path to the people responsible for the man's murder.

However, Afro began losing his soul in this war the very thing Rokutaro didn't want him to do. Interestingly, the manga was tweaked after the initial anime to create Afro Samurai: Resurrection. This continued Afro's journey, but as he kept walking this bloody path, he made more monsters and caused a lot more collateral damage along the way.

When Batman Ninja was first released, it was something that Batman fans had not seen before. The anime movie not only provided a different culturological interpretation of the Caped Crusader, it also provided us with a uniquely interesting film that completely shifted the perspective on DC Comics’ most popular character. The movie was originally released to praise and now, six years after the original, 2018 release of Batman Ninja, it has been confirmed that a sequel would be made, continuing the story of the first movie. The sequel is officially going to be titled Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League and will continue the story of Batman Ninja.

At this moment, information about the project is scarce and we only have an official logo for the movie and some casting information. This is a relatively new announcement, so we have not received too much information yet, but this will certainly change in the future.

Star Wars Visions' Ronin vs Darth Maul Battle Is On a Mission to Blow Your Mind
Image
Warning! This post contains Spoilers for Star Wars: Visions - Takashi Okazaki #1

Ronin's new one-shot comic provides an epic non-linear tale with a lightsaber duel against a swordmaster resembling Darth Maul. The story reveals how B5 came to be with the Ronin, having belonged to this Maul-esque swordmaster first. Just like the original animated episode, this new Visions comic showcases classic samurai themes wrapped in Star Wars visuals, including this surprise nod to Darth Maul.

The Ronin from Star Wars Visions returns thanks to Marvel Comics, starring in a brand-new tale that pits him against a dynamic version of Darth Maul. Resembling feudal Japan and the classic Akira Kurosawa films that inspired George Lucas with Star Wars itself, the Star Wars Visions episode "The Duel" first introduced the former Sith known only as Ronin. However, the character has received multiple spin-off comics as well as a novel. Now, the...

Star Wars: Visions' 'The Duel' Needs a Spinoff to Expand Sith Lore
Image
For the Star Wars: Visions anthology series, each studio and creator is not tethered to the confines of Star Wars canon. Instead, they are given the freedom to reinterpret and explore the Star Wars franchise in new ways. Kamikaze Douga's "The Duel" is the premiere episode of Star Wars: Visions Season 1, which infuses stories of Jedi and Sith with Japanese history and folklore. At the end of the episode, the Ronin is also revealed to be a Sith himself, calling into question viewers' ideas about the perceived binary between the Jedi and Sith in a galaxy far, far away.

On its own, "The Duel" is an incredible short, but "The Duel" is also significant because of the works it has inspired. Star Wars: Visions #1 (by Takashi Okazaki and Joe Caramagna) and Emma Mieko Candon's Ronin: A Visions Novel expand the world of "The Duel" and further explore the short's lore.

Joker & Harley Quinn Get a Samurai Upgrade in Genius Cosplay
Image
The Joker and Harley Quinn have had various looks throughout the years, but now they can add “samurai” to the list thanks to a recent cosplay. A pair of cosplayers known as TheRealSamuraiJoker delivers on what they promise, as the classic Batman villains are brought back to feudal Japan.

Ever since the publication of Batman: Gotham by Gaslight in 1989 and the establishment of the “Elseworlds” line, DC Comics has often depicted its characters in different settings and time periods: Batman operates in 19th century Gotham City on the trail of Jack the Ripper. The Justice League saddle up in the Old West to become the Justice Riders. Superman is reinterpreted as the Frankenstein Monster in a take-off on Mary Shelley’s immortal classic. Until the line was phased out and replaced with DC's modern “Black Label” series of books, Elseworlds provided a way for comic book creators to tell storylines...

100 Word Hits – Comic Reviews #15

Welcome to the latest installment of our 100 Word Hits column, in association with comics retailer The Unreality Store, in which Matthew De Monti brings us short, sharp reviews of the latest books to hit comic stores over the past month or so!

Damn Them All #1 Written by Si Spurrier | Art by Charlie Adlard

The UK’s greatest occultist since Aleister Crowley, Alfie Hawthorne is dead. Luckily he passed his occult knowledge on to his niece Ellie. Which is just as well as there’s a gang war about to break out in London and 72 demons from the underworld are going to be in thick in the mix.

There’s shades of Hellblazer and a touch of Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels which makes this an utterly great read. If you had to choose a horror title for Adlard to follow up his epic work on The Walking Dead, this would definitely be it.

‘Star Wars: Visions’: How the Anime Anthology Expands the Franchise by Returning to its Japanese Roots
Image
“Star Wars: Visions,” the new nine-part anime anthology on Disney+, returns the franchise to its Japanese roots even more directly than “The Mandalorian” to expand the universe. What’s exciting is how the seven anime studios filter the franchise so comfortably through the prism of Japanese culture. That’s because George Lucas’ original vision for “Star Wars” was an imaginative fusion of Japanese cinema and sci-fi space opera.

“‘Star Wars’ has been so influenced by Japanese culture from Kurosawa films [‘The Hidden Fortress’] to jidaigeki [period samurai] films [from which the Jedi name is derived] to Zen Budhism and its impact on the Force,” said executive producer James Waugh of Lucasfilm. “We’ve been talking about doing [‘Star Wars’ anime] for a long time, but we couldn’t make it happen until the force of nature that’s Disney+.”

On “Visions,” Lucasfilm Animation partnered with Kanako Shirasaki and Justin Leach of Qubic Pictures. They approached the anime studios that they wished to collaborate with, and...
