Alretha Thomas graduated with a Journalism degree from U.S.C. While an intern at a Los Angeles radio station, she managed to land an interview with Stevie Wonder at a concert. This was before the age of smartphones. Alretha had to call the radio station. Stevie graciously agreed to do the interview in a nearby phone booth. He talked about his role in Dr. Martin Luther King's Birthday becoming a national holiday.

Alretha Thomas is the author of fifteen novels: Daughter Denied, Dancing Her Dreams Away, Married in the Nick of Nine, The Baby in the Window, One Harte, Two Loves, Renee's Return, Four Ladies Only, Missing Melissa, Justice for Jessica, Losing Lauren, A Penny for Her Heart, The Women on Retford Drive, The Truth About Gretchen, The Girl in the Blue Blazer, and The Daughter Between Them.

Alretha is an international traveler. She's visited Nigeria, Senegal, Switzerland, Greece, and London.

Alretha received an award from Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley while in high school. She met the mayor in his office along with her very proud grandparents.

Alretha attracted the attention of the late super star Prince on the dance floor of a West Hollywood nightclub in the early 90s. The icon came to the dance floor and watched Alretha dance for more than ten minutes.

Alretha graduated second (salutatorian) in her high school class.

Alretha lost her mother at the age of fourteen when her mother succumbed to asthma. It was then she moved from Northern California to Southern California to live with her maternal grandparents.

In 1993, Alretha Thomas was nominated for an NAACP Theatre Award for her role as Reecy in David Ault's stage play, Grinning Piece of Lightning. Award-winning actress, Jennifer Lewis was also nominated that year.
