Exclusive: Here’s another new sales agency debuting in Cannes: First Slate International is on the Croisette with a slate of indie genre pics.

The L.A.-based sales agency, which has been financed through private investment, will look to champion independent cinema, offering worldwide sales representation, development and packing support for films and TV programs.

The slate includes the likes of Surviving Silence, Peripheral and Those Who Call, along with Lifetime movie Tempted By Love.

First Slate’s founder is Jarrett Furst, a producer on Vmi Worldwide’s recent EFM action-comedy Special Ops Rent-a-Cop. He is CEO, with Brooklen Bruce as Chief Operating Officer, horror genre actress Devanny Pinn as Executive Vice President, and Ryan Ellis as Head of Legal Affairs.

Ten years ago, writer/director Jason Krawczyk brought the world the horror comedy He Never Died, which introduced viewers to a badass immortal character named Jack (played by Henry Rollins), who had been around for thousands of years. The follow-ups planned for that film haven’t made it into production, but now, Krawczyk is back with the action comedy Don’t Mess with Grandma (which was filmed under the title Sunset Superman), starring Michael Jai White. María Gabriela De Faría, whose credits include Deadly Class and The Exorcism of God, plays a villain known as The Engineer, a member of The Authority, in director James Gunn’s Superman, which is set to reach theatres on July 11th, 2025. She’ll soon be wrapping up her work on that film – and Deadline reports that she has already signed on to her next project. De Faría is set to star in the serial killer film Romanticizing Monsters for director Berkley Brady (Dark Nature).

De Faría will be taking on the role of Amelia Velez, a reporter and true crime podcaster investigating a series of missing person cases linked to an active serial killer that her boss and the police don’t believe exists.

Romanticizing Monsters is being produced by Justin Kelly and Katisha Shaw.

Venezuelan actress María Gabriela de Faría will soon be up on the big screen in James Gunn’s Superman, and she’s also booked a role in upcoming thriller Romanticizing Monsters.

Deadline reports today that María Gabriela de Faría will be playing the lead role in serial killer thriller Romanticizing Monsters from director Berkley Brady (Dark Nature).

Deadline details in their exclusive report, “The film centers around De Faría’s character, Amelia Velez, a reporter and true crime podcaster investigating a series of missing person cases linked to an active serial killer that her boss and the police don’t believe exists.”

Exclusive: XYZ Films has acquired U.S. and Australia/Nz rights to distribute the TIFF sports drama Backspot, directed by first-time feature filmmaker D.W. Waterson and starring Devery Jacobs (Reservation Dogs) and Evan Rachel Wood (Westworld).

XYZ Films will release the film domestically and has set a theatrical release for spring of 2024.

The rights deal was negotiated by UTA Independent Film Group with James Emanuel Shapiro from XYZ Films.

In the film, an ambitious cheerleader (Jacobs) faces both new adversity and the increased drive for perfection and triumph when she and her girlfriend are selected for an all-star cheer squad with an overbearing head coach (Evan Rachel Wood).

Principal photography has kicked off on “Backspot,” the upcoming queer cheerleading film starring Devery Jacobs (“Reservation Dogs”) and newcomer Kudakwashe Rutendo as the leads. It will mark helmer D.W. Waterson (“That’s My DJ”) directorial feature debut. The film is expected to shoot until mid-March in the Toronto area.

The film hails from Elliot Page’s Page Boy Productions, Night is Y and Prospero Pictures, and was written by Joanne Sarazen, based on a story by Waterson.
