The Space: 1999 TV series was released nearly 50 years ago, and a new documentary, titled The Eagle Has Landed, will celebrate the show’s anniversary.

Space: 1999 aired in first-run syndication for 48 episodes, between 1975 and 1977. The sci-fi series stars Martin Landau, Barbara Bain, Barry Morse, Catherine Schell, Tony Anholt, Prentis Hancock, Nick Tate, Zienia Merton, Anton Phillips, Suzanne Roquette, Clifton Jones, John Hug, Jeffery Kissoon, Yasuko Nagazumi, Sam Dastor, and Alibe Parsons. The story follows the inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha, a research center in a crater on the Earth's moon. Following a nuclear waste accident, the moon is ripped from Earth's orbit and sent hurling through space. While trying to find a new home planet, the center's crew encounters various alien civilizations, dystopian societies, and mind-bending phenomena.

The problem with writing a review for Army Of Doomsday (as I call it) at the time of transmission is that it's not the finished article. Back in 2006, most commentators would have summed up the big season finale as follows: Doctor and Rose find that ghosts have taken over Earth; Ghosts turn out to be Cybermen; Cybermen then use Earth as a battleground for their war against the Daleks; Doctor stops the war but at a price because Rose gets trapped in a parallel universe forever; Too much weeping and wailing at the end.

Which is a fair summary. Now fast forward a couple of years, and you'll realise that the review's not quite complete. So how's about now, you can change the bit about Rose getting trapped forever to – well, actually, Rose gets temporarily trapped because she comes back a couple of seasons later, even though The Doctor said...

Oh dear. Not even Tom Baker's Doctor can revive the terminal script malaise in this tinny adventure...

Hangovers. The older I get, the worse they get. When I wake up with a hangover (which is very rare these days, I hasten to add), it’s like someone’s been whacking me over the head with a shovel and leaving me with the inability to walk and talk in a straight line. It’s funny, in my 20s, I would have been able to deal with this, but now I’m accelerating well into the later part of my 30s, hangovers are now about as easy to handle as a swarm of bees.

"Hangover" was once used by Philip Hinchcliffe to describe the closing story of season 12, called Revenge Of The Cybermen. Originally, it wasn’t even meant to be the closer, but since Doctor Who was about to move...

March 2nd sees the Dalek War box set come to North America with the release of the two third Doctor stories Frontier in Space and Planet of the Daleks.

Starring Jon Pertwee as The Doctor and Katy Manning as Jo Grant, the set includes the recently restored episode three of Planet of the Daleks, now in colour for the first time in 30 years.

Frontier in Space features a commentary with Katy Manning, as well as producer Barry Letts and script editor Terrance Dicks.
