Close friend of director George Cukor, who frequently cast Evans in his films, often uncredited. Greta Garbo asked Cukor, on the set of Margherita Gauthier (1936), "Who is that big man, and what part is he playing?" Cukor replied, "He's playing the part of a friend who needs a job." He appeared in ten of Cukor's films, counting Evans' appearance in Cukor's uncredited work on Brama di vivere (1956).

Solidly-built British comic actor with cabaret and music hall experience. Came to the U.S. to act on Broadway in the 1930's, then segued into movies as stately butlers or affluent businessmen. As a sideline to his acting career, he operated a successful art gallery in Hollywood.

Brother of the famous London theatrical agent Laurence (or Laurie) Evans, who counted Laurence Olivier, James Mason and Ralph Richardson among his clients.
