  • His profession as seller of movie projectors led him to different distant countries and during World War I he was present as a cinematographer at different theaters of war.
  • The son of a bank director, he began his career as a salesman of film projectors in 1911. He was trained as a camera operator at Gaumont in 1912 and, thereafter, worked steadily as a newsreel cameraman until the end of World War I. He became a full director of photography in 1918, remaining in German films until 1928 (including several pictures under the direction of Ernst Lubitsch). Sparkuhl had a spell at BIP in London (1928-30) and then moved to Hollywood, via France. His most polished work under contract to Paramount was on the French Legion drama Beau Geste (1939).
  • He turned his interest to the cinema and he began to work as a cinematographer for movies from 1916.
  • The cinematographer Theodor Sparkuhl began his professional career as a seller of movie projectors and afterwards he went go Gaumont in Berlin in 1912 in order to join an education as a cinematographer for newsreels.
  • In the USA he asserted himself soon and he was engaged for numerous movies in the next years.
