After Edwards died in 1971, nearly broke and alone, Walt Disney Productions, remembering his many contributions to their films over the years, paid for his funeral.

He has appeared in four films that have been selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant: Via col vento (1939), La signora del venerdì (1940), Pinocchio (1940) and Dumbo: L'elefante volante (1941).

His voice can be heard in Via col vento (1939) as the voice of the soldier who tells Scarlett O'Hara about his brother Jeff.

Cliff Edwards does not appear in the film, but his singing voice is heard during the "Harlem Madness" number in the 1930 MGM picture "They Learned About Women".

His first wife Gertrude Ryrholm passed away just 2 months after him.
