Met Actress Ronne Troup on the set of "SWAT" filming the episode "Death Carrier". Married Ronne, had two daughters, Bridget and Jamie. Now divorced.

James was a competitive hang glider pilot throughout the '70s. He turned to flying ultralight aircraft in the 1980s. In 1983 he became the Editor of Ultralight Aircraft Magazine. Over the next 30 years he was active writing, shooting and editing, and became a top aviation photographer and writer. James wrote thousands of articles for national photography magazines, including Outdoor Photographer and PC Photo. He photographed more than 600 air-to-air shoots for Plane & Pilot magazine, most of which included P&P covers, and most recently was Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) Editor for P&P and flew/photographed/wrote about more than 50 LSA. In the '90s, he authored four nature photography books, two of which won the Benjamin Franklin Award for Best Nature Book of the Year. Publishers include Sierra Club Books and Graphic Arts Press. He is retired from aviation work, and writing a novel while day trading in the stock market.

Jim was a friend of Steven Spielberg when they both attended Cal State Long Beach in 1965-66. Both were 19-year-olds interested in film.

Son of Major League Baseball player Jim Baxes. His sister, the model Catherine Mae Hawn, was the third wife of Dean Martin, and he had another sister, Brook Baxes. His niece, and Cathy's daughter is Sasha Martin.
