Netflix's Slow Horses Replacement Show Debuts With Very Strong Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Netflix's new political thriller series has won over the critics. Just one day after its release, Hostage boasts a stunning score.

The political limited series Hostage debuted with a thrilling score of 86% from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes. The score comes out of 22 reviews, and has already received a Certified Fresh badge. Hostage debuted on Netflix on Aug. 21, and it doesn't feature an audience score at the time of writing.

‘Hostage’ Review: Julie Delpy and Suranne Jones Deserve Better Than Netflix’s Generic Political Thriller
Image
When the derivative Netflix spy drama Treason premiered in 2022, I used the Charlie Cox vehicle as an excuse to write a small treatise on the institutional misuse and overuse of in medias res openings.

I’ve occasionally needed to reference what I wrote, but I’ve never been able to consistently remember what show I pegged the analysis to. Treason has a wholly generic title, and while it has an Ok cast and the recognizable structure of a television series, it’s among the more forgettable dramas of an era that has had more than a few forgettable dramas. There are countless shows, some quite successful, that are far worse than whatever that Charlie Cox show was called, but few that have dissipated into the ether as thoroughly.

Competition comes in the form of the new Netflix drama Hostage. Like that Charlie Cox thing, it’s a London-set five-parter with an instantly negligible title,...

‘Bridgerton’ Star Charithra Chandran & Munya Chawawa Cast In Channel 4 Comedy ‘Schooled’
Image
Exclusive: Munya Chawawa and Bridgerton star Charithra Chandran have been cast in Schooled, the Channel 4 comedy inspired by creator Delia-René Donaldson’s experience in pastoral care at a London academy.

Chawawa is playing ‘T’ alongside lead Shiloh Coke (Cheaters), who stars as Kayleigh Clarke – a newly appointed Head of Year 10 with no formal teaching background and very little patience for unruly teens. The pair are joined by Judi Love (Taskmaster), Michelle de Swarte (Spent) and Chandran, who play Anita, Naomi and Lara respectively. Rebecca Humphries (The Crown), Alex Bhat (Gentleman Jack) and Elliot Barnes-Worrell (Black Mirror) are also aboard.

Landing Chawawa and Chandran is a coup. Chawawa is a social media star and comedian who has been working with Channel 4 more of late and is about to deliver the Edinburgh TV Festival Alternative MacTaggart lecture. Chandran broke out opposite Jonathan Bailey and Simone Ashley playing Edwina Sharma in Netflix...

Netflix Thriller 'Hostage' Promises to "Blow Audiences Away"
Image
Netflix is no stranger to producing great thrillers, and it seems like the streamer might have another big hit on its hands later this summer when Hostage makes its premiere in August. Created by Matt Charman (Bridge of Spies), the five-episode limited series stars award-winning actresses Suranne Jones (Gentleman Jack) and Julie Delpy (Before Sunrise) as two heads of state, and sounds like it could be ripped from today's headlines.

Premiering on August 21, Hostage features Jones as British prime minister Abigail Dalton, and Delpy as French president Vivienne Toussaint. Jones also serves as an executive producer on the project, which promises to deliver a political thriller that will have viewers on the edge of their seats. The premise may seem a bit familiar given recent hits like Prime Video's G20 and Netflix's Zero Day, but it still sounds like it's going to be a worthy addition to the genre:

Jason Statham Played A Small Part In One Of The World's Biggest Video Game Franchises
Image
No, the headline of this article is not a reference to Jason Statham's leading role in Uwe Boll's roundly mocked film "In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale," one of the most derided of all video game adaptations. Instead, this refers to some voice work that he did early in his career. It seems that Statham played a minor voice role in the very first "Call of Duty" video game in 2003. "Call of Duty" was a military-based shooter game set during World War II, released on the PC, and eventually for the XBox 360, and the PlayStation 3. It was a big hit in the early 2000s, and spawned a massive franchise that is still going strong to this day. There are five games in the original World War II continuity, eight games in the "Modern Warfare" spinoff series (set in the present), seven games in the "Black Ops" spinoff,...

Eve Best and Stockard Channing are adding more star quality to the cast of Suranne Jones’ upcoming three-part Itvx drama Maryland.

Created by Jones and Trollied creator Anne-Marie O’Connor, Maryland focuses on the relationship between two sisters, down-to-earth mother of two Becca (Jones) and disciplined high-flyer Rosaline (Best) who have been driven apart by complex family dynamics.

They travel to the Isle of Man to repatriate the body of their mother, Mary, leaving their father Richard at home in Manchester. Confined on the island, they discover shocking information about their mother and find it impossible to escape the ripple effect of her secrets and lies.

Best is currently enjoying strong reviews for her role as dragon rider Rhaenys Targaryen in HBO’s House of the Dragon.

Happy Valley: First Look at the Third and Final Season
Sarah Lancashire in Happy Valley (2014)
We've known for a while now that Happy Valley will return for a third and final season on AMC+ and Acorn TV.

We now have our first look, courtesy of some photos.

In this final season of the multi-bafta award-winning BBC drama created by one of the UK’s most celebrated and critically acclaimed screenwriters, Sally Wainwright (Gentleman Jack), Sarah Lancashire (Julia) returns to her iconic role of Sergeant Catherine Cawood for six new episodes.

Also returning are James Norton (The Nevers) as Catherine’s nemesis, the murderer and sex-offender Tommy Lee Royce; Siobhan Finneran (Downton Abbey) as Catherine’s sister, the recovering addict Clare Cartwright, and Rhys Connah as Catherine’s sixteen-year-old grandson Ryan, eight years after he first played the role as a young boy.

In the first-look photos, Catherine is pictured with a bloodied nose in the aftermath of a police raid, while Tommy Lee Royce (James...

Emmy Category Analysis: Period Costumes
Image
by Cláudio Alves

Where is The Gilded Age with its cornucopia of tacky bustle gowns, a good portion of which are copied from fashion plates, museum pieces, and period portraits? Where are Gentleman Jack's precise visions of Romantic dress, queer aesthetics seen through a 19th-century lens? Where are the comedic stylizations of Our Flag Means Death or Julia's purviews of a television icon of days gone by? Where's the love for Schmigadoon!'s cavalcade of hot men in tight pants or Pachinko's cultural delineations rendered in a rainbow of beautiful textiles?

Though the period category for the 2022 Emmys is the most solid of the three costume lineups (we previously discussed contemporary and fantasy fashions), many inspired period possibilities were ignored in favor of repeat contenders and curious flops...

‘Aew: Dark’ Review (Aug 16th 2022)
Image
Another week, another episode of Aew: Dark which emanates from Aew Universal once again. We’ve got Taz and Excalibur on commentary as usual so let’s get to the action!

Match #1: Ari Daivari def. Fuego Del Sol

My Thoughts: Loved this match. Fuego looked like a badass for once, taking it to Ari – who really took a beating in this match, the antithesis of how we’ve seen him recently in Aew. Eventually Ari cheated to get the win as all heels do. Surprisingly great match to open Dark.

My Score: 3.5 out of 5 Match #2: Willow Nightingale def. Robyn Renegade

My Thoughts: What’s not to love about a match featuring Willow Nightingale? Imho, she needs to be signed with a major promotion Asap, she’s got the personality, the charisma and the skills and every crowd she wrestles in front of Loves her! Plus the Renegade twins...

‘Impact Wrestling: Emergence 2022’ PPV Review
Image
We’ve only just had Against All Odds, but here comes Impact Wrestling with their next pay-per-view, Emergence, which aired Live from Cicero Stadium in Chicago, Illinois this past Friday. Let’s see what this show has to offer!

Countdown to Emergence: Match #1: Digital Media Championship – Brian Myers def. Bhupinder Gujjar The following is courtesy of impactwrestling.com:

Bhupinder Gujjar receives his long-awaited Digital Media Title opportunity against Brian Myers! Before the match begins, Myers has some harsh words for Chicago. Gujjar is about to hit the Gargoyle Spear in the early going but Myers retreats to the outside. Myers uses the middle rope for a low blow, then takes control with a flurry of strikes. Myers hits the Implant Ddt for two. Myers sends Gujjar crashing into the exposed turnbuckle, then rolls him up to retain the title!

My Score: 2 out of 5 Match #2: Knockouts World Tag Team...

‘Impact Wrestling’ Review (Aug 11th 2022)
Image
Welcome to this week’s review of Impact Wrestling, which this week opens with a Before the Impact match that saw Steve Maclin defeat Crazzy Steve. Let’s get into the review…

Match #1: Karl Anderson def. Kenny King The following is courtesy of impactwrestling.com:

Just 24 hours before the high-stakes showdown between Honor No More and Bullet Club, Karl Anderson and Kenny King look to fire the first shot in singles competition! The members of both factions are banned from ringside for this match. King drapes the leg of Anderson across the rope to gain the early advantage. King targets the now-injured left leg as he begins to wear Anderson down. Anderson creates separation with a Dragon Screw leg whip, then fights back with a series of clotheslines. Anderson hits a single leg dropkick for two. Anderson counters the Royal Flush into the Gun Stun to win!

‘Gentleman Jack’ Stars, BBC React To Show’s Cancellation: “This Show Has Brought So Many Together”
Image
Suranne Jones and Sophie Rundle, stars of HBO’s Gentleman Jack, are sharing their thoughts on HBO’s cancellation of Sally Wainright’s period drama after two seasons.

A co-production with BBC, Gentleman Jack starred Jones as Anne Lister and Rundle as Ann Walker. In Season 2 of the series, from Lookout Point, Anne and Ann set up home together at Shibden Hall as wife and wife, determined to combine their estates and become a power couple.

“While it is sad news Gentleman Jack will not be renewed, this show has brought so many together, enabled people to share their stories, brought joy, emotion and creativity, and gave me a real connection to you as its audience,” Jones said in an Instagram post accompanied by an entertaining blooper reel. “Anne Lister now has a statue in the Piece Hall. There is a Blue plaque in Holy Trinity church yard celebrating Anne...

Gentleman Jack Cancelled After 2 Seasons — Read HBO's Statement
Image
Anne and Ann’s love story won’t be continuing at HBO. The network has axed period drama Gentleman Jack after two seasons, our sister site Deadline reports.

“HBO will not be moving forward with a third season of Gentleman Jack,” the network said in a statement. “When we began this journey more than five years ago, we knew the series’ creator Sally Wainwright had a uniquely compelling vision, and it’s been tremendously gratifying to see how Anne Lister’s journey has resonated with viewers. We are incredibly grateful to Sally, to the impeccable Suranne Jones and Sophie Rundle,...

Ovation TV Boards Viaplay & A+E Networks International Nordic Noir Spy Thriller Series ‘Red Election’
Image
Exclusive: Ovation TV has voted in favor of Nordic noir spy thriller series Red Election.

The arts network has taken linear U.S. rights to the ten-part drama after a deal with A+E Networks International, which co-produces the series with streamer Viaplay and Swedish drama producer Mopar Studios. It will debut the series on August 6 at 7pm Et and run weekly through to October 8.

Episodes will also be available on demand and through the Ovation Now app.

The series — which stars Stephen Dillane (Game of Thrones), Lydia Leonard (Gentleman Jack), and James D’Arcy (Homeland) — is set to the backdrop of simmering international tensions, as a newly elected British Prime Minister announces a referendum to decide the future of Scotland in the UK, as a shady foreign power seeks to influence the election from behind the scenes to unleash agents of chaos and upset the world order. Victoria Carmen Sonne,...

‘Aew: Dark’ Review (Mar 1st 2022)
Image
It’s time for this week’s review of Aew: Dark, which once again comes from Aew: Universal. I’m always surprised by how much difference there is between Aew’s smaller Universal Studios audience and Impact’s small weekly audience. Aew still seem to make it sound like the crowd is into the action even when they’re quiet.

Match #1: Lee Johnson vs. Darian Bengston

My Thoughts: This was decidedly average. The only thing that stood out about this match was the fact the crowd were behind Darian Bengston more than they were Lee Johnson. Maybe Big Shotty needs a reboot to get over with the fans?

My Score: 1.5 out of 5 Match #2: Sonny Kiss def. Ashton Starr

My Thoughts: This was an example of the Aew quasi-squash match, with Starr given just enough offence to not make this a complete squash match for Sonny Kiss. Speaking of which,...

‘Aew Dark: Elevation – Episode 12’ Review
Image
Welcome to this weeks review of Aew Dark: Elevation, which is the first (I think) to be filmed in front of a huge live crowd and deals with the fallout from this past weekend’s Double or Nothing. And in a real shocker… this episode is not even Ninety minutes long!

Match #1: The Acclaimed – Max Caster and Anthony Bowens def. Brent & Brandon Tate

My Thoughts: The Acclaimed delivered yet another great match against twins, and current Ovw Tag Team Champions Brent & Brandon Tate – how displayed just why they are champs. Though it was enough for the fluid tag team work of Bowens and Caster.

My Score: 2 out of 5 Match #2: Leyla Hirsch def. Robyn Renegade

My Thoughts: So, so glad that the live crowd at the taping of this match popped for Leyla Hirsch – I’ve always said she’s one of my favourite Aew stars and it now...

‘Aew: Dark’ Review (Mar 6th 2021)
Image
We’ve got an extra pre-Revolution episode of Aew: Dark this week – ninty minutes of PPV teases and matches that (I suspect) will make no sense follwing the PPV… Anyone else think the same? Everytime there’s a “game-changing” Aew pay per view it seems we get an extra Dark. Now is that as a lead in for the PPV or… as I suspect… are they burning off pre-taped matches that will be effected by the outcome of said PPV? Whatever the case its more Aew in a week and I’m here for it!

Match #1: The Natural Nightmares def. Peter Avalon and Cesar Bononi

Bononi got to showcase his strength in this match, even if it ran a mere (and swift) four plus minutes. Nothing really stood out in this opener making this a very cool start to a Dark that should’ve been hot from the get-go.

Match #1: Matt Hardy & “Hangman” Adam Page def. The Hybrid2—Angelico & Jack Evans The following is courtesy of allelitewrestling.com:

TH2 jumped Hardy and Page before the bell rang, taking the fight directly to their opponents. Page returned fired, chopping away at Evans and then he tagged in Hardy.

Match #1: Adam Page & The Dark Order def. TH2—Angelico & Jack Evans, and Chaos Project—Luther & Serpentico! The following is courtesy of allelitewrestling.com:

“This was really underhanded by Chaos Project. The Dark Order didn’t even get a chance to cut the birthday cake,” said Tony Schiavone. Back in the ring, Luther hit a butterfly suplex on John Silver for a near fall. Jack Evans tagged in and Luther slammed Evans on Silver! Luther bulldogged Angelico—his own partner in the match—onto Silver for a near fall. “That’s some great team work,...

Hobbs followed up with two consecutive clotheslines and then a shoulder tackle. He powerslammed Cage for a near fall.
