Creatives announced for Screen Diversity Showcase
Image
The 23 creatives for this year’s Screen Diversity Showcase have been unveiled after being selected by a panel of independent industry judges.

Hosted by the Equity Foundation, the initiative is designed to promote a platform for diverse voices across writing, directing, and performing.

More than 450 applications were received for this year’s program, which is the second of its kind to be held.

In a statement, the judges said they “truly valued” the opportunity to watch all the work that was submitted.

“There were so many wonderful actors bringing the scripts to life and we were especially blessed to hear the actors’ life stories and why they wished to have this opportunity,” they said.

“It was so special and inspiring to be a part of this process.

“We all very much look forward to casting actors who entered the Screen Diversity Showcase in future productions.”

The selected creatives will collaborate on five distinct projects,...

As our industry begins to recover from the last 12 months we must stand together and campaign for more quality local productions like our finalists and winners across every platform.”

Retrograde, which stars Pallavi Sharda, Ilai Swindells, Maria Angelico, Esther Hannaford, Nick Boshier and Max Brown, won in the comedy category.

Judges said of the Unless Pictures and Orange Entertainment Co series: “Through their zoom the characters negotiate their friendships,...

Meaa releases intimacy guidelines
Image
Australia now has its first ever set of intimacy guidelines for stage and screen, a result of 18 months of industry consultation by a dedicated committee of the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance (Meaa).

The guidelines, freely available on the Meaa website, aim to establish new processes for work involving nudity, intimacy, simulated sexual activity and sexual violence, so that actors are best prepared and supported.

They cover off on best practice for situations spanning the entire filmmaking process from casting and auditions through to post-production and marketing.

Screen Producers Australia (Spa), the Australian Directors’ Guild (Adg), the Casting Guild of Australia (Cga) and the Meaa National Stunt Committee have each endorsed the document. All were part of the consultation process, alongside individual actors, fight directors, theatre directors, stunt co-ordinators, intimacy co-ordinators, intimacy directors and the Australian Writers’ Guild (Awg).

The guidelines follow on from a series of workshops and seminars...

Op ed: Roy Billing on imported actors
For nearly 40 years I have had an enjoyable and successful career as an actor. While I hope this will continue, I worry that Actors. Equity seems to be impeding the growth and development of the Australian film and television sector, where most of my work comes from. I have been an Equity member for all my career.

Until my recent resignation, I was an elected member of the National Performers. Committee (Npc) of the Equity division of the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance trade union.

The Npc.s regular meetings, chaired by Equity President Simon Burke, are supposed to discuss .leading industrial and professional issues and the best course of action to take to ensure a strong and vibrant entertainment industry and a safe and fair workplace for performers.. As an ex-insider, I am not convinced that the Npc.s interpretation of .the best course of action. is necessarily in...
