Lilith Fair Documentary to Premiere on Hulu and Disney+ in September
Image
Sarah McLachlan’s late ’90s all-female touring festival Lilith Fair is the subject of a new feature-length documentary set to premiere on Hulu and Disney+ on Sunday, September 21st.

Titled Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery, the authorized film is inspired by the 2019 Vanity Fair article Building a Mystery: An Oral History of Lilith Fair, written by Jessica Hopper with former Consequence editor Sasha Geffen and Jenn Pelly. The film is directed by Ally Pankiw and pulls from more than 600 hours of archival footage, interviews, and stories from fans, festival organizers, and artists who played Lilith Fair.

Get Sarah McLachlan Tickets Here

The documentary includes interviews with McLachlan herself, Sheryl Crow, Erykah Badu, Bonnie Raitt, Brandi Carlile, Natalie Merchant, Mýa, Jewel, the Indigo Girls, Emmylou Harris, and Olivia Rodrigo. The latter will presumably be talking about the festival’s influence since she wasn’t even born yet when Lilith Fair was founded.

ABC News Studios, CBC Acquires ‘Lilith Fair: Build a Mystery’ Doc Ahead of Toronto Fest Bow (Exclusive)
Image
ABC News Studios and the CBC have picked up the U.S. rights to Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery, director Ally Pankiw’s feature documentary about Sarah McLachlan’s 1990s all-female music festival.

On the heels of a world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, Canada’s CBC network, which also backed the project, will air the indie doc on Sept. 17 as part of its The Passionate Eye series. Then, in the U.S., Hulu and Disney+ will stream the title from Sept. 21.

The film will also stream on Disney+ internationally later this year and will coincide with McLachlan launching her first studio album of new music in over a decade, Better Broken, on Sept. 19 and a Canadian concert tour.

“I’m so filled with pride and nostalgia watching this film,” McLachlan said about the Lilith Fair doc in a statement. “Ally and the team have beautifully captured the magic...

This Year in Music, We Listened to Women
Earlier this year, former Pitchfork editor Jessica Hopper asked women and other marginalized people in music to share the first time they were made to feel that they didn’t “count.” Here’s mine: Hearing my college boyfriend declare, “Wow, you actually know this band, I’m impressed,” every time I talked about the kind of music he didn’t think someone like me — black, female, SoCal-raised — would know about. The first time it happened was at a Sigur Rós concert. I started humming and air-drumming my fingers to the beat of a song — "Olsen Olsen" — he assumed I didn’t know, so he “complimented” me on it. I nodded and grinned awkwardly, but inside I felt like shit because the subtext of his voice was: (a) You’re a poseur, (b) this is my music, (c) you need my approval to validate your opinion. You may think I was...

Grimes’s Art Angels Is Superhero Music for Introverts
At the end of 2012, the year that her hypnotic breakout album Visions was released, the Canadian electro-pop musician Grimes, whose real name is Claire Boucher, gave an interview to the music critic Jessica Hopper. “I was interested in the Japanese archetype of a female protagonist who is very small and very cute and very physically powerful,” Boucher said, explaining the aesthetic that inspired her eminently Gif-able videos for “Genesis” and “Oblivion.” “You don’t see that archetype in America.” Earlier in the interview, Boucher had been asked to comment on the most controversial item for sale at her merch table, “pussy rings” — self-designed sets of plastic brass knuckles shaped like vaginas. She was dismayed about the supposed controversy and the fact that people still found this sort of imagery taboo, but she also seemed amused by unapologetic femininity’s surprisingly aggressive power to offend. “If you punched someone with the ring on,...

Röck Read Röund-Up
As I mentioned way back on this post from 2008, as much as I’ve tried to branch out, my tastes are pretty narrow when it comes to reading material.

I’d love to say that I’m broadly well-read when it comes to the more celebrated books of the day, but it’s just not true. If you’re looking to engage in a discussion about today’s most incisive fiction, you’re much better off speaking with my wife (who works in publishing) than one such as I. Truthfully, I’ve pretty much lost my taste for fiction almost entirely. Unless I have some vested interest (like, say, I know the author or it’s about something near and dear to me), I usually cannot muster up the interest to crack the binding.

As a result, whenever I’m perusing through the aisles of a bookstore (when I can still find one,...

Malia Obama Catches Chance The Rapper At Lollapalooza With Friends - And Secret Service
First Daughter Malia Obama attended Chicago music festival Lollapalooza on Sunday, staying to see closing act Chance the Rapper.

Malia Obama Attends Lollapalooza

Obama, 15, attended Lollapalooza with a trio of friends – two boys and a girl – and her Secret Service detail, reported the Chicago Sun Times. The teen’s music festival wear was a matching crop top and skirt combo with a sunflower pattern, and she styled her hair in a pair of braids.

While enjoying the music, Obama told fellow concertgoers that she wasn’t permitted to take pictures with anyone – but made an exception for one lucky fan. “J chillin with Malia Obama,” the girl tweeted along with the picture.

R. Kelly
Remember, R. Kelly Has Been Accused of Rape Dozens of Times
R. Kelly
R. Kelly is back in the news these days because he has a new album. But R. Kelly has also been accused of rape multiple times, which is something that either gets glossed over or ignored completely. These serious and credible allegations first made major news in 2000, when Chicago Sun-Times music critic Jim DeRogatis and courts reporter Abdon M. Pallasch wrote a story detailing Kelly's predatory behavior toward teenage girls, including his marriage to a 15-year-old Aaliyah. DeRogatis has continued to report on Kelly, and in a story today he spoke with the Village Voice's Jessica Hopper.DeRogatis: I think in the history of rock & roll, rock-music or pop-culture people misbehaving and behaving badly sexually with young women, rare is the amount of evidence compiled against anyone apart from R. Kelly. Dozens of girls — not one, not two, dozens — with harrowing lawsuits. The videotapes — and not...

Miley Cyrus’ ‘Bangerz’ Album Reviews: The Good, the Bad and the Twerky
Miley Cyrus attends City Of Hope Honors Halston CEO Ben Malka With Spirit Of Life Award - Red Carpet at Exchange LA on October 10, 2012 in Los Angeles, California.
Depending on whom you read, Miley Cyrus’ new album “Bangerz” is a “sometimes great,” “not very fun” “party grenade” that “just sounds like noise.” Whether any of that means it’s good or bad, we can’t quite tell. Let’s allow the experts to explain further. See video: Miley Cyrus, Sinead O’Connor Duet in Unofficial ‘Wrecking Ball’ Remix (Video) Jessica Hopper of Spin wrote, “The entertainment value of Cyrus’ work is more than simply typical pop pleasure: It is the slow-motion horror of watching toxic sleaze replace toxic purity.” She continued, “‘Bangerz’ is a precise album that flits...

The best of your comments on the latest films and music

Can we get the big controversy of the past week out of the way first? Riot Girl or Riot Grrrl? In the last F&M, Jessica Hopper's feature about the feminist punk movement's legacy referred to Riot Girl throughout. Jessica, an active (and sometimes controversial) participant in the original scene, had filed her copy with the Girl spelling, and many of you were not impressed.

"She may have been an active participant but anyone who read a music paper of that time referred to it as Riot Grrrl," LondonEye said. "It's the Guardian subs' job to know that or find it out and put the correct term down. Otherwise, it makes the Guardian look out of touch and stuffy." "Just because someone was an active participant, does that mean they get to choose or change the orthography? That's mildly ridiculous,...
