Some of audiences very favorite episodes are the ones where characters from an entirely different show pop up, like when two “ER” doctors showed up on “Friends,” when Sam and Dean got sucked into an episode of “Scooby-Doo,” or, most recently, when “9-1-1” LAPD sergeant Athena Grant took an unplanned cruise aboard the Odyssey.

But sitting with Amy Poehler on her new “Good Hang” podcast, the Emmy winner shared that her own Janine Teagues was met with criticism from Black women because she was not perfectly put together. She remembered it feeling like Janine was expected to be representative of all Black women.

Abbott Elementary is submitting the Gang at the Emmys — but not all.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia stars Kaitlin Olson, Charlie Day, and Rob McElhenney, who guest-starred in an Abbott-Sunny crossover in January, are among ABC comedy's guest acting submissions. Conspicuously absent are Danny DeVito and Glenn Howerton, who appeared in the episode as well. Howerton, however, only made a brief cameo (due to scheduling conflicts with Netflix's Sirens) and does not meet the 5 percent screen time rule for guest submissions.

Abbott's other guest actress entrant is Talia Shire, who plays Melissa's (Lisa Ann Walter) mom, Teresa Schemmenti. Keith David, who plays Frank, Ava's (Janelle James) estranged father, and Gregory's (Tyler James Williams) barber, is the other guest actor submission.

These are just the network/studio's submissions; anyone can personally submit themselves, so there's still a chance DeVito and other guest stars appear on the ballot.

I’m not the first to note that entertainment studios’ terror of gambling and losing on original stories has made it so that nearly every project that makes it in front of our eyes — including literally all 10 of last year’s biggest movies — belongs to a franchise. We all know the big ones, but this goes beyond the MCU, the Dceu, Star Wars, Star Trek and the Disney princesses: We’re now living in a world where The Big Bang Theory is about to launch its third spin-off. Even shows on AppleTV+ — a platform that, famously, no one watches, and that we just learned is losing its parent company more than $1 billion a year — are becoming franchises: as Mythic Quest spins off the anthology show Side Quest, I think we can officially say franchise fever has gone too far.

If there’s one thing Apple TV+’s Mythic Quest loves, it’s a detour. This has been true since the very first season, which paused midway through for a one-off about two characters we hadn’t met before and haven’t seen since. It’s remained so through subsequent seasons that devoted entire episodes to detailing the backstories of members from the core ensemble, or catching up with a minor character we hadn’t seen in years.

Now it extends all the way to the series’ first spinoff, Side Quest. As the cute title might suggest, this is essentially a Mythic Quest that’s nothing but those standalone chapters — that steps well outside Mq HQ to explore the other corners of the show’s universe, one quirky tale at a time. But as it turns out, a detour’s only a detour when there’s a set path to be deviating from.

Earlier this year, worlds collided when the stars of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia dropped into Willard R. Abbott Elementary School. This summer, it'll be Abbott Elementary's turn to invade Paddy's Pub. Abbott's William Stanford Davis recently spoke to Collider's Joe Schmidt about the upcoming crossover's conclusion.
