He graduated from the Technical High School of Architecture in 1952. He was admitted at the Theatre and Cinema Art Institute in 1952, in the class of Professor Aura Buzescu, and graduated in 1956. He got his PhD in Radio Theatre with a thesis on the 'Convertibility of acting expression means in the process of creation', and later taught acting art at the same Institute, from 1985 to 2005.

He played in hundreds of plays on the stages of the Bucharest Municipal Theater, the Comedy Theater, and the National Theater in Bucharest. His career also included 70 films, many of them directed by director Sergiu Nicolaescu, and 300 roles in radio theater.

One of the greatest Romanian actors, as well as a university professor, journalist, essayist and poet.

Honorary member of the National Theatre I.L. Caragiale of Bucharest, member of the Senate of UNITER actors' union, of the Union of Professional Journalists of Romania, and of the Romanian Filmmakers Association UCIN.

He received several awards for his acting career, including the National Award for Lifetime Achievement, offered by the Ministry of Culture in 2003. Since 2011, he had a star on Bucharest's Walk of Fame.

Honorary citizen of Bucharest, Romania.

Decorated with the Order of Faithful Service in rank of Commander in 2000 and with the Cultural Merit Order in rank of Grand Officer in 2004.

He held the position of State Secretary in the Ministry of Culture for two years, between December 30, 1992, and April 4, 1994.

Buried on 10th April 2016 with military honors in the cemetery Colentina (Reinvierea) in Bucharest, Romania.
