Billy Zane on the secret to playing Marlon Brando: Don’t give a s***
Billy Zane
In Waltzing with Brando, Billy Zane delivers an uncanny portrayal of the legendary Marlon Brando, and there’s a very simple secret to channelling one of cinema’s greatest icons — don’t give a shit.

While speaking with Empire, Zane explained that his approach to playing Brando was to do it “counter-intuitively,” which is to say, “to do it as if he would have done it, which was to not give a shit. I had to just be in his headspace.” This method even extends to include moments where Zane recreates scenes from some of Brando’s most iconic movies, such as The Godfather, Superman, and Apocalypse Now. “It was...

Billy Zane Plays Marlon Brando ‘As If He Would Have Done It, Which Was To Not Give A Shit’
Image
There’s a reason Marlon Brando ranks as one of the all-time-great actors. Across his career, he embodied so many legendary characters – sometimes he disappeared into them, other times the characters seemed to mould themselves over Brando’s own physicality and persona. You never knew quite what you’d get from him; his presence and his voice work always gave his performances a dimension of the unexpected. It’s a lot, then, for another actor to try and get under Brando’s skin – which was the task of Billy Zane, who looks near-indistinguishable from the man himself in Waltzing With Brando.

The film, from director Bill Fishman, follows Brando in the 1970s in Tahiti,...

If You Loved Happy Gilmore 2, You’ll Adore These 5 Comedy Films
Image
28 years after the release of Happy Gilmore, Adam Sandler is back with his sequel, Happy Gilmore 2. Set 29 years after Happy Gilmore won his first Tour Championship, he now returns to play golf for his daughter’s ballet school.

Just like the first film, the sequel is full of Sandler’s blend of potty‑mouth wit, underdog grit, and heartfelt redemption. The sequel brings back the beloved golf icon nearly three decades after the original, with nostalgic callbacks, the classic soundtrack, and a plot that finds Happy mentoring the next generation while still throwing fastballs (or golf tees) at anyone who gets in his way.

Reuniting Sandler with several of the original stars like Julie Bowen, Ben Stiller, Blake Clark, and Christopher McDonald, the film also stars several fresh faces like Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, and his daughters Sadie and Sunny Sandler. A sports comedy drama that would reignite your love for absurd premises,...

Before The Big Bang Theory, Jim Parsons Starred In An Awful Comedy Remake
Image
Jim Parsons has become synonymous with the role of Sheldon Cooper, his quirky, "bazinga"-spewing, super nerd from the long-running sitcom "The Big Bang Theory." Parsons made such an impact as Sheldon that the character received his own spinoff series, "Young Sheldon," after "The Big Bang Theory" ended. Though the series portrayed Sheldon as a child, now played by Iain Armitage, Parsons returned to deliver voiceover throughout the series. He also made a cameo appearance as the older Sheldon in the series finale. Throughout all 12 seasons of "The Big Bang Theory" and his subsequent role in "Young Sheldon," Parsons had found the character who will now define the rest of his career.

Before Parsons was cast as Sheldon Cooper, though, he had not found quite so much success in some of his early comedy appearances. In 2006, he had a background role in "School for Scoundrels," a remake of the 1960 British...

The 7 Best New Movies Streaming on HBO Max in July
Image
Max may have changed its name (back) to HBO Max, but the streamer is still “the one to watch” this July. The streaming service offers a slew of new films to stream, including some of the first half of the year’s best movies. This month may be lighter than some of Max’s offerings in the past, but it still has a few crowd pleasers and heavy hitters you can stream through the summer.

Here are the seven best movies that are now streaming on HBO Max in July.

“The Big Lebowski” (Gramercy Pictures) “The Big Lebowski”

A cult classic turned outright classic, “The Big Lebowski” remains one of the most popular films in the Coen Brothers’ storied catalog. Though at first considered by audiences as a lesser Coens feature, “The Big Lebowski” has since earned a reputation of extreme quality for its irreverent comedy and stellar performances.

Like many Coen Brothers features,...

This Iconic Comedy From 2004 Is Now A Streaming Hit On HBO Max
Image
A cult classic comedy from 21 years ago is now trending on streaming, proving that it still resonates with audiences. It can be hard to predict exactly what movies will make an impression on streaming platforms, especially if certain movies weren't particularly popular at the box office when they were first released.

Comedy movies often do surprisingly well on streaming, partly because comedy movies have changed so much over the years. Older comedies offer something that audiences don't get to see very much of today, so they can consistently outperform more modern movies on streaming.

Gosh! ‘A Minecraft Movie’ Is a Streaming Hit, and So Is Jared Hess’ 21-Year-Old Cult Hit
Image
Jared Hess' A Minecraft Movie was one of the bigger surprise hits of the year, both in movie theaters and now on streaming. Riding the wave of its success is Hess' endlessly quotable directorial debut, which was an even bigger surprise hit in the summer of 2004, when an indie comedy with a cast full of unknowns became the sleeper hit of the year. Napoleon Dynamiteis now the #9 streaming movie on HBO Max, trailing A Minecraft Movie at #2.

Napoleon Dynamite has its origins in Peluca, a nine-minute black-and-white short film about a nerdy high school student. Directed by Hess and starring the then-unknown Jon Heder, the film was a hit at the Slamdance Film Festival, and Hess and his wife and producing partner, Jerusha Hess, secured $400,000 Usd to make a feature-length version of the film. Heder returned as the title character for the movie, which was shot in southern Idaho. The...

Napoleon Dynamite's Success Led To An Awful Animated Series That Was Canceled After 6 Episodes
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Jared Hess' oddball comedy "Napoleon Dynamite" was an enormous success when it was released back in 2004, making over $46 million on its tiny $400,000 budget. The film was just peculiar enough to attract a snarky audience of jeering twentysomethings who liked to quote the film's kooky dialogue and imitate lead actor Jon Heder's peculiar delivery. The title character lived in a boring city in Idaho, but, like a Wes Anderson character, also lived in a carefully constructed personal universe of his own. Napoleon was always confident and assured, even as he was relentlessly picked on at his high school. His fashion sense stunk, but he attacked the world with a strangely laconic self-assurance that one can't help but envy.

The character was striking enough to launch a miniature industry of "Vote for Pedro" T-shirts, sweaters, mugs, Funko Pops, bumper stickers, and Halloween costumes.

The film is scheduled for release in the U.S. and Canada on Friday, September 19, 2025. Vmi Worldwide is handling international sales at the Cannes market.

Directed and written by Bill Fishman (Tapeheads), Waltzing with Brando is based on the published memoir by Los Angeles architect Bernard Judge, who was hired by Brando in the late 1960s to design an ecologically self-sustaining retreat on a remote and uninhabitable atoll in Tahiti. What begins as an architectural experiment becomes an eccentric and emotional journey into isolation, celebrity, and the limits of utopian idealism.

Jared Hess Is Still a Sundance Guy: Why the Smash Hit ‘Minecraft Movie’ Feels a Little Like an Indie Film
Image
When asked if Hollywood is finally facing its video game renaissance, Jared Hess abruptly switched topics, from “Minecraft” to “Nosferatu.”

“I just loved it,” “A Minecraft Movie” director Hess told IndieWire of the gothic romance from last year. Robert Eggers’ award-winning vampire movie adapts the 1922 German film and Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” by extension. It’s set centuries before video games were invented, but for Hess, Eggers’ exacting and gutsy reconsideration is proof of a key principle behind “A Minecraft Movie.”

“A lot of big movies from the last 20-plus years, so much of the imagery and the experience feels similar,” said Hess. “My favorite [films] are the ones that have personality and characters and interesting things that are unexpected and that surprise you. Those films always inspire me.”

Hess made his feature debut at Sundance in 2004 with an underdog comedy that demonstrated a clarity of vision beyond the twenty-something filmmaker’s years.

Eerie Teaser Trailer for 'I See the Demon' Indie Sci-Fi Horror Thriller
Image
"We don't know what we're going to wake up to, like, what the world is going to be like..." An early teaser trailer has debuted for an indie horror film titled I See the Demon, from filmmaker Jacob Lees Johnson. This is premiering at the 2025 Cinequest Film Festival in March if anyone wants to catch it - grab tickets. It's described as a "mublegore sci-fi thriller" - I dig that the title seems like misdirection. There is a strange comet up in the sky? And other weird things going on? Is it a demon or aliens or something else entirely? At her surprise birthday party, an emotionally vulnerable woman experiences unexplainable phenomena that threaten to turn the best night of her life into a never-ending nightmare. Lucy sees a strange object in the sky, but everyone keeps telling her everything is fine. This stars Alexis Zollicoffer, Jon Heder, Mallory Everton,...

'Euphoria' Star Storm Reid Calls Leaving Hit HBO Series "Bittersweet"
Image
Euphoriafans have waited a long time for the hit drama to return. Unfortunately, the cast will be missing several beloved performers when the show finally does resurface for Season 3. The death of Angus Cloud in 2023 was a tragic blow for the must-see series, but Barbie Ferreira and Storm Reid's departures have also been tough pills to swallow, and all three actors will be sorely missed. In fact, Reid said that not returning as Zendaya’s on-screen sister, Gia Bennett, is "bittersweet" in an interview with Variety:

"That’s my sister before 'Euphoria' and after. That’s gonna be my sister for life, so I’m sure we’ll work together again one day in some capacity. [It’s] bittersweet. I love Gia. Inside ‘Napoleon Dynamite Live’: How the Sundance Cult Classic Became a Never-Ending Road Trip
Image
Through a haze of tater tots and ill-tempered llamas, it can be easy to forget that “Napoleon Dynamite” is also about time travel. There’s a literal time machine in the movie, yes, but it’s also an ode to retro-nostalgia and small-town teen angst.

Jared Hess’ 2004 cult classic about a pack of misfits growing up in Preston, Idaho, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to mixed results. The low-stakes story was hugely meme-able but still confusing to critics in the mostly pre-internet age. Now, it’s a persistent triumph of the American indie scene and a live show amid an ongoing tour.

“We had no idea anybody would see this film,” said Jon Heder (aka Napoleon himself). “It’s become the ultimate case study. You can go from writing a story to casting the right people to making an endearing and enduring film. It’s absolutely doable.”

“But let’s face it,...

Plan B Review: A Refreshing Take on Modern Romance
Image
Brandon Tamburri’s Plan B delves into the turbulent life of Piper Brennan (Jamie Lee), who becomes unexpectedly pregnant after a drunken one-night affair with her socially awkward neighbour, Evan (Jon Heder).

This scenario exemplifies a modern dilemma: balancing personal goals with societal expectations. Piper’s predicament is more than merely humorous; it reflects contemporary fears about love and duty.

Her decision-making process reflects deep internal turmoil. She oscillates between the attraction of a carefree life and the sombre reality of imminent motherhood. Piper’s cynical answer, seeking a wealthy spouse to claim her pregnant kid as his, reflects the extent to which people will go to fit societal moulds—a subject that has been repeated throughout history.

Piper’s plan puts her into contact with Cameron (Michael Lombardi), an attractive investment banker, and the film deftly alternates between moments of humour and self-reflection. Their flirtation raises issues about the...

Billy Zane Transforms into Marlon Brando in First Trailer for Waltzing with Brando
Image
If you’re looking for a distraction from the hellscape of American politics, look no further than the first trailer for a forthcoming biopic of one of our most legendary actors. Featuring Billy Zane in quite a transformative performance, Waltzing with Brando follows the star during his late-60s/early-70s period pre-The Godfather, when he recruits a Los Angeles architect to build the world’s first ecologically perfect retreat on a small, uninhabited island in Tahiti.

Directed by Bill Fishman and also starring Jon Heder, Richard Dreyfuss, and Tia Carrere, the film is set for a world premiere as the closing film of Torino Film Festival this month and is still seeking U.S. distribution.

“He may be the biggest star in the world — or so they said — or the most famous man…. but he was on the s— list and he was on the outs, and maybe [his] retreat was licking his wounds,...

Billy Zane Stuns as Marlon Brando in Waltzing With Brando Trailer
Image
The first trailer for Waltzing With Brando, the new biopic about the iconic Godfather actor has dropped and we are, frankly, blown away by Billy Zane's take on Marlon Brando. The Titanic actor has so completely transformed in the role, it took us more than a few minutes to clock that it even was Billy Zane in the film.

The film, which also stars Napoleon Dynamite star John Heder, the Bill Fishman-directed feature has officially been picked up by Vmi Worldwide for foreign sales, according to exclusive reporting from Variety.

What Is The New Marlon Brando Movie About?

Waltzing With Brando is based on the memoir by Los Angeles-based architect Bernard Judge. In his 2011 book, Waltzing with Brando: Planning a Paradise in Tahiti, Judge recounts his time planning and building a series of rustic bungalows for the iconic actor on a remote Tahitian atoll called Tetiaroa a tiny,...

Billy Zane Is Unrecognizable as Marlon Brando in ‘Waltzing for Brando’ — Watch Trailer
Image
Yes, that’s Billy Zane beneath those prosthetics.

The “Titanic” alum is unrecognizable as late star Marlon Brando in the first trailer for biopic “Waltzing for Brando.” The feature, written and directed by Bill Fishman, is based on a memoir by Bernard Judge.

The film takes place between 1969 and 1974, with Brando readying to shoot “The Godfather” and “Last Tango in Paris.” During that time, the actor purchased an uninhabitable island in Tahiti and recruited Los Angeles architect Judge, portrayed by Jon Heder, to build the world’s first ecologically friendly retreat.

Richard Dreyfuss, “Emily in Paris” star Camille Razat, Alaina Huffman, Tia Carrere, and James Jagger co-star in the film, which is now seeking a buyer.

The film will close the Torino Film Festival and play the Tahoe Film Festival. Prior to its world premiere, “Waltzing for Brando” was picked up by Vmi Worldwide for foreign sales.

The first trailer for Waltzing with Brando, a new film tracking Marlon Brando’s early ’70s plan to create a vacation resort in Tahiti, has been revealed.

He was deeply committed to sustainability and aimed to infuse this ethos into his new island retreat. The trailer shows Brando bringing the task to Judge, who commends Brando’s ambitions but worries about its practicality. Billy Zane is Marlon Brando in 'Waltzing with Brando' Comedy Trailer
Image
"To live out there [on the remote island] with even a moderate amount of modern convenience would be a monumental undertaking." There's no release date or any other info yet - this is expected to arrive sometime in 2025 next year. Billy Zane stars as Brando in this wacky look at his life. Based on the book written by the architect who actually did all of this for Brando. The book tells stories about Brando and is also about Tetiaroa, "Brando's private atoll, [wondering] about living in nature without despoiling the environment. Questions are asked. Waltzing with Brando trailer stars Billy Zane as the iconic actor wanting to live on a secluded island
Billy Zane
Billy Zane has displayed an uncanny resemblance to Marlon Brando, going all the way back to Dead Calm, where he looked like him in his On the Waterfront days. Zane is now able to capitalize on doppleganging the star of The Godfather and Apocalypse Now in Waltzing with Brando. Zane was first cast as Marlon Brando all the way back in 2019 – and things have been pretty much silent for the bulk of the five years that followed. The movie hit the Cannes market and now, Vmi Worldwide has released the first trailer.

Billy Zane’s Marlon Brando is from a pivotal era in the legendary actor’s career, with Waltzing with Brando taking place in the late ‘60s into the early ‘70s, when his work shifted dramatically and he reinvented himself. Appropriately, Zane has entirely reinvented his look to portray Brando. Photos made available courtesy of Deadline fresh out of...

John Oliver Tells Stephen Colbert About Teary Eyed Kamala Harris Endorsement: ‘I Wasn’t Crying, I’m British, I’m Dead Inside’
Image
John Oliver stopped by “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on Monday, with the “Last Week Tonight” host addressing the viral video in which he urged his viewers to vote for Kamala Harris.

Oliver made headlines with his plea to voters, appearing to fight back tears as he told those watching “Look, I love this country. I’m an immigrant. I chose to be here” and that he would be voting for Vice President Harris.

But Oliver told Colbert that he was flabbergasted by how much coverage the clip received. “I wasn’t crying. I’m British. I’m dead inside,” Oliver said.

Oliver later admitted that he “generally” only cries while watching movies on airplanes. The last movie to bring him to tears in the friendly skies? The Will Ferrell-Jon Heder figure skating comedy “Blades of Glory.”

Oliver and Colbert then discussed plans for election day, with...

First-Look Images Reveal That Billy Zane Looks Exactly Like Marlon Brando in Upcoming Biopic
Image
Marlon Brando is an icon of cinema. Whether you like him or not, he is undoubtedly one of the greatest and most talented actors we’ve ever seen. He had the pathos; he had the ability to take on the most complex of roles, and that earned him the status of a proper icon.

Well, that and his amazing roles, which include films such as The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, On the Waterfront, Last Tango in Paris, and many more.

But Brando’s private life was as dynamic as his career. The actor was known as a problematic person with a difficult personality, which made it hard to work with him on more than one occasion. All of this got even more difficult as Brando got older, and by the time he reached old age, more people wanted to avoid him than work with him.

And while Brando’s life deserves a whole series,...

One Of The Earliest Hit Video Games Getting Action-Comedy Movie From Oscar-Nominated Marvel & Jump Street Alums
Image
Movies based on hit video games have been notoriously difficult to get right, but Hit-Monkey creators Will Speck and Josh Gordon have their sights set on adapting The Oregon Trail. Originally created in 1971, the adventure game was initially developed as an educational tool to teach middle school students about 19th-century pioneer life. Renowned for its frequently dark and often amusing outcomes, it would become synonymous with having its players repeatedly die of dysentery. Over the years, the game has seen countless remakes and spinoffs created, with a PlayStation 5 edition released as recently as February 2024.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Speck and Gordon have been tapped by Apple Studios to direct and produce a movie adaptation of The Oregon Trail based on a script penned by screenwriters and comedians The Lucas Bros. (Judas and the Black Messiah) and Max Reisman. The movie adaptation is also reported to feature original musical numbers in the vein of 2023s Barbie,...

Efren Ramirez Says Crank 3 Is 'Intense' & Shares Napoleon Dynamite Update
Image
It takes a lot of range to go from playing the quietly awkward Pedro in Napoleon Dynamite to getting ripped and donning drag to join Jason Statham in the loud, in-your-face film, Crank (more on that below). That's Efren Ramirez for you, an underrated and dynamic actor who swings wildly from genre to genre. MovieWeb spoke with him about the new film Seven Cemeteries, which also runs the gamut in terms of genre and style. It's a comedic Western horror film that sees him as a snarky undead companion to the one and only Danny Trejo, who plays Bruno, a hardcore but quirky antihero seeking a ragtag team to help him protect a woman's prized ranch from villainous drug lords. Again, it's a far cry from his iconic role in Napoleon Dynamite, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.

"I think Napoleon's so ingrained in people's minds today and for...

Jon Heder's 10 Best Movies And TV Shows
Image
The best Jon Heder movies and TV shows highlight why the Napoleon Dynamite and Blades of Glory actor has become known for his quirky, inimitable style. Born in Colorado in 1977, Jon Heder has become known over the years thanks to his unique style of performance that makes him instantly recognizable in almost any role. While he's best known for 2004's Napoleon Dynamite, this is far from his only appearance, and the actor has been a highlight of the cast lists of multiple movies and TV shows since his career began in 2000.

Heder's career has several intriguing facets. For example, he only starred in a handful of short movies prior to appearing in Napoleon Dynamite in 2004, giving his career something of an explosive start rather than it being a slow-burn rise to prominence. He's also been nominated for dozens of Teen Choice Awards specifically, making him an on-screen presence that particularly...

The Best Todd Phillips Movies, Ranked
Image
Todd Phillips made his directing and writing debut on a feature film with Road Trip back in 2000, for which he also has an acting credit. From there, the director has gone on to create some of the best comedies that have stuck around since their initial release. His usual genre took a slight turn with War Dogs, although the film is still laced with humor.

However, Phillips really showed the extension of his abilities with the thriller film Joker in 2019, which he also wrote and directed. The recent release of Joker: Folie Deux is Phillips' latest work, once again taking on the reimagining of the classic Batman villain. With plenty of other movies for fans of his to explore, the following list lays out some of Phillips' best work.
