Stellan Skarsgard Says He Accepted a Lower Salary on ‘Sentimental Value’ to Give the Crew Good Lunches: ‘Norway Is the Richest Country, but They Don’t Want to Spend Money on Food’

Stellan Skarsgård accepted a lower salary and became an executive producer on Joachim Trier’s “Sentimental Value” — winner of the Grand Prix at Cannes this year — because he wanted to give the crew good lunches.

“I wasn’t supposed to be [an executive producer] at first, but I said: ‘I’d never film in Norway without having a special contract.’ After ‘Insomnia’ [Erik Skjoldbjærg’s 1997 thriller later remade by Christopher Nolan], I gathered the whole crew and said, ‘I’ll never film in this country again – unless we get a good lunch,’” he said during roundtable interview at Karlovy Vary Film Festival, where he received the Crystal Globe for outstanding artistic contribution to world cinema.

“I lost eight kilos on ‘Insomnia.’ We would usually get a loaf of bread, that’s pre-sliced, and a plastic salami. That’s it!” he says. “I’ve made other films in Norway since then, but it has...

Ed Guiney, co-ceo of Ireland’s Element Pictures, and Anita Juka, founder of Croatia’s 4Film, have been elected to the board of the European Producers Club (Epc).

Meanwhile, Mariela Besuievsky of Spain’s Tornasol Media and Pandora da Cunha Telles of Portugal’s Ukbar Films have both been re-elected to the Epc board.

Each will serve a two-year mandate. Guiney and Juka both replace outgoing board members Reinier Selen of the Netherlands’ Rinkel Film and and Ulrik Bolt Jorgensen of Denmark’s Arena Film.

The board election results were announced during the Epc’s General Assembly in Cannes. Founded...

‘The Worst Person in the World’ Emerges as Simply the Best at Norway’s Amanda Awards
Image
Joachim Trier’s Oscar-nominated smash “The Worst Person in the World,” about a young woman trying to figure out what – and who – she really wants in her life, won big at Norway’s Amanda Awards on Saturday night, scooping five statuettes, including one for best film.

Trier, who now holds the title for most Amanda Awards, also won for best screenplay with his long-time collaborator Eksil Vogt. The film’s breakout star Renate Reinsve, already awarded at Cannes, picked up her first Amanda for her portrayal of Julie, with Anders Danielsen Lie named best supporting actor.

Back in February, Reinsve – who will be next seen in “A Different Man” alongside Sebastian Stan – opened up about her work with Trier, which started in 2011 on “Oslo, August 31st,” her very first feature film.

“I was an extra with one line. I had nothing to compare it to – it was my first movie set.
