The inaugural Children’s & Family Emmys got underway at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles for a two-night gala to award the best in kid-friendly programming. JoJo Siwa hosted the Creative Arts ceremony on Night 1 and Jack McBrayer took over hosting duties on Night 2 with the rest of the categories.

On Night 1, it was Maya and the Three, Sneakerella and The Quest that took the most accolades with three trophies each.

Some of the first night’s highlights included a special performance by Xomg Pop!, the all-girl group created by Jess and Siwa. There was also an appearance from Martin P. Robinson, the legendary puppeteer who has been with Sesame Street since 1980, providing voices and puppeteering for Mr. Snuffleupagus, Telly Monster, Slimey the Worm, Martians and more. He also built, designed and performed the Audrey II puppets for Little Shop of Horrors.

“Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown,” Pedro Almodóvar’s hit dark comedy starring Carmen Maura and Fernando Guillén, will be adapted for an Apple TV Plus series.

Gina Rodriguez is attached to star as Pepa Marcos, Maura’s original role in the 1988 film, and Almodóvar is slated to executive produce the show via his El Deseo banner. Rodriguez, in addition to being cast as a lead, will also executive produce via her I Can and I Will Productions banner alongside partner Molly Breeskin.

The Hollywood Reporter, which was the first to report the news, was told by sources that the movie’s adaptation will be bilingual — a mix of English and Spanish. Currently, Almodóvar’s first English-language movie, “A Manual for Cleaning Women” starring Cate Blanchett, is in the early stages of development.

Fernando Guillén dies: Pedro Almodóvar Collaborator, Goya Award winner for Don Juan in Hell Fernando Guillén, a Spanish acting legend whose film, stage, and television career spanned close to six decades, died of cancer earlier today at a Madrid hospital. The Barcelona-born Guillén was 81 according to the daily El Mundo. (As per the IMDb, he was 80; born on Nov. 22, 1932.) Curiously, Fernando Guillén became more active in Spanish cinema in the last three decades. Among his movies are three directed by Pedro Almodóvar: Law of the Desire (1987), in which Guillén plays the police investigator; the Academy Award-nominated Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988), as Carmen Maura’s jerk ex-boyfriend; and the Oscar-winning All About My Mother (1999), as the Doctor featured in the play A Streetcar Named Desire starring Marisa Paredes as Blanche DuBois. The Last Circus is a Spanish language film that will be releasing in some theatres August 19th, thanks to Magnolia Pictures. This is a surreal film that puts a clown in the middle of the Spanish Civil War. The film seems to jump from frame to frame in the red band trailer for the film, while a sneering clown unloads clip after clip. This clown is not out to bring smiles but bloodshed and fans of the film can enjoy the North American poster for the film here. The graphic tells fans: "it's showtime!" And the show begins this summer.

Balada triste de trompeta or A Sad Trumpet Ballad is the movie that comes from Spanish director Alex de la Iglesia, and it’s already been described as the comedy that follows two circus clowns, but it’s definitely more than just a comedy….

Here’s the A Sad Trumpet Ballad synopsis: “…1937. The circus monkeys scream wildly inside their cage while, outside, men kill and die in another circus: the Spanish Civil War.

The Stupid Clown, recruited against his will by the Militia, ends up carrying out a bloodbath with a machete against the National soldiers while still wearing his costume.

You just know its all going to end badly, when a horror thriller gets a name like Tranquility Valley, and Spanish director Xavi Giménez is set to take us there next year.
