Father of Alan Hale Jr., who became known as Alan Hale after his father's death.

He was posthumously awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6532 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, California, on February 8, 1960.

Ida Lupino, who played Hale's wife in Strada maestra (1940), would go on to direct his son Alan Hale Jr. in four episodes of Hale's series L'isola di Gilligan (1964) 25 years later.

Originally trained to be an opera singer.

Following his death, he was interred at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California, Whispering Pines section.

His final three films -- Corona di stelle (1950), Colt .45 (1950) and Viva Robin Hood! (1950) -- were all released within a few months after his death in January 1950.

Had appeared in two films--ten years apart--with the word "Destination" in their titles and with the Pacific Ocean as their settings: Destination Unknown (1933) and Destinazione Tokyo (1943).
