Better Call Saul, co-created by Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, is the prequel-sequel to AMC’s groundbreaking show Breaking Bad. Vince Gilligan and his writers introduced the “lawyer you can trust”, Saul Goodman, during season two of Breaking Bad. From the hustler Slippin’ Jimmy to straight-a lawyer Jimmy McGill, Bob Odenkirk’s role took him deep into the world of cartels and methamphetamine.
Better Call Saul was nominated 53 times for the Primetime Emmy Awards during its generational six-season run but tragically never won a single one, holding the record for most Emmy nominations without a win. Bob Odenkirk was initially reluctant to reprise his role as Saul Goodman, but his family convinced him otherwise.
Loyal Gilligan fans intently followed the universe and tuned in every week for their dose of Slippin’ Jimmy. They sat with mouths agape, as Saul Goodman used his wit to charm his way out of the most dire situations.

Better Call Sauland Breaking Bad star Bob Odenkirk explains where exactly his iconic character ended up.
Speaking to Cbr's Grae Drake during the Nobody 2 press tour, Odenkirk gave his take on where he believes his fan-favorite character of Jimmy McGill, aka Saul Goodman, ended up after the series' end. When asked about how Jimmy is likely handling prison, Odenkirk responded, "He's got some he's got some power there, because he's a lawyer and he can talk to people, and he has a reputation. I think he's as doing as good as you can do in prison. Yeah. I think."

Better Call Saul Star Bob Odenkirk Reveals On-Set Heart Attack That Almost Killed Him—“I Wasn’t Breathing!” ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Bob Odenkirk didn’t just collapse on the Better Call Saul set. He flatlined. In what could’ve been his final moment, the Emmy-nominated actor went down during a regular shoot day in New Mexico and by his own words, if not for his crew’s fast hands and clear heads, he’d be gone.
“I went down on one knee, and then I went all the way down. I guess I said, ‘I don’t feel very good,’” Odenkirk recalled in an interview with Radio Times (reported by The Guardian). What followed was chaos, CPR, and three defibrillator shocks. The show’s health officer had to run to her car to grab a defibrillator while the crew jumped in, performing CPR on him before the shocks brought him back.

Throughout his career, Al Pacino received nine Academy Award nominations and won one in 1992 with Scent of a Woman. However, considering how prolific the actor has been, with over 60 acting credits, not all of his works were critical hits.
For example, his latest release, The Ritual, debuted with his lowest score ever: an abysmal 0%. The film is a possession horror that is based on the same story as the critically acclaimed The Exorcist. After debuting with 0%, the audiences disagreed that the film deserved such a negative score and gave it a positive 62% approval on Rotten Tomatoes.
Since its release, when The Ritual debuted with 0% out of 26 reviews, the film's score has been updated. At the time of writing, the possession horror has a 6% approval rate out of 63 reviews, and it no longer serves as Al Pacino's lowest-scored film based on the critics' scores, but it's now his fourth-lowest score.

Not since Paul Schrader’s ill-starred “Exorcist” entry “Dominion” in 2004 has an exorcism-centric thriller taken itself quite so seriously as “The Ritual.” Based on a real-life case, like director David Midell’s prior “The Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain,” this more fantastical drama is a relatively restrained effort less interested in standard horror effects than the events’ psychological impact on their participants. Nonetheless, its integrity and able performers only do so much to elevate a reluctant genre movie that emerges as rather dreary — not unlike “Dominion,” albeit minus theological discussions. With Al Pacino and Dan Stevens topping the cast, XYZ Films’ release should lure in some genre fans. Still, their disappointment may be salved only by the thought that this is a definite genre improvement over the abysmal “The Exorcist: Believer” from two years ago.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. A young priest who’s recently suffered a personal tragedy and is struggling with issues of faith teams up with an older, veteran priest to perform an exorcism on a young girl who’s been exhibiting disturbing signs of demonic possession. The younger priest is skeptical, believing that her manifestations could be the result of psychological disturbance. The older priest is resolute, determined to once more do battle with the Devil.
No, I mean it, stop me.
Because clearly no one has stopped The Ritual, yet another attempt that tries and fails to exorcise our memories of the classic, gold standard of the genre, William Friedkin’s 1973 The Exorcist. As if to compensate for the fact that their film is trafficking in the same sort of hokiness as such recent, similarly themed efforts as The Pope’s Exorcist and The Exorcism (both starring Russell Crowe,...

"The true story that inspired The Exorcist." That's the tagline for Al Pacino and Dan Stevens' new horror film The Ritual that hits theaters this Friday, but if its Rotten Tomatoes score is any indication of things, it seems the movie itself is in need of an exorcism. Debuting to a brutal 0% score, The Ritual is being blasted by critics for being "cheaply made" and not accomplishing "much of anything."
"If you've ever wondered what a painfully boring, generic exorcism narrative filmed in the style of The Office would be like, The Ritual is the answer," says Joseph Robinson from Fish Jelly Films. Man, that's tough. Directed by David Midell, Mark Hanson from Slate Magazine notes that the film is "a special kind of hell," while Jacob Oller from Av Club adds:

If Hollywood is to be believed, life as a Catholic priest at the turn of the 20th century involved spending 75 percent of your time sitting in your office while people brought troubled women to you and asked you to determine if all of their problems could be explained away by demonic possession. So begins “The Ritual,” David Middel’s excruciatingly generic horror effort that forces us to wonder whether the exorcism subgenre has any interesting juice left squeezing out of it — and then offers little in terms of reassurance on that front.
When Emma Schmidt (Abigail Cowen) begins experiencing night terrors, crippling fears of holy objects, and other signs of extreme distress, the clergymen in Earling, Iowa have differing opinions about how to treat her afflictions. David Midell’s The Ritual, which is based on the true story of Emma Schmidt’s 1928 exorcism in Earling, Iowa, stresses in a text coda before the end credits that its central event is the most documented of its kind. But with the film playing out in such mind-numbingly derivative fashion, it seems less like Midell and co-writer Enrico Natale studied the documents of this case than they did the hoary tropes of this specific subgenre of horror film. Regardless of its historical point of origin, the film simply ends up joining the ranks of countless, tedious Exorcist wannabes before it, a robust trend that’s become its own special kind of hell.
After an unintentionally funny “so you’re wondering how I got here” mid-exorcism cold open, The Ritual properly introduces Father Joseph Steiger (Dan Stevens), who’s struggling with his faith and with leading his parish in the...

It’s surprising that Mike Flanagan has yet to helm a found footage film. Why do I say that? I say that because the Oculus director is a staunch supporter of the aforementioned filmmaking technique and has historically praised plenty of features shot in the Pov filmmaking style. Flanagan keeps a running Letterboxd list that features his favorite horror films, and a surprising number of the selections are found footage. Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum and The Outwaters are two that come to mind right off the top of my head. Another such example is Daniel Stamm’s somewhat divisive found footage horror The Last Exorcism.
That’s right, Mike Flanagan counts The Last Exorcism among his favorite horror films of all time. Perhaps he digs the unorthodox approach to exorcism cinema that eschews convention and puts the viewer right in the heart of the action. Or perhaps, like this critic, he...

Looking for a supernatural thrill with a dash of creepy? Well, The Last Exorcism and its sequel The Last Exorcism Part II might just be what you need. Both movies dive into the world of demons, but with totally different vibes. The first one is all about that found-footage, Blair Witch-style storytelling, where we watch an evangelical minister, Cotton Marcus, try to pull off a fake exorcism, until things take a terrifying turn.
The sequel? Not so much with the shaky cam; instead, it gets more into traditional horror territory, with Nell Sweetzer trying to rebuild her life after surviving that horrific exorcism, but of course, that demon Abalam just won’t let her go. It might not have the same massive buzz as the first film, but if you’re into demons, possession, and psychological thrills, it’s still worth the watch.

Jimmy McGill wasn’t exactly a saint, but he wasn’t always a complete disaster either. Back in the early days of Better Call Saul, he actually tried to do some good, flexing his legal smarts to help people who truly needed it. But in true Vince Gilligan fashion, even Jimmy’s rare moments of decency weren’t allowed to shine for long.

Few writers are as capable and competent as Vince Gilligan. Creating a show that breaks records and ingrains itself into every aspect of Hollywood is no easy feat. Vince Gilligan created many nuanced characters for his show Better Call Saul and these complex characters came with a lot of grey shade. Howard Hamlin, the CEO of Hhm, was one such character whom viewers initially considered one of the antagonists of the series. However, as the series progressed, Howard showed us that he was more than the smug and privileged lawyer he was portrayed to be.

Fans came to realize that he was just another ordinary human, largely misunderstood by both people on and off-screen. Howard’s final fate was to become a pawn in the destructive scheme of Jimmy McGill and Kim Wexler. At the end of all the scheming against him, not only was the innocent Howard’s reputation ruined but he was also killed off mercilessly.

Nowadays, it is not too uncommon for popular TV programs to inspire spinoff shows. These new series, though they do have self-contained stories of their own, typically feature characters or settings that appeared in the previous shows that inspired them. What is rarer, however, is when the spinoff manages to maintain the same level of quality as the original. Far too often, TV networks merely try to capitalize on the preexisting popularity of a character or setting, and fail to deliver entertaining stories of their own.
Fortunately, some of the best spinoffs do manage to knock it out of the park, using preexisting characters but still managing to create inventive new storylines that captivate their viewers in new, exciting ways. These shows not only stand out as excellent programs on their own, but even manage to attract new viewers to the original series as well. While there will always be...

Breaking Bad is considered one of the greatest television series of all time, and miraculously, creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould were able to have lightning strike twice with their spinoff hit show, Better Call Saul. Following the life of criminal lawyer Jimmy McGill before he donned the flashy suits and questionable legal choices, Bob Odenkirk stars alongside several other returning cast members in a show that made the wider Breaking Bad story even more incredible. Some fans argue that Better Call Saul is even better than the original show. But some viewers new to the Breaking Bad universe aren't sure whether they should start with the prequel, which is chronologically first, or the original series, which came out first.
Even though Better Call Saul is a follow-up to the original masterpiece, its not hard for new fans to enjoy the show. Its brilliant storytelling, realistically layered characters, and gray...

The Breaking Bad universe has some unforgettable and gut-punching moments, but no one could’ve predicted what Better Call Saul would pull off with the death of one particular character. Bob Odenkirk’s journey as the morally ambiguous lawyer was addictive for fans, but it was the sudden emotional twists that set the series apart.

There are a lot of crime shows which don't have time for relationship drama, but some great shows have been able to balance these two themes. Any genre of TV show can have a dash of romance added to it, since relationships are a near-universal human experience that so often reflects who people are. Crime shows usually have romantic subplots to humanize their characters and to raise the emotional stakes.
The best crime shows can make room for romance without either letting it crowd out the action or making it seem unnecessary. Romance can be used as comic relief in more lighthearted shows like Only Murders in the Building and Castle, but it can also reflect dark truths about the characters, just as it does in Justified and Fargo. For all these reasons and more, there's no shortage of crime shows with romance running through them.

Just because character deaths on serialized television shows are inevitable, it doesn't mean they don't sting some of the most iconic moments in TV history center around the sudden death of a beloved character. Even when a hated villainous character is axed, the shock value echoes throughout the remainder of the series. As Better Call Saul headed towards its finale, audiences knew something had to give, with the Breaking Bad prequel spin-off by Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould teasing a fateful moment in the morally ambiguous life of Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) as he morphed into the titular shady attorney by getting mixed up in cartel-related activity with his wife and conflicted professional partner, Kim Wexler (Rhea Seehorn). Someone had to pay the price, but few could have predicted that it would be Howard Hamlin (Patrick Fabian), Jimmy's upstanding foil who would suffer the most tragic demise in the Breaking Bad universe,...

After a life of crime that resulted in Breaking Bad's Jimmy McGill (aka Saul Goodman) going on the run, the former attorney wound up managing a Cinnabon in Omaha using the alias "Gene." However, the tasty pastry retailer was not the original choice for where Saul would end up with his new identity.
On social media, Better Call Saul co-creator Peter Gould shared an image from an early draft of the script for the penultimate episode of Breaking Bad. This was the episode that established that Saul (Bob Odenkirk) would be managing a Cinnabon after getting a new identity from the "Disappearer" (Robert Forster). The early draft of the script reveals that Saul's dialogue was altered slightly, as he was originally written to tell Walter White (Bryan Cranston) that he would be "managing a Hot Topic in Omaha."

The Way We Speak explores big ideas through intimate drama. Set at an academic conference, it pairs two rising thinkers in a debate on faith versus reason. Patrick Fabian stars as Simon, a writer challenging religion. But his focus shifts when his friend falls ill and an unexpected opponent replaces him—Sarah, played by Kailey Rhodes.
Simon’s long anticipated moment in the spotlight collides with personal crises. His wife Claire, wonderfully portrayed by Diana Coconubo, battles cancer even as she supports Simon. Tensions mount between the couple as Simon grapples with career pressures and Claire’s illness.
Meanwhile, Sarah presents an intriguing challenge. Far from a stock character, she proves a cunning debater hiding complexity. The sparks flying between her and Simon hint at deeper forces shaping their clash of ideas.
Yet the debates themselves take a back seat to the characters’ humanity. Director Ian Ebright spotlights how even...

Howard Hamlin is not a villain in Better Call Saul, just an antagonist to Jimmy and Kim. Despite being an imperfect boss, Howard never intentionally does anything morally wrong in the series. Viewers' perception of Howard as a villain is influenced by Better Call Saul being told from Jimmy's and Kim's perspectives.
Patrick Fabian recently denied that his Better Call Saul character is a villain, and the actor is right to defend Howard Hamlin from such accusations. Howard isn't the most likable character in the Breaking Bad prequel, but he's far from intentionally cruel or evil. Despite this, it seems viewers are labeling Howard as villainous because he's an antagonist to Jimmy McGill and Kim Wexler. Given Breaking Bad's focus on morally dubious leads, it's hard to equate antagonists with all-out villains in the AMC franchise.

We spoke to Patrick Fabian amid the release of The Way We Speak, an acclaimed new film that showcases Fabian's leading-man chops and reminds us of his vast talents. If Fabian looks familiar, that's not just because of his recent, awards-caliber turn across six seasons of AMC's hit series Better Call Saul. He's guest-starred on just about every hit show you've binged in the past couple of decades, from The Morning Show to Grey's Anatomy, which begs the question: Which has been his favorite guest-starring appearance out of the long list?
"Well, I have to be honest with my response. I've been asked that question before, and the first thing that comes to my mind is Xena: Warrior Princess, played by Lucy Lawless," Fabian tells MovieWeb. "It was a wonderful gig. I got flown down to New Zealand, I got to wear leather chaps, and a pirate shirt.

Patrick Fabian explains how Howard Hamlin in Better Call Saul isn't a villain, but a consistent character influenced by those around him. Howard's loyalty and pursuit of improvement make his character complex and tragic. Despite being an antagonist, Howard's evolution makes him less of a bad guy by the end.
Better Call Saul star Patrick Fabian has defended his character, Howard Hamlin, from being perceived as a villain, explaining how he views the role in contrast to his antagonistic label. Out of all the characters in Better Call Saul, Howard is Jimmy's greatest legal rival, the pair constantly butting heads as the main character slowly evolves into his Saul Goodman persona. However, things come to a climax in season 6, episode 8, when a scheme pulled by Jimmy and Kim inadvertently results in the lawyer getting shot in the head by Lalo.

Rock 'n' roll isn't dead, and neither are good ol' fashioned debates. The latest presidential one may have been a bust and led to our current Head of State withdrawing from the upcoming election, but in general, a juicy back-and-forth about hot topics like politics or, say, religion have always reliably stirred the pot in any setting. If anything, 'debate bro' culture has gone a bit too far, making social media even more toxic than before. On the big screen, though, debates can make for gripping drama. Rhea Seehorn's Kim Wexler is one of the most beloved characters of the Breaking Bad universe. Looking back at the franchise, Seehorn shared the reaction she had to learning about the backlash that had been leveled against Anna Gunn and her character, Skyler White, during Breaking Bad's run.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Seehorn revealed how she wasn't caught up on Breaking Bad when she landed the role of Kim Wexler for Better Call Saul. To prepare for joining the franchise, Seehorn watched all of Breaking Bad, and it was during that time that she learned about all of the vitriol that had been directed at Skyler. For her part, Seehorn thought Gunn was "brilliant" in the role, and she also felt that the Skyler character acted how any person would upon learning that a spouse was doing the things Bryan Cranston's Walter White had been.

"Tide's coming in..." Gravitas has revealed an official trailer for an indie drama titled The Way We Speak, marking the feature directorial debut of indie filmmaker Ian Ebright. It premiered at the 2024 Florida Film Festival a few months ago, also screening at the RiverRun and Julien Dubuque Film Festivals. The Way We Speak is a modern cautionary tale. The synopsis is rather vague: An up-and-coming writer refuses to leave the spotlight when his best friend and debate opponent suffers cardiac arrest, leading to an obsession over his new opponent. Described in reviews as "a rich character study that centers around obsession, insecurity, and jealousy." Patrick Fabian stars as Simon, along with Diana Coconubo, Kailey Rhodes, Ayanna Berkshire, Lowell Deo, Ricco Distefano, and Reed Diamond. This very moody, nearly dialogue-free trailer is a clever cover-up for the film's religious undercurrents - it's about how an atheist becomes insecure about his young,...

Two years after Better Call Saul came to an end, fans are still discussing the events of the series finale. Kim Wexler actor Rhea Seehorn is happy with how it all turned out, though she was a bit bummed about one moment getting cut.
For six seasons, Seehorn brought the role of Kim Wexler to life, turning the character into a Breaking Bad franchise fan favorite. At the end of the show, Seehorn's Kim reunites with Bob Odenkirk's Jimmy McGill, but their lives will forever be different, given how the latter is left facing decades of prison time. There was one particular moment from the characters' reunion that didn't make the final cut, and while that disappointed Seehorn at the time, she came to realize that letting it go was the right creative decision.

Shows like The Bear, Beef, and Succession dominated the evening, winning most of the awards and leaving other series empty-handed. Ted Lasso and Better Call Saul were among the snubbed shows, with both series and their actors failing to win any awards, much to the disappointment of their fans.
