Monster: The Ed Gein Story gets a Trailer showcasing Hunnam’s disturbing performance
Image
We received our first look at the poster last week and now, Netflix is giving us a look at the trailer for Monster: The Ed Gein Story. And this definitely seems to be leaning into the Psycho and Texas Chainsaw Massacre inspiration of Gein. Hunnam looks to be doing a great job in the role, though I can’t help but feel like these serial killer fetish shows are getting a bit out of hand. Hopefully this will be the last one for a while. Wait, they’ve already announced one for Lizzie Borden? Dammit.

Here’s the official logline: Serial killer. Grave robber. Psycho. In the frozen fields of 1950s rural Wisconsin,...

‘Monster: The Ed Gein Story’ Trailer: Charlie Hunnam Wears a Mask of Human Skin in Netflix and Ryan Murphy’s Serial Killer Show
Image
Lock your doors because Netflix’s latest serial killer is on the loose.

Charlie Hunnam stars as Ed Gein, a murderer known as “The Butcher of Plainfield” and “The Plainfield Ghoul,” in the third season of Netflix’s anthology series “Monster.” The show premieres on Oct. 3.

“The Ed Gein Story” logline reads: “Serial killer. Grave robber. Psycho. In the frozen fields of 1950s rural Wisconsin, a friendly, mild-mannered recluse named Eddie Gein lived quietly on a decaying farm – hiding a house of horrors so gruesome it would redefine the American nightmare. Driven by isolation, psychosis, and an all-consuming obsession with his mother, Gein’s perverse crimes birthed a new kind of monster that would haunt Hollywood for decades. From “Psycho “to “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” to “The Silence of the Lambs,” Gein’s macabre legacy gave birth to fictional monsters born in his image and ignited a cultural obsession with the criminally deviant.

Bowen Yang Defends Ben Platt Against Internet Trolls, Says Claims of Zionism ‘Were Bulls—t’
Image
Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers rose to defend Ben Platt on Wednesday as the performer — who went viral last week for his cover of Addison Rae’s “Diet Pepsi” at their Las Culturistas Culture Awards — has endured accusations of being zionist and continued scrutiny for being a “nepo baby.”

“The reasons he was I guess, like, ‘away’ or ‘down’ or narrativized in a certain fashion were bulls–t,” Yang said. “It’s like, I mean, the zionism s–t? No.”

“That wasn’t even a thing,” Rogers said.

“And then he came out and was very vocal about the opposite, so whatever,” Yang added.

Platt came up on Wednesday’s episode of “Las Culturistas” as Yang and Rogers recapped the fourth edition of their Las Culturistas Culture Awards, which aired on Bravo last week. The “Dear Evan Hansen” star sang a cover of Rae’s “Diet Pepsi,” which the hosts...

Charlie Hall Cast In Ryan Murphy’s ‘Monster’ Anthology Series About Ed Gein
Image
Exclusive: Charlie Hall has joined the recurring cast of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s upcoming new season of Netflix’s “Monster” anthology series, which centers on murderer and suspected serial killer Ed Gein, played by Charlie Hunnam.

Known as the Butcher of Plainfield or the Plainfield Ghoul, Gein confessed to murdering two women in the 1950s and also allegedly made trophies out of bodies and skin of corpses he exhumed from graveyards. He is suspected of having been responsible for the deaths of others, including his brother Henry, but the authorities were unable to connect him definitively to any of the cases.

Gein’s story inspired the Leatherface character in Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and largely inspired Robert Bloch’s novel Psycho, which was later adapted to film with Alfred Hitchcock directing. He...

Famous Birthdays can identify the next big creators. Pixability is passing that data on to advertisers.
Image
Even though advertisers are pouring money into YouTube, there’s still a lot of debate over the metrics that should be used to measure those campaigns. Famous Birthdays offers one notable rubric via its “velocity” data, and those figures are the subject of a new partnership. Famous Birthdays and Pixability have announced a pact that will integrate velocity numbers into the latter company’s Super Signal Aggregation (Ssa) technology.

Since its 2012 launch, Famous Birthdays has tracked the creator economy by measuring internal search traffic from a user base that now includes 25 million unique visitors per month. The frequency of specific searches informs Famous Birthdays’ velocity numbers and its rankings of trending creators. By relying on its homegrown statistics, the so-called “IMDb for creators” was one of the first companies to clock the rise of now-ubiquitous social media stars like Charli D’Amelio and Addison Rae.

Pixability, a longtime operator in the world of YouTube marketing,...

Comedians Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers opened their first televised Las Culturistas Culture Awards with a delirious, inch-perfect rendition of Lady Gaga’s “Abracadabra.”

Kesha’s ‘Period’: What critics are saying about the singer’s first independent album
Image
After releasing three albums to fulfill a recording contract with her accused abuser's label, Kesha has returned with Period, her first independently released album.

Critics have responded generally favorably to the latest from the two-time Grammy nominee, which seems to harken back to the messy-pop days of 2010s Kesha.

"It’s easy to root for Kesha, which makes listening to (Period.) — her first album as an independent artist, hence its July 4 release date — such a blast," writes Rolling Stone's Maura Johnston. "Bookended by pensive moments, (Period.) is a frisky pop record that delights in throwing things at the wall and seeing what sticks — while also getting a kick out of any mess that might result from a less-than-successful toss…. Kesha’s taste for pop experimentation is in full flower on (Period.)."

Similarly, Alexis Petridis of The Guardian found Kesha to be flourishing, surrounded by new collaborators who have allowed...

Ahead of 'Thanksgiving 2,' John Carver Gets a Tasty New Figure From Sideshow Collectibles
Image
The slasher genre has received a ton of scream-worthy hits lately. Whether it be legacy sequels like Scream VI or new original frights like Sick, horror fans have been eating well. On the adaptation side of the blood-soaked knife, Eli Roth finally released his feature-length version of Thanksgiving in 2023. The holiday slasher was a full meal of carnage and fun sub-genre whodunnit tropes. A sequel is coming soon, but before John Carver enacts his delicious revenge, Sideshow Collectibles has unleashed their new Thanksgiving figure.

A part of their ⅙ scale figure collection, their Thanksgiving feast is centered around the founder and masked killer of Plymouth, Massachusetts. This John Carver stands at 12-inches tall and is fully articulated. He’s also ready for a killing spree with a turkey dinner full of accessories. These include a pilgrim hat, two masks (a traditional and melted one), a turkey apron, a microphone headset, a pitchfork,...

How ‘The Wizard of Oz’ Is Finding a Whole New Sound at Sphere, With a Re-Recorded Orchestra, an Untouched Judy Garland, and Aural Design That Puts You in the Twister: ‘Hold Onto Your Dentures’
Image
“You’re in the tornado, man.”

That is Paul Freeman, the principal audio artist at Sphere Studios, talking, offering a plainspoken assurance to cinematic thrill-seekers about the enhanced version of 1939’s “The Wizard of Oz” that is coming to Las Vegas beginning Aug. 28. The immersive elements are designed to tickle all the senses, but Sphere’s sound maestro is focused on his department and has some promises to make about how being off to see —and hear— the Wizard in 2025 will not be akin to just putting an upgraded speaker system in the old jalopy.

There are so many questions to address, when it comes to this severe a reinvention of a classic. Even limiting them just to the aural, for now: How much of the orchestral score was re-recorded? Will Dorothy still sound like Dorothy, amid all the updates, or will Judy Garland now be lip-synching to Addison Rae?...

How will the Grammys tackle the TikTokers? Alex Warren and Addison Rae look to turn chart success into Best New Artist bids
Image
As of June 2025, the No. 1 song in both the U.S. and the U.K. is “Ordinary”, a hit penned by Alex Warren, an artist likely unknown to millennial and older audiences.

Meanwhile, the top debut on the Billboard 200 for the week of June 16 was Addison, by a buzzing singer you might’ve heard of, Addison Rae. If you are younger, you likely know both Warren and Rae very well, as they are some of the biggest influencers of the pre-covid-era TikTok, who are now experiencing parallel rises to music fame, both plausible contenders to win the Grammy for Best New Artist. But their rise to music stardom, while unique in its way, also responds to a bigger trend throughout this century: the primacy of social media.

Haim Put Their ‘Headphones On’ for Addison Rae, Janet Jackson Mashup in BBC Live Lounge
Image
Haim delivered a decade-spanning performance for their latest appearance in the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge. The trio selected Addison Rae’s single “Headphones On” for the cover portion of their mini-set, but echoed the song with a twist. With Danielle Haim at the helm, the group mixed Janet Jackson’s 1997 single “Got ‘Til It’s Gone” into the record, complete with its sample of Joni Mitchell’s “Big Yellow Taxi.”

Rae’s “You can’t fix what has already been broken/You just have to surrender to the moment...

The Best Albums of 2025 … So Far
Image
With artists like Charli Xcx, Beyoncé, and Billie Eilish setting the bar high early on in 2024, last year was one for the books. And 2025 is looking to keep up the pace, with FKA twigs’s sensuous—and, yes, sensual—Eusexua coming on strong just weeks into the new year, followed by a slew of albums that are, at turns, ambitious, introspective, and bold, from Jason Isbell’s deeply personal Foxes in the Snow to Japanese Breakfast’s pointedly titled For Melancholy Brunettes (& Sad Women).

Elsewhere, New York rapper Billy Woods and British noise rockers Benefits have painted grim portraits of the techno nightmare that society seems intent on spiraling further into. But that’s not to say there wasn’t joy or escape to be found in this year’s music landscape so far: TikToker turned pop singer Addison Rae’s self-titled debut has turned out to be an unexpected guiltless pleasure,...

Allison Williams Loves How a Particular ‘Girls’ Meme Took on New Life with the HBO Max Rebrand
Image
Marnie Michaels on “Girls” is one of the great characters of 21st century TV, and thankfully Gen Z has helped to boost the popularity of the vainglorious New Yorker played by Allison Williams even if initially the response to the character was that Williams actually was Marnie.

Williams followed up “Girls” with the extraordinary success of “Get Out” and then the Blumhouse campfest killer-doll movie “M3GAN.” But “Girls” is never far from her no matter what, and while doing press for “M3GAN 2.0” she told “Entertainment Tonight” how excited she is that one particular moment from the show has become even more of a meme of late.

No, not the moment Marnie unironically sings Kanye West’s “Stronger.” It’s a moment with a little more applicability to anyone who tries something bold and falls flat. The moment when Marnie said “Let’s make fun of the girl who took...

‘Waiting for Britney Spears’: Behind the Scenes of Her Infamous Summit With Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan
Image
Britney Spears is Gatsby, Daisy and the green light at the end of the dock in a probing new book that posits the long-troubled pop star as the modern-day Marilyn Monroe. Waiting for Britney Spears is a gonzo tale of fluorescent noir, in which she’s the femme fatale who’s relentlessly stalked by hordes of paparazzi, along with a reluctant, shambolic Britney beat reporter — who may or may not be an exact stand-in for the author.

“I’m calling it a hybrid memoir,” says its writer, Jeff Weiss, who really did spend a stint of his 20s incurring Ptsd on the front lines of the tabloid trenches at magazines like Ok! and Star. (In the book, the slightly fun-house-mirrored depictions are referred to as Hi! and Nova.) “My joke is that it’s my Slaughterhouse-Five,” he says. “My firebombing of Dresden was getting arrested on Brad Pitt’s property.
