Japanese animation Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna came in second over the weekend, grossing $9.6m.

Locally-produced war film Sacrifice topped China’s box office last weekend (October 30-November 1), according to figures from Artisan Gateway, grossing a further $28.6m for a cumulative total of $105.8m.

Co-directed by Frant Gwo, Guan Hu and Lu Yang, the film was produced to celebrate the 70th anniversary of China’s entry into the Korean War. The three-day weekend gross included $1.6m from 670 IMAX screens.

Patriotic and gritty war film “The Sacrifice” topped the mainland Chinese box office for the second week. It earned $28.6 million over the weekend, lifting its ten-day cumulative score to $106 million, according to data from Artisan Gateway.

Of that weekend score, some $1.6 million was earned from 670 Imax screens. The Imax box office total for the film now stands at $6M, or some 5.5% of its 10-day overall total.

Japanese animated feature, “Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution” was the weekend’s premier new release. It ranked second with a $9.60 million three-day opening performance.

Omnibus, propaganda film “My Country, My Hometown” slipped to third place with a $7.8 million score in its fifth weekend of release. Its cumulative total now stands at $402 million, making it one of the biggest films anywhere in the world this year.

Chinese romantic comedy, “Oversize Love” about an overweight woman who miraculously loses the pounds, placed fourth. It earned $3.0 million in its three-day opening.

Exclusive: The Neighborhood‘s Beth Behrs has boarded female buddy action comedy Twin Blades. She joins the previously set Ma Li in the Eva Jin-directed film. Cristal Pictures is co-producing along with The Donners’ Company’s Lauren Shuler Donner and Jack Leslie.

The story centers on an unlikely pair of alpha females. Zoe (Behrs) is an American tech entrepreneur who relocates her company to China. Maylin (Ma) is a local female bodyguard who is hired to protect her. When Zoe’s life is threatened, the odd couple must put aside differences and join forces to survive. Production is slated for the second quarter of 2019 in Hong Kong and mainland China.

Legally Blonde screenwriter Karen McCullah completed a rewrite of the script which Cristal acquired from Ingrid Eskeland-Adetuyi in 2017. Cristal and Wanda Media are co-financing the project.

Iconic actress Michelle Yeoh is to be honored alongside Warner Bros. chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara at the U.S.-China Entertainment Summit in Los Angeles later this month. Elizabeth Daley and Steven J. Ross, dean and Time Warner professor at the USC School of Cinematic Arts, respectively, will also be honored.

Held at the Skirball Cultural Center on Oct. 30, the summit conference comes at a time of ratcheted-up tensions between China and the U.S. and at a moment of profound change in the two countries’ entertainment industry relations.

Xin Cheng Jiang’s sci-fi love story wins at Beijing Film Market.

Sci-fi love story The Gate, a film about a tour guide who finds himself in a virtual gaming world, has won the Mpa Grand Prize in Beijing. The film’s writer/director, Xin Cheng Jiang, is known as an influential commercial TV director.

The award was presented at the Motion Picture Association (Mpa) - Beijing Film Market (Bfm) Film Workshop, held during the Beijing International Film Festival (Biff).

The prize includes sending Xin Cheng Jiang on “a week long film immersion course in Los Angeles”.

Mike Ellis, president and MD for the Mpa Asia Pacific, also awarded a President’s Special Recognition Prize to director Yang Jin for the project Instant Love - a comedic love story set in Tokyo about a Chinese man who will do anything to win the heart of a Japanese girl.

Romantic comedies continue to prove popular in mainstream Chinese cinemas, glossy tales of modern urban relationships consistently ranking amongst the biggest domestic box office achievers. American filmmaker Dennie Gordon is teaming with international star Zhang Ziyi on the Chinese-language film My Lucky Star, the long-awaited prequel to the Chinese hit Sophie's Revenge. The story is described as an exotic, multi-city romance containing elements of mistaken identity and an international crime caper that takes Ziyi, reprising her role as Sophie, on a glamorous adventure from Beijing to Singapore to Hong Kong and Macau. Wme signed Chinese filmmaker Eva Jin, who just directed Sophie’s Revenge, a film whose star Fan Bingbing has also signed with the agency. Jin recently teamed with Timur Bekmambetov for a Russian-Chinese remake of Bekmambetov’s Yolki. Aside from Sophie’s Revenge, the Chinese actress Bingbing also starred in Shaolin and Buddha Mountain, latter of which won her Best Actress at the 2010 Tokyo Film Festival. She most recently starred in the Korean War epic My Way, which has become arguably Korea’s biggest ever movie release. Bingbing is managed by Fbb Studios’ Timothy Mou.

After years of blockbusters and special effects eye candy, it looks like Timur Bekmambetov is ready to pull a bit of a Garry Marshall. Bekmambetov and Chinese filmmaker Eva Jin are the first two filmmakers to sign up for the remake of the Russian hit "Yolki" ("Six Degrees Of Celebration") whose sequel "Yolki 2" is currently blowing up the box office in its homeland. The remake will take place around the Chinese New Year, centering on a little girl who is eager to get a message to the President, and decides to use the popular Kevin Bacon theory to get the job done. Six handshakes will connect people across eight stories and time zones that will see the story span from a lowly migrant right up to the President himself. Heartwarming and inclusive! Bemambetov and Jin will be joined by six other directors each taking a segment/storyline in this Chinese/Russian co-production.

Russia and China are collaborating on a new project, but you won't be hearing the talking heads on CNN deconstructing. Instead, Deadline says Russian filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted) is collaborating with Chinese filmmaker Eva Jin (Sophie's Revenge) for a joint remake of the Russian film Yolki (Six Degrees of Celebration). Bekmambetov was one of several Russian directors to contribute to the original film, which is comprised of different linked vignettes. The original version of Yolki told the intersecting stories of eight different Russians whose lives intertwine over the course of New Year's Eve. Yimeng Jin's Sophie's Revenge is a gleeful, well-polished Chinese rom-com with a lot of slapstick humor and snippy banter. The film follows the story of Sophie (Zhang Ziyi), a cartoonist who is trying to win back her ex-boyfriend from a famous movie star, Joanna (Bingbing Fan).  Racing against time, Sophie, with the help of the handsome, mysterious Gordon (Peter Ho) employs questionable "scientific methods" to reclaim hunky Jeff (So Ji-sub).

First of all, if you are looking for a heart-wrenching, profound drama, Sophie's Revenge will definitely sink your boat.
