He has two younger brothers, G. Hanumantha Rao and G. Adhiseshagiri Rao, and two younger sisters, Aliveelumangamma and Lakshmi.

His son Mahesh Babu married Namrata Shirodkar ("Miss India" 1993) in 2005 after they fell in love when they acted together in the Telugu film "Vamsi" (1999).

His wife Vijayanirmala was his heroine in the maximum number of films (47 films), followed by Jayaprada in 43 films and Sridevi in 31 films.

Krishna has done 330 films by 2005 in a 40-year film career. His 100th film is Alluri Sitaramaraju, 200th film is Ennadu and 300th film is Teluguveera Levara.

He was awarded the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996 for his services to Telugu cinema.

He is credited with producing many technological firsts in Telugu cinema like first color movie (Tene Manasulu), first cinema-scope movie (Alluri Seetharama Raju), first 70mm movie (Simhasanam) and first DTS Movie (Telugu Veera Levara).

He is well known for introducing cowboy and James Bond style movies to the Telugu cinema.
