On the DVD commentary for Good Night, and Good Luck. (2005), George Clooney says that shortly after he met Grant Heslov in 1982, Heslov loaned Clooney $200.00 to buy his first set of headshots, and they have been friends ever since (and later writing and producing partners).

He and George Clooney founded the production company Smoke House after Clooney's production company Section Eight closed down.

Directed the short film Waiting for Woody (1998) about a Woody Allen fan. In 2006, Grant was competing for an Oscar in the same category as Woody Allen.
