50 Most Underrated Movies of the Last Decade
Image
Sure, big-budget blockbusters do steal the spotlight, but nothing can beat the real cinematic gold that often slips quietly under the underrated movies list. Over the past decade, while franchises soared, a wave of underrated gems emerged quietly and made their mark, without fanfare, red-carpet buzz, or viral memes. Yep, we’re talking about the films that didn’t break box office records but definitely broke our hearts, bent genres, and left cinephiles like us whispering, ‘How did more people not see this?’

From sleeper thrillers to indie darlings, deadpan comedies to moody dramas, there’s a long list of some of the best storytelling that absolutely went unnoticed. Perhaps they had poor marketing, or maybe they released their product next to a Marvel monster. Or maybe they were just too weird, wild, or wonderful for the mainstream crowd. But whatever the reason may be, they undoubtedly deserved better, and...

Pilot TV Podcast: The Better Sister, Stick, And The Gold. With Guest Matthew Goode
Image
This week's episode of the Pilot TV Podcast isn't just good, folks — it's Matthew Goode! Yes, the star of Netflix's latest streaming hit, crime drama Dept. Q, joins us on the show this week to talk murder, creative collaboration, the scent of death, and, er, golf with our very own Jordan King. [41:02 — 57:30 approx.] Speaking of golf, over in the reviews section we're hitting the links with Owen Wilson in Stick on Apple TV+, as well as exploring the boundaries of sibling rivalry with Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks in The Better Sister on Prime, and hunting for missing bullion with Hugh Bonneville in The Gold Season 2 on BBC1.

Elsewhere, James Dyer, Boyd Hilton, and Kay Ribeiro dig into a listener's question on pointless TV shows, dive into this week's telly news — from Hacks' renewal to the latest Harry Potter casting — and, as a special treat for the maths geeks among you,...

‘The Better Sister’ Bosses Break Down the Series’ Spiderweb of Secrets, Complex Family Dynamics and Mysteries They Can Explore in a Season 2
Image
[This story contains spoilers from all eight episodes of Prime Video’s The Better Sister.]

When crafting Prime Video’s eight-episode limited series The Better Sister, starring Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks, showrunners Olivia Milch and Regina Corrado asked themselves, “What is the most uncomfortable path we can take and can we bear telling it this way?”

That path proves to be a spiderweb of mysteries as Milch and Corrado explore both the unraveling of a whodunit and the trauma and history between two estranged sisters Nicky (Banks) and Chloe (Biel). Adapted from Alafair Burke’s novel of the same name, Biel and Banks star as sisters seemingly living opposite lives — Chloe with an established career and devoted family that includes lawyer husband Adam (Corey Stoll) and teenage son Ethan (Maxwell Acee Donovan), while Nicky struggles to stay clean. However, when Adam is murdered, the two sisters must come together, especially when Ethan is accused of the murder. To make matters more complicated,...

‘Dept. Q,’ ‘Mountainhead,’ Alfred Hitchcock on Netflix, and the best to stream this weekend
Image
Welcome to the Gold Ticket, your VIP guide to the best of pop culture for the weekend ahead, curated by the Gold Derby team of experts. (May 30-June 1)

The main stream

From a genre perspective, Scott Frank's latest project for Netflix has little in common with his previous two shows for the streaming service, the Emmy-winning limited series The Queen’s Gambit and Godless. But like them, Dept. Q is must-see TV.

Adapted from the best-selling Department Q crime novels by Danish author Jussi Adler-Olsen, the nine-episode series (now streaming) stars Matthew Goode as Dci Carl Morck, an acerbic detective returning to work months after a routine welfare check leaves a young cop dead, his best friend and partner paralyzed from the waist down, and him with a bullet wound to the neck and mandated therapy. When his embattled Edinburgh police station needs a PR win, Morck is assigned to...

Elizabeth Banks And Jessica Biel's Crime Thriller Miniseries Is An Instant Prime Video Hit
Image
Messy family drama can make for very entertaining storytelling, especially if there's any kind of crime involved. In the new Prime Video limited series "The Better Sister," based on the novel of the same name by Alafair Burke, family secrets become very public fodder when lawyer, father, and husband Adam Macintosh (Corey Stoll) is brutally murdered. Now his wife Chloe (Jessica Biel), the editor-in-chief of a fictional magazine, is left to pick up the pieces and potentially try to clear her own name. There's just one problem: her husband Adam is also her estranged sister Nicky's (Elizabeth Banks) ex-husband, and she's been raising Nicky and Adam's son Ethan (Maxwell Acee Donovan) almost as if he were her own. Ugly family secrets being revealed could derail what's left of Chloe's perfect little life, and now she will have to fight for it all.

The series was created by Craig Gillespie, who...

The Better Sister Review – A Series Undone by Tonal Whiplash
Image
Sometimes, you have to wonder about the universe’s sense of timing.

Take, for instance, the launch of The Better Sister, the new Prime Video limited series where Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks play a pair of financially and socially disparate sisters in crisis. The series comes a week after the launch of Sirens, another limited series on Netflix about a pair of financially and socially disparate sisters in crisis, played by Meghann Fahy and Milly Alcock.

While likely a quirk of advantageous late-spring programming, comparisons between the two series are inevitable, especially concerning how they handle their respective sisterly relationships. This coincidence may even suggest a trend, as Hollywood grapples with what stories resonate in the evolving post-streaming era.

She confronts him about abusing Chloe and refuses to leave, which turns the situation violent.

Adam grabs Nicky and tries to pull her out of the house. The fight continues until Nicky pulls out a pocketknife and stabs Adam multiple times in self defense. When he collapses, she retrieves the knife from his hand and rushes out in a panic. Prior to killing Adam, Nicky...

After Chloe bravely shared her truth on the stand in episode 6, The Better Sister episode 7 begins with a flashback featuring a graphic depiction of Adam's physical abuse. Ethan watches from the balcony of the apartment as his father shoves his mother against the wall and firmly presses on her chest. He watches Chloe remove herself from his grasp and exclaim that if he touches her again, she'll kill him. That's why Ethan thought she killed him.

In real time, she assures Ethan that she didn't kill his dad. They still have to answer that question. Even with it hanging in the air, Chloe and Nicky are getting along and giving Ethan a loving home. They reminisce about their childhood, Shadow/Wallace Lake, and other fond memories. Before heading into the city,...

The Better Sister (TV Series 2025) Recap & Ending Explained: Who is Behind Adam’s Murder?
Image
“The Better Sister” (TV Series 2025) is yet another iteration of now-stale templates revolving around watching rich people go through tragedy, hell, tackle grief, and recover their footing. Throw in a sprinkling of trauma, unresolved past issues, threat of intimate partner violence, a son seeming to repeat addiction patterns, and behold a new show with the same old, tired trappings. There’s barely any fresh, seductive storytelling, so your eyes will quickly glaze over as the murder mystery deepens into a tale of two estranged sisters finding their way back to each other, reconnecting after several years, misunderstandings, and escalated anxieties over sharing a son.

The show makes a great fuss about attempting to empathise with strained ties, psychological disarray, and scan where healing can be possible. But little lands, most of it buried between predictability and repetition. It lacks characters who can be adequately viper-like and charismatic enough to warrant attention.

Jessica Biel's New Prime Video Thriller Adaptation Continues An Optimistic 8-Year Rotten Tomatoes TV Streak
Image
Jessica Biel's new Prime Video thriller series continues a rather exciting TV streak that started back in 2017. Biel first climbed into fame in 1996 when she played Mary Camden in the family drama 7th Heaven, but in the years that followed, she focused predominantly on a movie career. Some of her notable projects include The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003), Blade: Trinity (2004), The Illusionist (2006), The A-Team (2010), Hitchcock (2012), and more. Biel didn't dive back into a regular TV role until 2017's The Sinner, a project that performed exceptionally well and earned the actor Golden Globe and Emmy nominations.

The Sinner holds an impressive 92% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, and though Biel stepped off the screen after season 1 to focus wholly on her executive producer role, the series has continued to perform well. In the eight years since, Biel has taken up other TV roles, including Linetown (2019), and Candy (2022 to present). These series performed exceptionally well with critics,...

Prime Video Thriller 'The Better Sister' Astounds Rotten Tomatoes Critics
Image
There's no denying that Prime Video does thrillers really well, and their newest original offering, The Better Sister, seems to be continuing its string of hits. Debuting today, May 29, the series is impressing critics on Rotten Tomatoes, who have given it a 90% score right out of the gate.

Based on the 2019 novel by Alafair Burke, Martin Carr from Cbr says the new thriller "shakes up expectations," while critic Jeanine T. Abraham notes that of all the "series about rich people vacationing at their summer homes by the beach," The Better Sister is "the best of the bunch."

Starring Jessical Biel and Elizabeth Banks, the new thriller is filled with twists, misdirections, and all the sibling drama you'd expect. However, this one does seem like a cut above the rest based on the synopsis, which makes us want to see it even without reading any of the reviews:

"Chloe (Biel), a high-profile media executive,...

Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks’ Prime Video Thriller ‘The Better Sister’ Quickly Loses the Plot: TV Review
Image
There have been several TV series recently centering on the intricacies of sisterhood. From Netflix’s “Sirens” to Peacock’s “Long Bright River,” this particular sibling connection is having a moment. Now, Prime Video’s limited thriller, “The Better Sister,” based on the best-selling novel by Alafair Burke and adapted to television by Olivia Milch and Regina Corrado, is showcasing two very different and estranged sisters, torn apart by lies and forced to come together again after a shocking crime rocks their worlds. Despite its electric premise, which includes murder, secrets, affairs and a high-profile trial, the show is underwhelming.

“The Better Sister” opens at dusk. Chloe Taylor (Jessica Biel), an editor-in-chief at a popular magazine, is seen leaving her mentor Catherine Lancaster’s (Lorraine Toussaint) Hamptons estate. After a short drive to her own home, Chloe enters and fiddles around a bit in the kitchen before stepping into the living room.

The Better Sister Season 1 Review: Not Quite a Killer Thriller
Image
In the ever-expanding televisual landscape, where narratives of domestic discord often curtsy to the macabre, The Better Sister Season 1 presents its opening gambit. We meet Chloe Taylor (Jessica Biel), a woman seemingly sculpted from the very marble of modern aspiration – a high-powered publishing executive, her life an enviable edifice of success, her hair a marvel of geometric precision that likely requires its own T-square. This meticulously constructed reality, however, proves as fragile as a champagne flute in a mosh pit.

The series wastes little time in applying a sledgehammer to this polished veneer: Chloe stumbles upon her husband, Adam (Corey Stoll), dispatched with a notable lack of subtlety in their presumably tasteful home. This violent act immediately sends tremors through the family unit, not least towards her teenage stepson, Ethan, whose adolescent angst now acquires a far sharper, more sinister edge.

And just as the crime scene tape goes up,...

‘The Better Sister’ Review: A Charmingly Silly Murder Mystery Adaptation
Image
Not every book needs a multi-episode television adaptation. And based on how most of those adaptations turn out, most do not. As adapted from Alafair Burke’s 2019 novel of the same name, however, Amazon’s The Better Sister features characters trapped in a familial web so tangled that it all but justifies its existence.

High-powered publishing exec Chloe Taylor (Jessica Biel) is married to lawyer Adam (Corey Stoll), who used to be married to Chloe’s alcoholic sister, Nicky (Elizabeth Banks). Adam and Nicky’s teenage son, Ethan (Maxwell Acee Donovan), has been raised for most of his life in a world of wealth and privilege by Chloe, who moved to New York with Adam and Ethan when Nicky’s addiction took a particularly dangerous turn. Chloe has managed to keep her salacious past from the general public, but when Adam is murdered, her personal affairs are thrust into the spotlight—and Nicky comes calling,...

The Better Sister Review: Jessica Biel & Elizabeth Banks mix sibling rivalry with murder in an engaging yet distracting whodunit
Image
Plot: Chloe (Jessica Biel) navigates life with husband Adam (Corey Stoll) and son Ethan (Maxwell Acee Donovan) while her sister Nicky (Elizabeth Banks) battles addiction. Adam’s murder unveils long-hidden family secrets, shaking their world.

Review: Sibling rivalry is a concept as old as time. In extreme cases, duos like Cain and Abel, the Boleyn sisters, and Liam and Noah Gallagher of Oasis come to mind. People say blood runs thicker than water, but it’s difficult to see the forest for the trees when the floodgates burst. In rare cases, a heartfelt chat over a glass of wine or beer can resolve most issues. However, when a decades-long rift is made deeper by murder, there isn’t enough Cabernet Sauvignon or IPAs to repair the widening damage.

In The Better Sister, created by Olivia Milch and Regina Corrado, based on the novel by Alafair Burke, Chloe (Jessica Biel) and...

‘The Better Sister’: Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks on their ‘fun partnership’ and the ‘satisfying’ killer reveal
Image
Jessica Biel tells Gold Derby she couldn't have been more "excited" to find out who would be playing her sister on Prime Video's The Better Sister. "Me, too!" echoes Elizabeth Banks. In addition to playing estranged siblings Chloe (Biel) and Nicky (Banks), who are forced to come together after someone they know is murdered, the actresses both serve as executive producers under showrunner Regina Corrado. The murder-mystery limited series is based on the 2019 novel by Alafair Burke.

"These are hard characters," Biel tells us (watch the full interview above). "These are challenging roles. You want to know that you have a partner who you can trust and who you know is going to bring it every day.

"And I believed that we were sisters," Banks chuckles. "I believed it was possible, and that I was the big sister, which I am in real life. It just felt very correct. You...

‘The Better Sister’ Review: Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks Thrive in Tantalizing Prime Video Mystery
Image
Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks couldn’t be better matched as sisters who’ve landed on the opposite ends of easy street. It’s entertaining to watch the women act opposite each other, biting into their succulent roles as siblings in a long-simmering feud. In Prime Video’s “The Better Sister,” airing on May 29th, this pair harbors so many shared secrets they would need a storage unit to contain them.

Over eight twisty, turbulent episodes, past one shocking reveal and over another cliffhanger, the audience is invited to guess if one sister is superior to the other. The most successful is Chloe (Biel). The chilly Anna Wintour-ish married magazine editor glides through a glamorous life with a Manhattan penthouse and prime Easthampton real estate. In contrast, Nicky (Banks), the funky eldest and underdog, struggles back in their native Cleveland. The hot mess alcoholic stumbles one day at a...

The Community Character You Probably Forgot Jack Black Played
Image
The first half of "Community" season 1 was all about the show finding its balance. It constantly tested different character dynamics to see what worked best before eventually striking gold with Troy (Donald Glover) and Abed (Danny Pudi). By the time the first "Community" Halloween episode came along, it seemed like the show had fully hit its groove. The study group was now a perfectly tight-knit, codependent body with a comfortable repertoire the series' writers could always rely on. Maybe that's why, when season 1 returned from winter break with "Investigative Journalism," the writers decided to throw a massive wrench into the study group's dynamics and see what happened. That wrench was, of course, Jack Black.

Black's character was named Buddy (no last name given), and his main thing was that he was annoying. He spent the episode trying and failing to become a part of the group, incapable of picking up...

Image
The Better Sister tells two stories about two different sets of siblings, one fictional, one real. "That Was a Rough One for Me": Amanda Peet Breaks Down Her Experience on 'Seinfeld'
Image
Amanda Peethas been in some of your favorite movies and television shows. Her most recent show, Your Friends & Neighbors, is a hit on Apple TV+. But she also played a small role in the hit '90s show Seinfeld. According to Peet though, it wasn't her most pleasant experience. Peet joined Elizabeth Banks on Watch What Happens Live and played a game with host Andy Cohen that got them to open up about their IMDb profiles. Which led to Cohen bringing up Seinfeld.

"You played a waitress that went out with Jerry,” Cohen said about the episode that Peet was in. He then asked, “How did the episode turn out?” According to Peet, she said that it wasn't a great experience getting to work with comedy legends like Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. But to be fair to the cast, Peet shared that it was her own...

The 10 Best Sports Movies Based On True Stories
Image
There's nothing like a good sports movie. Even at their worst, you can expect a rousing, feel-good romp or a fascinating deep dive into the mind of an athletically gifted individual. Hollywood has no shortage of stories in which a last-second shot or touchdown determines a character's fate, and audiences turn up in droves to see heroes like Rocky Balboa or Daniel Larusso overcome their demons and vanquish their opponents to achieve eternal fame and glory.

Still, fact often triumphs over fiction. The only thing better than watching Roy Hobbs (Robert Redford) hit the game-winning home run in "The Natural" is seeing Scott Hatteberg (Chris Pratt) do the same in "Moneyball" -- and knowing it actually happened. True-life tales hit harder because they don't rely on fictional elements to deliver crowd-pleasing thrills. One could argue these stories are more powerful because they prove that magic is more than Hollywood hocus-pocus.

Jessica Biel vs. Elizabeth Banks: Who Ruled the Red Carpet at The Better Sister Premiere?
Image
At the May 20, 2025, premiere of The Better Sister in New York City, Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks wore strikingly different fashion moods, but both brought serious star power.

With her 5ft 6¾ in (169.5 cm) frame elevated further by heels and fluid tailoring, Biel subtly towered over her 5ft 4½ in (163.8 cm) co-star.

Jessica Biel paired her ab-baring Michael Kors suit with pointed black heels, while Elizabeth Banks added sleek stilettos to her sculptural Rosie Assoulin gown lined with multicolored stripes (Credit: Roger Wong / INSTARimages)

Biel turned heads in a daring all-black Michael Kors Collection look that blurred the line between suiting and lingerie. She layered a dramatic longline blazer over billowy, wide-leg trousers that skimmed her pointy black heels, exposing her black triangle bra for a fashion-forward, ab-baring moment.

Beside her, Banks brightened up the carpet in a sculptural black Rosie Assoulin Resort 2024 gown with an asymmetric neckline and thigh-high slit that...

Original Hunger Games Star Found The Casting For One Returning Character Is "Perfect" For New Haymitch Prequel Movie
Image
Original Hunger Games star Elizabeth Banks expresses enthusiasm for the casting of a returning character in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.
