Even change-averse Hank Hill would approve of this update: Billy Strings and his band have put their own spin on the King of the Hill theme song for the show’s Hulu revival. The new 10-episode season — its 14th — is streaming now on Hulu and catches up with the Hill family in a vastly different America.

Strings’ bluegrass makeover of the song, originally recorded by the Refreshments and titled “Yahoos and Triangles,” plays over the show’s closing credits. Strings gets an assist from his band, along with some additional musicians.

Man, I tell you what, man, that dang ol’ Billy Strings, he done went and made himself a bluegrass version of that theme song, man, talkin’ ’bout that “Yahoos and Triangles,” you know, man, from that show, man, dang ol’ King of the Hill.

Strings has covered the theme song a number of times over the years, but this recorded version is his first official contribution to the show, appearing over the end credits during a new episode of the surprisingly good Hulu revival. The instrumentation is crisp and refreshing, but the clear highlight is Strings’ ripping guitar solo. As Jam Base reports, the track includes contributions from Strings’ regular band, including mandolinist Jarrod Walker, banjo player Billy Failing, bassist Royal Masat, fiddler Alex Hargreaves, drummer Jamie Dick, banjoist Russ Carson, and fiddler Billy Contreras.

Hulu brought back King of the Hill for Season 14 on August 4th.

Sierra Ferrell was the big winner at the 2024 Americana Honors & Awards, held Wednesday night at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. The old-timey West Virginia songwriter took home Artist of the Year and Album of the Year for her LP Trail of Flowers.

Produced by Eddie Spear and Gary Paczosa, Trail of Flowers showcases Ferrell’s distinctly country and folk songs, like “Dollar Bill Bar” and “American Dreaming.” It beat out projects by Brandy Clark, Hurray for the Riff Raff, Tyler Childers, and Jason Isbell.

Tyler Childers and Sierra Ferrell are the leading nominees at the 2024 Americana Honors & Awards. The Appalachia-reared musicians each scored three nominations — including Album, Song, and Artist of the Year — when the categories were announced on Tuesday at the National Museum of African American Music in Nashville.

Childers, a Kentucky native, is nominated for his album Rustin’ in the Rain and the song “In Your Love,” while the West Virginia native Ferrell is recognized for the album Trail of Flowers and the song “American Dreaming.”
