Emmy-Winning Factual Specialist Lucy van Beek Launches Tailfeather Productions With Netflix, Apple Commissions

Lucy van Beek, the award-winning factual TV and film specialist, has launched her own production outfit, Tailfeather Productions.

The company, whose focus will be premium specialist factual documentaries and series for streaming platforms, broadcasters and theatrical release, launches with two major commissions, “Alexander: The Making of a God” for Netflix and “Born to Be Wild” for Apple TV+.

Van Beek, who trained with the BBC Natural History Unit, has been behind shows including “Britain From Above” for the BBC and National Geographic’s “China’s Megatomb Revealed.” Across her career she’s won seven Emmy Awards, a BAFTA, the New York Film Festival Creative Award, and numerous science and natural history awards.

“My mission with Tailfeather is to use the latest research and technology combined with journalistic rigour and compelling storytelling, to craft specialist factual experiences that will resonate with audiences,” said van Beek. “We want to unlock the past...

British Natural History Vet Lucy Van Beek Launches Tailfeather Productions; First Project Is Netflix’s ‘Alexander: The Making Of A God’

British natural history vet Lucy van Beek has unveiled Tailfeather Productions, with commissions for Netflix’s Alexander: The Making of a God and Apple TV+’s Born to Be Wild launching imminently.

Van Beek trained at BBC Studios Natural History Unit and has won seven Emmys and a BAFTA.

She has most recently been working on the Netflix and Apple commissions, both of which were first revealed by Deadline last year. Alexander, which is being made in association with her former employer Lion Television and Nick Catliff, will drop in five days time and uses contemporary accounts and fact-based archaeology to tell the story of one of the greatest rulers of our time. Born to Be Wild is co-produced with Offspring Films and follows six rare young animals for several years, as they are brought up in our world, but destined to return to theirs.

‘Endangered Planet’ & ‘Born To Be Wild’ Natural History Series Greenlit By Apple TV+

Exclusive: With Hollywood scripted grinding to a halt, Apple TV+ is doubling down on natural history series.

The streamer has greenlit a duo of six-part docs titled Born to be Wild and Endangered Planet, Deadline can reveal, both of which carry urgent messages around the need to help save rare species on Earth.

Born to be Wild will follow endangered animals including a Savanna elephant calf, cheetahs and a moon bear cub, as they are brought up by humans with a view to returning to their homelands once they are ready.

Endangered Planet, meanwhile, will use cutting-edge technology to uncover insights into protecting precious species including the Gobi bear, Malayan tiger, Javan rhino, Caucasian leopard, Cross River gorilla and the North Atlantic right whale.

Apple TV+ has been keen on natural history since its inception and both series are being produced by UK indie Offspring Films, which also made Tom Hiddleston...

Science Channel‘s inaugural Are We Alone? Month last March was a terrific success for them, so they’re doing the right thing and bringing it back this year.
