A policeman's son, he absconded from home at eighteen to find work as an actor with the Imperial Film Company. He later turned to writing and began to direct socially conscious films from the mid-1930's. During the 1950's, he made more popular commercial entertainments, including India's first Technicolor feature Il principe Yanez (1952).

Adopted father of actor Sajid Khan.

Son Iqbal Khan is married to Dilip Kumar sister Saeeda.

Grandfather of producer Saqib Khan and writer Ilaham. ( Iqbal Khan's children).

Grandchildren are Afzul Khan ,Sattar Khan, Abdul Hafiz Khan,Aslam Khan. They are the son's of Ayub Khan (not the actor) from his first marriage to Rahat. Rahat would later get married to Sultan Ahmed ( Saira Banu's brother). From this marriage Rahat and Sultan had a daughter named Shaheen. She would later star in Maha Sangram and marry Sumeet Saigal. Shaheen is also the mother of actress Sayesha Saigal.
