The new Paramount owned by Skydance has made it official that Stranger Things architects, the Duffer brothers and their Upside Down Pictures label, are officially coming over to the Melrose Ave lot in a wide-ranging four-year, exclusive deal for feature films, television, and streaming projects. We told you about the new big deal for the David Ellison led Paramount last week.

The big plus here for the Duffers is that they now get to make movies for the big screen.

Their new deal at Paramount starts at the end of their current deal with Netflix in April 2026. At the end of their Netflix deal, the Duffers will remain involved in Stranger Things and other existing projects in development at the Ott service.

Paramount has set the release of the upcoming horror film “Primate” for January 9, 2026 and has moved back Edgar Wright’s adaptation of “The Running Man” one week to November 14, 2025.

“Primate,” which will premiere at this year’s Fantastic Fest, is the first film to come from Paramount’s production deal with former DC Films head Walter Hamada. Directed by Johannes Roberts and starring Johnny Sequoyah “Coda” Oscar winner Troy Kotsur, the film follows a college student and her friends as they try to survive the wrath of a pet chimp who contracts rabies and turns aggressive.

“Primate” joins a January 2026 slate that includes Sony’s “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple” on January 16 and the Amazon MGM thriller “Mercy” on January 23.

Paramount Pictures has shared new updates about their movie lineup, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are right in the middle of it. During their recent announcements about upcoming projects, Paramount confirmed that a sequel to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is already set for release on September 17, 2027. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are returning as producers, and Jeff Rowe, Kyler Spears, and Yashar Kassai will direct. But for many fans, the bigger news is the live-action film that’s in the works, which appears to be an adaptation of The Last Ronin.

Refresh for updates… Hours after the Skydance-Paramount merger closed last week, the new studio leadership group led by co-chairs Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg sent a loud message to the town that they meant business, closing a deal for the hot Timothée Chalamet-James Mangold package High Side, which Deadline first told you about.

It was a bold move and a bolt of energy that told the town Paramount 2.0 wasn’t looking to cut back on its upcoming feature slate, rather to make good on the promises made during merger talks. All of this was underscored this afternoon at a Los Angeles presser for the new Paramount.

“One of our biggest priorities is restoring Paramount as the No. 1 studio for filmmakers and talent in the world,” Paramount’s new CEO David Ellison said today at the media gathering.

At first glance, the new Paramount has a 2026 slate that looks a little bare – only five films slated for release. But studio insiders told TheWrap on Thursday that three other films that are deep in post-production are on course for release in 2026.

The first is “Heart of the Beast,” a survival thriller from “Suicide Squad” director David Ayer starring Brad Pitt as an Army special forces vet who must survive in the Alaskan wilderness with his retired combat dog after a plane crash. In April 2024, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that film producer Walter Hamada and Paramount Pictures would be developing a film based on Idw Publishing’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin. In the live-action movie realm, the turtles have had varying levels of success.

In the 1990s, the original trilogy started hot, but fell in popularity, drastically so by the time Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III came around. Thanks to an explosive popularity due to the 1987 animated series, this was many people’s introduction to the reptilian quartet.

However, aside from animation, the turtles hadn’t been in the flesh, so to speak, for over two decades. Thanks to Michael Bay and a team of directors, screenwriters, and producers, the pizza-loving shellshockers were back. Well, just in 2014 and 2016, as the Turtles’ designs and the plots proved unpopular with certain fans.

Of course, the Turtles have found life in animation.

The final years of the DC Extended Universe threw up some wonderfully deranged, perplexing, and even downright tragic moments. New details have come out about Henry Cavill’s exit as Superman, and it turns out the situation was messier than most people thought.

Cavill hadn’t been in any DC movies since 2017’s Justice League until he showed up briefly in 2022’s Black Adam. That cameo was supposed to kick off a fresh chapter for his Superman in the Dceu.

Five months ago, we heard that It screenwriter / Salem’s Lot director Gary Dauberman of Coin Operated was teaming up with Walter Hamada’s 18hz to produce an untitled horror film for Paramount, with director André Øvredal working from a screenplay by Zachary Donohue and T.W. The film watches as a flight carrying the body of a priest who died during an exorcism experiences some unexpected turbulence. Dauberman will produce for Coin Operated alongside Mia Maniscalco, who serves as President of his company.

The project marks a reunion for Donohue and Coin Operated, who have only recently teamed on an untitled horror film directed by André Øvredal for Paramount. And now, Deadline reports that it’s getting another remake, or reimagining, as Rodrigue Huart is set to write and direct a new take on the material that’s called Suffer Little Children for Paramount Pictures.

Exclusive: Paramount Pictures has preemptively acquired the original horror script Suffer Little Children from writer-director, Rodrigue Huart. Huart will direct from a script he wrote with Walter Hamada producing through his 18Hz Productions under the company’s output deal at the studio, alongside producer and rightsholder Pablo Cruz, who will produce through his Canana banner. Nick Romano will executive produce for 18Hz Productions.

The project is a reimagining of the 1976 Spanish horror film Who Can Kill A Child?, which has garnered cult classic status. Plot details are under wraps, but the original film follows a couple who travels to a remote island for vacation, but they soon realize that all the adults on the island have been killed. The 1976 film was directed by Narciso Ibáñez Serrador and is based on the novel El Juego De Los Ninos by Juan José Plans.

Henry Cavill was officially replaced as Superman for James Gunn's new DC Universe, but a new report says the actor was considered to be recast years before that. The DC Extended Universe ended ignominiously back in 2023 with a string of flops that seemed to bring an emphatic end to this beleaguered shared timeline. It followed one of the strangest and damaging moments in Dceu history with 2022's "Black Adam." That movie, wherein The Rock got to live out his fantasy of playing a DC hero while simultaneously trying to gain control of DC's cinematic projects as a whole, featured Henry Cavill's Man of Steel in a cameo that was heralded as an official return for the British star. The actor's tenure as Supes began with Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel" in 2013 and previously seemed to have ended with "Zack Snyder's Justice League" in 2021. "Black Adam," however, was...

After successfully playing the titular character in 2019's Shazam!, Zachary Levi reprized the role in 2023's Shazam! Fury of the Gods. While the latter was a box office and critical flop, the actor might not be entirely done playing the DC superhero.

Speaking to Variety about a potential return to the role, Levi said, "Absolutely. I loved playing the role." When asked if there were any official plans for a third Shazam! installment, his response was short and honest. "No idea. It's all well above my pay grade," he explained. Several factors resulted in the franchise being dropped after the 2023 film. The biggest was that Fury of the Godsgrossed just $134 million worldwide against a budget of $110 million compared to the $368 million earnings of the first film.

The Accountant 2 director reveals why his plans for DC's Suicide Squadsequel were scrapped. Before James Gunn was hired to write and direct a sequel/soft reboot of 2016's Suicide Squad, Warner Bros. had approached O'Connor to course correct the franchise. O'Connor had just directed The Accountant for Warner Bros. and had made a name for himself directing gritty character-centric stories like Warrior, Pride and Glory, and Jane Got a Gun. Before James Gunn rebooted the DC cinematic universe, the Dceu was full of critical disasters. While there were gems like Wonder Woman in there, David Ayer's Suicide Squad is considered the lowest point of the franchise by many.

However, the film did do well enough to almost net a sequel. Despite the critical roasting it got from professionals and DC fans alike, it did actually make quite a lot of money - $749.2 million against a $175 million budget. It was the tenth highest-grossing movie of 2016, and to the shock of its haters it even won an Oscar in 2017 for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. A sequel was in development... but then it went away.

Writer Gavin O'Connor got pretty far into the script before everything changed. He told Collider all about it. "It's another example of the dysfunction of our industry. I had a very specific take. They wanted to do it.

Suicide Squad was released in 2016 to largely negative reviews. However, director David Ayer has maintained that the movie we saw in theaters was not the version he wanted or planned to bring to the big screen. 

It's no secret that Warner Bros. interfered, adding colourful graphics and catchy pop tunes to lighten the blockbuster's tone. That, and a new ending, came after people largely rejected Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice's dark approach to its characters. 

Before James Gunn helmed 2021's The Suicide Squad, Gavin O'Connor was writing a version of the movie we've heard was set to pit Task Force X against Black Adam. 

Talking to Collider, the filmmaker revealed that Will Smith's Deadshot was going to be put front and centre in his Suicide Squad 2 and blamed Warner Bros. and "the new DC President" for wanting to "make it a comedy."

The DC Extended Universe wasn't exactly a success, though it would be wrong to say that it didn't deliver some good stories and box office hits. Still, something needed to change, and that's why DC Studios was formed at the start of 2023.

Over the past two years, we've seen the Dcu slowly start to take shape. Superman will kick things off properly this summer after Creature Commandos gave us a taste of what's to come, and beyond that, the slate is - mostly - shaping up to be in equal parts intriguing and exciting.

However, when DC Studios decided to take these characters back to the drawing board, there were some casualties. James Gunn has enlisted many of his friends to reprise their respective DC roles, but with a fresh start on the horizon, many movies and ideas were scrapped.

Exclusive: Loretta Ramos has been named Senior Director of Blumhouse and K Period Media’s Screamwriting Fellowship program.

Ramos previously served as interim head of the Sundance Institute’s Women of Sundance program.

In her role, she will be responsible for overseeing the program for the two companies, which is run in partnership with the Sundance Institute.

Before the conclusion of Season 3 of Netflix's fantasy drama The Witcher, word broke that Henry Cavill was preparing to pass on the role of Geralt of Rivia to Liam Hemsworth. While everyone involved with the franchise has been saying the right things regarding Cavill's hasty exit, that doesn't obscure the fact that this decision has raised many unanswered questions.

Henry Cavill was thrilled to land the part of Geralt. Reports suggest that he obsessively pursued the role before a single word had ever even been scripted by producers. Over the last 15 years, director André Øvredal has brought us the likes of Troll Hunter, The Autopsy of Jane Doe, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, Mortal, and The Last Voyage of the Demeter. He missed out on the Stephen King / Richard Bachman adaptation The Long Walk and has said that not making that movie is one of the big regrets of his life… but he’s not letting that missed opportunity slow him down. The cast is shaping up for Paramount’s untitled horror movie from The Autopsy of Jane Doe director André Øvredal.

Deadline reports that Oscar winner Melissa Leo (The Fighter), Jacob Scipio (Bad Boys for Life), and Lou Llobell (“Foundation”) have boarded the project.

The screenplay is written by Zachary Donohue (The Den) and T.W. Burgess (Mister Howl), but plot details are being kept under wraps.

Former Warner Bros production executive Walter Hamada, who steered the Conjuring and It franchises, is producing via his 18hz as part of his first-look deal with Paramount. It screenwriter Gary Dauberman is also producing via Coin Operated.

Øvredal earned intentional attention with his Norwegian found footage mockumentary Trollhunter before making his English-language debut with The Autopsy of Jane Doe. He has since helmed the likes of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and The Last Voyage of the Demeter.

Former Warner Bros production executive Hamada is producing the pic via his production company as part of his first-look deal with Paramount, alongside It screenwriter Gary Dauberman via Coin Operated. The screenplay is written by Zachary Donohue and T.W. Burgess; the plot, of course, is under wraps. Nathan Samdahl of 18hz will executive produce. Hamada is also producing Primate, which is in post-production, at Paramount.

Leo won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 2011 for Paramount’s David O. Russell-directed The Fighter. She’s starred in such movies as Frozen River, on which she received an Oscar nom for Best Actress, and Denis Villeneuve’s Prisoners, The Equalizer franchise, Oliver Stone’s Snowden and the HBO series I Know This Much Is True. She is repped by Gersh.

Last March, we learned that playwright turned feature scribe Ana Nogueira had been tapped to pen a Teen Titans screenplay after impressing DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran with her work on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

There have been conflicting reports about which characters will make up the superhero team in the Dcu, with the latest reports claiming it will be Teen Titans Go! leads Robin, Raven, Starfire, Cyborg and Beast Boy.

With The Brave and the Bold set to revolve around Batman training Damian Wayne, the likelihood of Teen Titans' Robin being Dick Grayson is low. That will upset many fans but, at this point in the Dcu's timeline, Dick is almost certainly Nightwing.

The last decade has seen the DC franchise go in all sorts of different directions. Zack Snyder began to tell his own saga leading to the formation of the Justice League, but then Warner Bros. decided to change course. The result led to more films set in the DC Extended Universe with ranging tones from filmmakers. Good films came out of the new approach from DC Films president Walter Hamada with Shazam!, The Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey stand out. DC Films would also begin to explore films outside the Dceu continuity with Joker and The Batman. However, despite some better-quality films, a series of box office flops made it clear DC needed a reboot.

If you haven’t heard, Jason Momoa has been officially cast as Lobo in the Dcu and will reportedly make his debut in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which I wrote about here. It’s exciting news as fans have said Momoa is the perfect choice with some even comparing the appropriateness of the casting to Robert Downey Junior’s Iron Man. Gunn has said he was open to casting old Dceu actors in roles for the Dcu and has made good on his word. Now that the door is open, let’s take other actors from the Dceu and cast them in the fresh Dcu.

With James Gunn's Dcu on the horizon, there's a hefty handful of projects to look forward to. Long gone are the Dceu days of scrapped projects and crushed dreams because there's a new head honcho. The Dcu in late 2024 is all about open-mindedness and looking forward to the future. Creature Commandos(which releases on December 5th, 2024) and 2025's David Corenswet-led Superman both stand as beacons of hope for DC Comics fans whose hearts were ripped out by the failings of the DC Extended Universe. While the Dcu is only trending upwards right now, it's hard not to look back and wonder what could've been, especially for one particular scrapped 2020 film.

In October 2024, Warner Bros. announced a slate of 11 films to be featured in the newest cinematic universe, the Dceu. The slate was a 6-year plan featuring Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Man of Steel, Aquaman, and a few other projects.

Paramount has acquired rights to Sarah Pinsker‘s 2020 horror novella Two Truths and a Lie and have set Enemy screenwriter Javier Gullón to adapt it for the big screen, Deadline reports today.

In the novella, “Stella thought she’d made up a lie on the spot, asking her childhood friend if he remembered the strange public broadcast TV show with the unsettling host she and all the neighborhood kids appeared on years ago. But he does remember. And so does her mom. So why doesn’t Stella? The more she investigates the show and the grip it has on her hometown, the eerier the mystery grows.”

Gullón is best known for penning Denis Villeneuve’s psychological thriller, Enemy, but Deadline also notes that the screenwriter recently thriller spec script The Bet to Warner Bros. It’s described as “a twisty, female-led thriller with pitch-black humor, set at a glittering destination for the ultra-rich.
