Her ancestry is mainly English, with small amounts of German, Scottish and Scots-Irish/Northern Irish, and distant French and Welsh. She has also described herself as being of part Cherokee Native American ancestry. These Cherokee roots have not yet been substantiated.

Has a quote from William Shakespeare's "King Lear" tattooed on her right shoulder that reads: "We will all laugh at gilded butterflies.". Has a quote from Friedrich Nietzsche tattooed on her back that reads: "And those that were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music.". To prepare for her role as a possessed living-dead teenager in Jennifer's Body (2009), she dropped 15 lbs., bringing her weight down to a near-frail 97 lbs., and remained outside the sun for four months to keep her skin pale. Fox later said this is her favorite of her own movies.
