- Spent several years teaching at various boarding schools in New England.

- When the United States entered World War II he joined the OSS where he worked in counter intelligence.
- In 1940 after being turned down by the United States' Office of Naval Intelligence and the U.S. Army's G-2 intelligence service he offered his services to England's MI6's British Security Co-ordination based out of Rockefeller Center in New York.
